Gluconeogenic substrates and hepatic gluconeogenic enzymes in streptozotocin-diabetic rats: effect of mulberry (Morus indica L.) leaves.

Mulberry (Morus indica L.) leaves, the sole food of the silk worm, were evaluated for antidiabetic effects in streptozotocin (STZ)-diabetic rats. Treatment with dried mulberry leaf powder at 25% of the diet for a period of 8 weeks was found to be remarkably beneficial to STZ-diabetic rats as evidenced by controlled hyperglycemia and glycosuria. In addition, mulberry leaves countered (reversed) the alterations in gluconeogenic substrates in STZ-diabetic rats as indicated by significant reduction in serum pyruvic and lactic acid levels, a significant increase in proteins and a significant decrea

Antidiabetic properties of oral treatment of hexane and chloroform fractions of Morus nigra leaves in streptozotocin-induced rats.

Morus nigra L. has been widely used in Brazilian folk medicine for the treatment of diabetes. We evaluate the chemical composition and antidiabetic properties of the hexane (Hex-Mn) and chloroform (Chlo-Mn) fractions obtained by partition of the crude ethanolic extract from the leaves in rats. Chemical composition analysis of Hex-Mn and Chlor-Mn was performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (CG-MS). In vivo and in vitro studies were carried out to compare the antidiabetic activities of the Hex-Mn and Chlor-Mn fractions. Most of the compounds identified in Hex-Mn were α-linolenic acid,

In vitro anti-diabetic activity and chemical characterization of an apolar fraction of Morus alba leaf water extract.

The tea from the white mulberry (Morus alba L.) leaf is a worldwide known traditional medicine of type II diabetes. Here, we report the investigation of the dichloromethane-soluble fraction obtained in a 0.24% m/m yield from the hot water extract of mulberry leaves. A significant, dose-dependent activity was found by means of the 24-h glucose consumption of fully differentiated adipocytes both in the absence and presence of insulin. The fraction was characterized by HPLC-DAD, GC-MS and GC-FID. The main constituent (40.3% by means of GC-FID) was isolated and identified as loliolide by EIMS, HRE

Green-synthesized iron-zinc oxide nanomaterials immobilized on Morus alba sawdust for highly sensitive optical glucose sensing.

Glucose is a prime source of energy for the human body, and its concentration is a vital biomarker for various pathological conditions. Despite the availability of multiple platforms for glucose sensing, significant efforts are still needed to develop a complete package that is inexpensive, easy to operate, rapid, environmentally friendly, and sensitive. The current work capitalizes on the presence of reductants in Citrus sinensis and the porous surface morphology of Morus alba sawdust. We deposited iron and zinc oxide on sawdust as an ingenious approach to enhance electron mobility in the fab

Solvent dependent synthesis of silver nanoparticles using Morus rubra: correlating physicochemical properties with antimicrobial and anticancer activity.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were successfully synthesised using Morus rubra leaf decoctions prepared using two solvent systems: aqueous (MR-AgNPs-Aq) and hydroalcoholic (MR-AgNPs-HA). The impact of solvent formulation on nanoparticle formation, structural properties, and biological activity was studied. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption analysis validated the synthesis of the nanoparticles through a distinctive plasmonic absorption peak around 450 nm for MR-AgNPs-Aq and in the 500 nm wavelength region for MR-AgNPs-HA, suggesting differences in particle growth and interaction with phytoc

A Flavonoid Malonyltransferase MnMaT1, Directly Regulated by MnATHB51, Leads to the Biosynthesis of Acylated Flavonol Glucosides in Morus notabilis.

Acylated flavonol glucosides like quercetin 3-O-(6″-O-malonylglucoside) are recognized as the major antioxidative flavonoid components in mulberry leaves. Here, we revealed that O-glycosylated and malonylated flavonols were specifically accumulated in younger leaves of Morus notabilis. A key acyltransferase, namely, MnMaT1, in the flavonol-associated module generated through weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA), was identified. Subsequent in vitro enzyme assays and in vivo function studies of MnMaT1 revealed its functional role as malonyl-CoA: flavonoid 3/7-O-glucoside-6″-O-malo

Genetic and functional characterization of loss of growth superiority of 22-ploid Morus nigra L. (2n = 22x = 308).

Genus Morus is well-known for its wide range of cytotypic variation. However, its influence on plant performance is not emphasized, especially at higher ploidy levels. An integrated approach, including data mining, synthesis, reconstruction of transcriptome datasets, field experiment, multiple trait estimation, and in vitro leaf disc senescence assay, was carried out to assess the adaptive strategies of 22-ploid (2n = 22x = 308) M. nigra L. (MN) in comparison to hexaploid (2n = 6x = 84) M. serrata Roxb. (MS). The data synthesis approach suggested that divergence of 22-ploid MN (~ 2.25 MYA) was

Nanoencapsulation of mulberry (Morus alba) polyphenols potentiates neuroprotection against glyphosate-induced oxidative and inflammatory brain injury in rats.

BACKGROUND: Polyphenols derived from Morus alba leaves exhibit strong antioxidant and neuroprotective activities, positioning them as promising candidates for mitigating neurotoxicity caused by environmental contaminants such as glyphosate. Nevertheless, their clinical translation is hindered by poor physicochemical stability, low aqueous solubility, and limited bioavailability. This study investigates whether nanoencapsulation can enhance the stability and neuroprotective efficacy of M. alba polyphenols against glyphosate-induced oxidative brain injury. RESULTS: Morus alba leaf extract was n

A dual mechanism with H2S inhibition and membrane damage of morusin from Morus alba Linn. against MDR-MRSA.

It's urgent to discover new antibiotics along with the increasing emergence and dissemination of multidrug resistant (MDR) bacterial pathogens. In the present investigation, morusin exhibited rapid bactericidal activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) by targeting the phospholipid of bacterial inner membrane, increasing membrane rigidity and disrupting bacterial homeostasis together with the membrane permeability, which caused fundamental metabolic disorders. Furthermore, morusin can also accumulate ROS, suppress H2S produc

Comparative Transcriptome Analysis Identifies Key Defense Genes and Mechanisms in Mulberry (Morus alba) Leaves against Silkworms (Bombyx mori).

As a consequence of long-term coevolution and natural selection, the leaves of mulberry (Morus alba) trees have become the best food source for silkworms (Bombyx mori). Nevertheless, the molecular and genomic basis of defense response remains largely unexplored. In the present study, we assessed changes in the transcriptome changes of mulberry in response to silkworm larval feeding at 0, 3, and 6 h. A total of 4709 (up = 2971, down = 1738) and 3009 (up = 1868, down = 1141) unigenes were identified after 3 and 6 h of silkworm infestation, respectively. MapMan enrichment analysis results show st

Identification and properties of 2,5-dihydroxy-4,3'-di(beta-D-glucopyranosyloxy)-trans-stilbene from Morus bombycis Koidzumi roots.

2,5-Dihydroxy-4,3'-di(beta-d-glucopyranosyloxy)-trans-stilbene was identified from Morus bombycis Koidzumi roots. The 2,5-dihydroxy-4,3'-di(beta-D-glucopyranosyloxy)-trans-stilbene at a dose of 400-600 mg/kg had hepatoprotective activity comparable to the standard agent, silymarin. The biochemical assays were confirmed by histological observations showing that the 2,5-dihydroxy-4,3'-di(beta-d-glucopyranosyloxy)-trans-stilbene from Morus bombycis Koidzumi roots decreased cell ballooning in response to CCl4 treatment. These results demonstrate that the 2,5-dihydroxy-4,3'-di(beta-d-glucopyranosyl
