Relationship between premature ventricular complexes and stroke mortality in the general population.

OBJECTIVES: Predictors for increased stroke mortality identify those who may need closer monitoring and better hospital care. While the link between premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) and incident ischemic stroke has been reported, studies on the association with fatal stroke are non-existent. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined the association of PVCs with stroke mortality in 8047 participants (56.5 ± 0.39 years, 53% women, 80.9% Non-Hispanic Whites) without prior history of stroke from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. National Death Index was used to identify t

Effect of substance use on premature mortality among severely hypertensive African Americans.

Low-income African Americans residing in impoverished neighborhoods confront myriad barriers to adhering to antihypertensive regimens. Substance use may thwart medication adherence and lifestyle modification efforts, which has implications for excess cardiovascular disease mortality. The Inner-City Hypertension and Body Organ Damage (ICHABOD) Study was a longitudinal cohort study that evaluated causes of mortality among African Americans who lived in urban areas, had severe, poorly controlled hypertension, and were admitted to a local hospital between 1999-2001 and 2002-2004. The authors emplo

Social Vulnerability and Premature Cardiovascular Mortality Among US Counties, 2014 to 2018.

BACKGROUND: Substantial differences exist between United States counties with regards to premature (<65 years of age) cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. Whether underlying social vulnerabilities of counties influence premature CVD mortality is uncertain. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study (2014-2018), we linked county-level CDC/ATSDR SVI (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Social Vulnerability Index) data with county-level CDC WONDER (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiological Resear

Consumption-based PM2.5-related premature mortality in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region, which has a resource-dependent economy dominated by clusters of heavy industries, has long borne the highest PM2.5 pollution levels in China, prompting serious concerns about the region's disease burden. Pollution-intensive industries in the BTH region not only meet local consumer demands but also those of other places via the supply chain. In the present study, we combined a multi-region input-output model with adjoint source sensitivity modeling technique at a high resolution (0.25° × 0.3125°) to apportion PM2.5-related mortality risks in the BTH to co

Premature mortality of gastrointestinal cancer in Iran: trends and projections 2001-2030.

BACKGROUND: The present study was conducted to determine the trend and projection of premature mortality from gastrointestinal cancers (GI cancers) at national and subnational levels in Iran. METHODS: Employing the data obtained from Iranian Death Registry System (DRS) and population data from census, the mortality rates of GI cancers was calculated among 30-70 age groups. The trends of esophageal, colon and rectum, gallbladder, pancreases, stomach, and liver cancer premature mortalities were estimated and projected at the national and subnational levels from 2001 to 2030. Then, Spatio-tempor

The unclosing premature mortality gap in gout: a general population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Gout, the most common inflammatory arthritis, is associated with premature mortality. Whether this mortality gap has improved over time, as observed in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), is unknown. METHODS: Using an electronic medical record database representative of the UK general population, we identified incident gout cases and controls between 1999 and 2014. The gout cohort was divided based on year of diagnosis into early (1999-2006) and late (2007-2014) cohorts. We compared the mortality rates and HRs, adjusting for potential confounders between the cohorts. We conducted sensitivit

[Premature mortality excess related to influenza in Spain during an interpandemic period].

BACKGROUND: The indicator of Potential Years of Life Lost (PYLL) has been frequently used to analysis of premature mortality and recently has been used to estimate the impact of the last influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 pandemic. The aim of this study was to estimate the excess deaths from pneumonia and influenza (P&I) in Spain and the PYLL during the period 1980-2008, measuring the mortality attributable to influenza regarding the type/subtype of influenza dominant in each season. METHODS: Monthly excess deaths were calculated with cyclical regression models. The PYLL calculation was performed as the

Estimation of premature mortality from oral cancer in Japan, 1995 and 2005.

BACKGROUND: To better understand the picture of premature death from oral cancer, we estimated years of life lost (YLL) and average years of life lost (AYLL) of this cancer for the years 1995 and 2005 in Japan. METHODS: We obtained the mortality data for 5-year age groups from the Vital Statistics of Japan for the years 1995 and 2005, an interval of 10 years. Age-standardized rates (ASRs) per 100,000 persons were calculated for each subset of oral cancer. We estimated YLL and AYLL according to life tables in Japan to reflect premature mortality. RESULTS: For both men and women combined, 4099

Association between premature mortality and hypopituitarism. West Midlands Prospective Hypopituitary Study Group.

BACKGROUND: Four retrospective studies have reported premature mortality in patients with hypopituitarism with standard mortality ratios (SMRs) varying between 1.20 and 2.17. Patients with hypopituitarism have complex endocrine deficiencies, and the mechanisms underpinning any excess mortality are unknown. Furthermore, the suggestion has emerged that endogenous growth-hormone deficiency might account for any excess mortality. We aimed to clarify these issues by doing a large prospective study of total and specific-cause mortality in patients with hypopituitarism. METHODS: We followed up 1014

Unfavorable Social Determinants of Health and Obesity: A Double Jeopardy for Premature Mortality.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular disease and mortality, but its interplay with social determinants of health (SDoH) remains inadequately studied. Socioeconomic disadvantage can exacerbate health disparities, yet the cumulative impact of SDoH on premature mortality in individuals with obesity is not well understood. OBJECTIVES: SDoH are key contributors to cardiovascular disease, yet their cumulative impact on premature mortality among individuals with obesity remains underexplored. METHODS: This study analyzed data from participants from the United Sta

Ambient PM2.5 exposure and premature mortality burden in the holy city Varanasi, India.

More than 3 million population residing in the holy city Varanasi and sub-urban areas is exposed to very high level of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from various sources. Continuous monitoring by Central Pollution Control Board started only in 2015; therefore what was the pollution level in the past and how it has changed over the years are not known. We use MODIS aerosol products to infer PM2.5 and examine 15-year climatology. Data shows a rapid (1.5-3% per year) increase in PM2.5 in the last 15 years and high (87% days in a year) persistence of PM2.5 above the national air quality standard
