Brodie's abscess is a subacute form of osteomyelitis which generally occurs in the metaphysis of the femur and tibia in the pediatric population. Pathogens are most commonly Gram-positive bacteria, notably Staphylococcus and Streptococcus. In this article, we describe a young pediatric patient presenting with subacute ankle pain with a subsequent diagnosis of Brodie's abscess of the talus secondary to Morganella morganii. We review the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of this unique patient. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Morganella morganii as a cause of Brodie's abscess.

To infect a susceptible host, the gastrointestinal pathogen Yersinia enterocolitica must survive passage through the acid environment of the stomach. In this study, we showed that Y. enterocolitica serotype O8 survives buffered acidic conditions as low as pH 1.5 for long periods of time provided urea is available. Acid tolerance required an unusual cytoplasmically located urease that was activated 780-fold by low-pH conditions. Acid tolerance of Helicobacter species has also been attributed to urease activity, but in that case urease was not specifically activated by low-pH conditions. A ure m

INTRODUCTION: Morganella morganii (M. morganii) is a Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen, whose increasing virulence and antibiotic resistance negatively impact dairy cow health and productivity, raising concerns in livestock health management. To mitigate this risk, rapid and reliable diagnostic methods for detection are essential. Currently, detection methods for M. morganii are underdeveloped, prompting us to develop both pathogenic and serological detection methods, including an optimized PCR technique and an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (I-ELISA).
METHODS: The optimized PC

A 5 yr old, 184 kg, and 262 cm total length female bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus was found dead in a display after bloody discharge from the blowhole was observed 3 h prior to death. Pathological examination revealed fibrinous bronchopneumonia with prominent areas of necrosis (sequestra) and numerous Gram-negative bacilli within alveoli and in blood vessels of the lungs and liver and between muscle fibers. The cause of death was attributed to septicemia. Often, cases of fibrinous bronchopneumonia are characterized by bacteremia in the latter stages of infection, resulting in the death

Morganella morganii produces an inducible, chromosomally encoded AmpC beta-lactamase. We describe in this study three new variants of AmpC within this species with apparent pIs of 6.6 (M19 from M. morganii strain PP19), 7.4 (M29 from M. morganii strain PP29), and 7.8 (M37 from M. morganii strain PP37). After gene sequencing, deduced amino acid sequences displayed one to six substitutions when compared to the available Morganella AmpC sequences. An AmpR-encoding gene was also found upstream of ampC, including the LysR regulators' helix-turn-helix DNA-binding domain and the putative T-N11-A-prot

Morganella morganii is an opportunistic pathogen that infects a variety of tissues. The increasing resistance of M. morganii to fluoroquinolones is a global public health concern. Hence, in this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to determine the prevalence of fluoroquinolone resistance in M. morganii clinical isolates. We conducted a comprehensive search of the PubMed, Embase, ScienceDirect, and Scopus databases up to July 10, 2024, to identify studies on fluoroquinolone resistance in M. morganii. Studies that encompassed clinical isolates with fluoroquinolone susceptibility data w

BACKGROUND: M. morganii is a species of the genus Morganella in the family Enterobacteriaceae. This species primarily causes infections of postoperative wounds and the urinary tract. Some isolates of M. morganii exhibit resistance to multiple antibiotics due to multidrug resistance traits, complicating clinical treatment; thus, there is a growing need to elucidate the resistance mechanisms of this pathogen.
METHODS: A total of 658 bacterial strains were isolated from anal fecal swabs from poultry and livestock and from the surrounding environment in Wenzhou, China, via plate streaking. The fu

Morganella morganii exemplifies a typical case of an open pangenome, where genes move intra- and interspecies via horizontal gene transfer. Through pangenome analysis, the study maps three agriculture isolates; M. morganii with strong plant growth promoting (PGP) activity, along with 78 publicly available genomes from clinical, food, wastewater, and animal sources. The analysis showed 20,860 gene clusters with only 9.99% core genes and a discriminating distribution of 75.20% cloud genes across different niches. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis showed 33, 36, and 38 genes

INTRODUCTION: Morganella morganii is an uncommon cause of urinary tract infection, typically associated with catheterization or underlying diseases.
CASE PRESENTATION: I report a rare case of severe hemorrhagic cystitis with massive intravesical clot retention in a 90-year-old woman without recent catheterization or diabetes mellitus. Ultrasonography revealed a large intravesical hematoma requiring clot evacuation. Urine culture yielded M. morganii as the sole organism. The patient improved following antimicrobial therapy and supportive management.
CONCLUSION: This case suggests that M. morg

BACKGROUND: Morganella morganii is an emerging nosocomial opportunistic pathogen with increasing multidrug resistance. Antibiotic resistance, driven primarily by the horizontal transfer of resistance genes, has become a global health crisis. Integrons, mobile genetic elements, are now understood to facilitate the transfer of these genes, contributing to the rapid proliferation of resistant strains. Understanding the regulatory role of integrons in drug resistance gene expression is crucial for developing novel strategies to combat this pressing public health issue.

BACKGROUND: M. morganii is a bacterium frequently associated with urinary infections in humans. While many human strains are sequenced, only the genomes of few poultry strains are available. Here, we performed a detailed characterization of five highly resistant Morganella morganii strains isolated in association with Escherichia coli from diseased domestic Austrian poultry flocks, namely geese, turkeys and chicken layers. Additionally, we sequenced the genomes of these strains by NGS and analyzed phylogenetic clustering, resistance and virulence genes in the context of host-specificity.

Morganella morganii is an opportunistic pathogen affecting immunocompromised and hospitalized intensive care patients. It colonizes diverse environments and exhibits multidrug resistance. Its genome encodes factors that impart pathogenicity and resistance to multiple antibiotics. This study provided insights into the resistome, mobilome, and toxin-antitoxin systems of M. morganii strains from human clinical samples, food, animals, and wastewater. The pangenome predicted 2,852 core genes shared by >99% of the strains, with >30% of coding sequences annotated as hypothetical proteins co-localizin

The bacteria's ability to respond to environmental changes is critical for their survival. This allows them to form intricate communities, withstand stress, and initiate virulence responses in hosts during infection, a phenomenon known as phenotypic switching. In this study, we investigated the role of shaking conditions on phenotype switch in multidrug-resistant and pathogenic Morganella morganii both under in vitro and in vivo conditions. The results demonstrate that M. morganii grown in non-shaking conditions, possibly causing low fluid shear, developed floccules or cellular aggregates, and

INTRODUCTION: The members of the tribe Proteeae, Morganella and Providencia are being increasingly recognized as important pathogens. The spectrum of disease caused by them is wide and in reported cases, the mortality is high. Previously both of these pathogens were considered to be rare pathogens as the potential to cause nosocomial transmission and infection was not much studied. But their phenomenal evolution and increase in multidrug-resistance (MDR) strains of these pathogens are posing a major threat toward public health throughout the world.
METHODS: This present study was carried out
