BACKGROUND: Moraxella catarrhalis (M. catarrhalis) is an important opportunistic pathogen causing respiratory tract infections, and current detection methods are limited by low sensitivity, heavy instrument dependence or complex operation, which cannot meet the needs of rapid clinical and on-site testing.
METHODS: The copB gene is a species-specific conserved gene of M. catarrhalis, which was selected as the target for specific detection. Primers and probe were designed using Primer Premier 5.0 software and online tools. The limit of detection was determined using standard strains, and the cl

Conserved Moraxella catarrhalis (Mcat) proteins, oligopeptide permease (Opp)A, hemagglutinin (Hag), outer membrane protein (OMP) CD, Pilin A clade 2 (PilA2), and Moraxella surface protein (Msp) 22 have been studied as vaccine candidates. Children who experience frequent acute otitis media (AOM) confirmed with pathogen identification by tympanocentesis are referred to as stringently-defined otitis prone (sOP). Synchrony of serum antibody responses against 5 Mcat proteins, OppA, Hag, OMP CD, PilA2, and Msp22 resulting from nasopharyngeal colonization and AOM was studied for 85 non-otitis prone (

During the surveillance conducted in 2012 by the Drug-resistant Pathogen Surveillance Group in Pediatric Infectious Disease, we isolated a strain of Moraxella catarrhalis that demonstrated resistance to both macrolides and quinolones from a male pediatric patient aged 1.5 years who had developed acute bronchitis. Then we evaluated the susceptibility of this strain to different types of antibacterial agents and conducted a genetic analysis. The results of the susceptibility evaluation showed that the MIC values of azithromycin, clarithromycin, and rokitamycin were >64 μg/mL, >64 μg/mL, and 4 μg

Moraxella catarrhalis has been recognized as an important cause of upper respiratory tract and middle ear infections in children, as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic bronchitis in adults. We aim to study the clonal structure, antimicrobial resistance, and serotypes of M. catarrhalis strains recovered from patients of different ages. Nasopharyngeal swabs, middle ear fluid, and sputum samples were collected. In vitro susceptibility testing was performed according to EUCAST criteria. The monoclonal Ab hybridoma technique was used for serotyping. All strains were subjected

Moraxella catarrhalis (MC) is an aerobic Gram-negative cocci known to cause respiratory tract infections in humans as an opportunistic pathogen, with infections in other body parts being rare. This case involves an elderly female patient with a medical history of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and osteoporosis. Following coronary angiography and lumbar spine surgery prompted by lower back and left lower limb pain, the patient developed persistent pus discharge from the lumbar spine wound post-surgery, which did not respond to conventional anti-infection therapy, leading

The gram-negative bacterium Moraxella catarrhalis infects humans exclusively, causing various respiratory tract diseases, including acute otitis media in children, septicaemia or meningitis in adults, and pneumonia in the elderly. To do so, M. catarrhalis expresses virulence factors facilitating its entry and survival in the host. Among them are the ubiquitous surface proteins (Usps): A1, A2, and A2H, which all belong to the trimeric autotransporter adhesin family. They bind extracellular matrix molecules and inhibit the classical and alternative pathways of the complement cascade by recruitin

There is no licensed vaccine available against Moraxella catarrhalis, an exclusive human pathogen responsible for otitis media in children and respiratory infections in adults. We previously developed conjugate vaccine candidates based on lipooligosaccharides (LOSs) of M. catarrhalis serotypes A, B, and C, each of which was shown to cover a portion of the clinical strains. To generate conserved LOS antigens and eliminate a potential autoimmune response to a similar epitope between M. catarrhalis LOS moiety Galα1-4Galβ1-4Glc and human P(k) antigen, two LOS mutants from strain O35E were construc

Moraxella catarrhalis (M. catarrhalis) is a Gram-negative bacterium that can cause serious respiratory tract infections and middle ear infections in children and adults. M. catarrhalis has demonstrated an increasing rate of antibiotic resistance in the last few years, thus development of an effective vaccine is a major health priority. We report here a novel designed multitope vaccine based on the mapped epitopes of the vaccine candidates filtered out of the whole proteome of M. catarrhalis. After analysis of 1615 proteins using a reverse vaccinology approach, only two proteins (outer membrane

BACKGROUND: Tigecycline, eravacycline, and omadacycline are recently developed tetracyclines. Susceptibility of microbes to these tetracyclines and their molecular mechanisms have not been well elucidated. We investigated the susceptibility of Moraxella catarrhalis to tigecycline, eravacycline, and omadacycline and its resistance mechanisms against these tetracyclines.
METHODS: A total of 207 non-duplicate M. catarrhalis isolates were collected from different inpatients. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the tetracyclines were determined by broth microdilution. Tigecycline-, era

Moraxella catarrhalis is a human respiratory tract pathogen that causes otitis media in children and lower respiratory tract infections in adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We have identified and characterized a zinc uptake ABC transporter that is present in all strains of M. catarrhalis tested. A mutant in which the znu gene cluster is knocked out shows markedly impaired growth compared to the wild type in medium that contains trace zinc; growth is restored to wild-type levels by supplementing medium with zinc but not with other divalent cations. Thermal-shift assays showed t

BACKGROUND: Moraxella catarrhalis, once considered a component of the normal human flora of the upper respiratory tract, is now recognized as a true pathogen and, rarely, a cause of infective endocarditis (IE).
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a rare case of a 36-year-old woman who presented with respiratory symptoms and was initially misdiagnosed with pneumonia and M. catarrhalis bacteremia. No vegetations were seen on transesophageal echocardiogram (TOE) imaging. However, further investigation with cardiac computed tomography (CT) revealed prosthetic pulmonary valve IE caused by M. catarrhali

Moraxella catarrhalis is a human-adapted, opportunistic bacterial pathogen of the respiratory mucosa. Although asymptomatic colonization of the nasopharynx is common, M. catarrhalis can ascend into the middle ear, where it is a prevalent causative agent of otitis media in children, or enter the lower respiratory tract, where it is associated with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in adults. Phase variation is the high frequency, random, reversible switching of gene expression that allows bacteria to adapt to different host microenvironments and evade host defences, a

Moraxella catarrhalis is a mucosal pathogen that causes childhood otitis media and exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in adults. During the course of infection, M. catarrhalis needs to adhere to epithelial cells of different host niches such as the nasopharynx and lungs, and consequently, efficient adhesion to epithelial cells is considered an important virulence trait of M. catarrhalis. By using Tn-seq, a genome-wide negative selection screenings technology, we identified 15 genes potentially required for adherence of M. catarrhalis BBH18 to pharyngeal epithelial Detroit 5

Moraxella catarrhalis is an increasingly important pathogen, recognized as a common cause of respiratory tract infections. It is particularly known for its role in causing otitis media in children and exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adults. With growing interest in developing vaccines against M. catarrhalis, a deeper understanding of epidemiology in both carriage and disease is crucial. Here, we present an all-age, community-based, upper respiratory tract carriage study (the Solent SMART Study) designed to investigate the epidemiology of, and risk factors for,

OBJECTIVE: Moraxella catarrhalis is a non-motile Gram-negative diplococcus bacterium that contributed to several human infections including conjunctivitis. This study aimed to reveal the prevalence of M. catarrhalis in patients who suffered from conjunctivitis in Ahvaz city, southwest of Iran.
RESULTS: Out of 100 conjunctiva swab specimens, M. catarrhalis was isolated only from one (1%) conjunctivitis cases using the culture method. This strain was isolated from a 34 years old female patient. Also, the results of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were in agreement with the culture method, a

The bacterial speciesMoraxella catarrhalishas been hypothesized as being composed of two distinct lineages (referred to as the seroresistant [SR] and serosensitive [SS]) with separate evolutionary histories based on several molecular typing methods, whereas 16S ribotyping has suggested an additional split within the SS lineage. Previously, we characterized whole-genome sequences of 12 SR-lineage isolates, which revealed a relatively small supragenome when compared with other opportunistic nasopharyngeal pathogens, suggestive of a relatively short evolutionary history. Here, we performed whole-

Colonization of the human nasopharynx by Moraxella catarrhalis is presumed to involve attachment of this bacterium to the mucosa. DNA microarray analysis was used to determine whether attachment of M. catarrhalis to human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells in vitro affected gene expression in this bacterium. Attachment affected expression of at least 454 different genes, with 163 being upregulated and 291 being downregulated. Among the upregulated genes was one (ORF113) previously annotated as encoding a protein with some similarity to outer membrane protein A (OmpA). The protein encoded by ORF1

OBJECTIVE: We report a rare case of recurrent frontal osteoma complicated by mucopyocele and intracranial abscess. Furthermore, we report an unusual organism, Moraxella catarrhalis, as the infectious agent. Finally, we demonstrate that endovascular embolization may be part of the treatment paradigm of frontal osteomas in selected cases.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 71-year-old man with a previous history of craniotomy presented to the emergency room with 24 hours of headache episodes, confusion, lethargy, and spells of low-grade fever. Imaging and angiography revealed a complex frontal lesion involvin

Moraxella catarrhalis isolates (n = 413) were collected from 20 clinical laboratories in England and Scotland in 1991 and were examined for beta-lactamase production by isoelectric focusing. beta-Lactamases were found in 375 isolates of which, 349 (93.1%) had BRO-1 enzyme and 26 (6.9%) had BRO-2. Minor variation in electrofocusing pattern occurred within both enzyme types. Ampicillin MICs for BRO-1 producers were 25-fold higher than for non-producers, but those for BRO-2 producers were raised only four-fold. MICs of cefaclor, cefixime, loracarbef, co-amoxiclav and cefetamet generally were two-

We compared the distribution of organisms in the nasopharynx and the middle ear fluid in 164 episodes of acute otitis media in children 6-35 months of age. In contrast to Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae , Moraxella catarrhalis is isolated from the middle ear in only 11% of episodes with nasopharyngeal colonization with this organism.
