[Maternal affect regulation of mothers with a history of abuse in mother-infant-interaction].

Maternal intuitive skills can be threatened as a result of severe deprivation or unresolved trauma in the own childhood and can even be inaccessible to the mother. A mother's own childhood experience of abuse maybe a risk factor for repeated child abuse. As a follow-up study to assess the emotional availability of abused mothers it was investigated how a physical or sexual abuse appears in the mother-child interaction and communication in the context of "cycle of abuse" and whether it could give effect to it. Interactions of mothers with abuse experience were compared with those of mothers wit

Mothers' physical abusiveness in a context of violence: effects on the mother-child relationship.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mothers' physical abusiveness on the quality of the mother-child relationship, and note how it further varied by their exposure to interparental violence (IPV). The sample consisted of 232 clinic-referred children, aged 2 to 7 years, and their biological mothers. Slightly more than a quarter of the children (N = 63, 27.2%) had been physically abused by their mothers; approximately half of these children also had a history of exposure to IPV (N = 34, 54%). Investigating effects of physical abuse in the context of IPV history on mothers

Mother-grandmother coparenting relationships in families with incarcerated mothers: a pilot investigation.

Using new methods designed to assess coparenting between incarcerated mothers of preschool-aged children and the maternal grandmothers caring for the children during their absence, we examined relationships between coparenting quality during the mother's jail stay and both concurrent child behavior problems and later coparenting interactions following mothers' release and community reentry. Forty mother-grandmother dyads participated in joint coparenting discussions during the incarceration, with a smaller subset completing a parallel activity at home 1 month postrelease. Both women also parti

Mothers' representations of relationships with their children: relations with mother characteristics and feeding sensitivity.

OBJECTIVE: To examine parenting representations and feeding interactions of mothers and their children with cerebral palsy (CP) and the extent to which mothers' representations predict their feeding behavior beyond other mother and child characteristics. METHODS: Fifty-eight mothers of children with mild to severe CP ages 16 to 52 months were interviewed with an adapted form of the Parent Development Interview (PDI). Correlation and regression analyses examined relations between representations (compliance with parental requests, achievement, secure base, enmeshment, worry about the child's f

Mothers' Experiences of a Women's Health and Empowerment Program for Mothers of a Child with a Disability.

Substantial research identifies mothers of children with a disability as a vulnerable group with compromised health outcomes and restrictions for their own self-care, social, economic and leisure participation. This study investigated perceptions and experiences of mothers following attendance at health education and empowerment workshops (Healthy Mothers Healthy Families). Mixed methods evaluated mothers' experiences. A pragmatic qualitative approach was applied to data analysis of interviews with mothers (N = 19). Four themes emerged: Changes for me; Changes for my family; Wisdom gained; and

Mothers with acute and chronic postpartum psychoses and impact on the mother-infant interaction.

BACKGROUND: Maternal postpartum psychoses pose a serious risk to the mother-infant interaction. It is unclear how different subtypes of postpartum psychosis, including acute and chronic, might differentially affect the mother-infant interaction. METHOD: A systematic search of electronic journal databases was performed. RESULTS: This systematic review yielded 17 studies with adequate overall study quality. They focused on child custody and involvement of social services as indirect indicators of the mother-infant interaction, observed mother-infant interactions as direct indicators, or potent

Postnatal Mother-to-Infant Attachment in Subclinically Depressed Mothers: Dyads at Risk?

BACKGROUND: Dyadic interactions between children and depressed mothers have been characterized as less synchronous and with lower maternal sensitivity, fostering an inharmonious, insecure attachment relationship between mother and child. Thus, these children may experience enhanced early life stress and are at higher risk of disturbed socioemotional development. Recently, this association has also been found in women with mild depressive symptoms. However, potential confounding effects of mother's history of own rearing experiences or infant temperament on the link between depressive symptoms

Housing and Support Services with Homeless Mothers: Benefits to the Mother and Her Children.

This study reports the mental health outcomes of a small randomized clinical trial (n = 60) that compared housing and supportive services (Ecologically-Based Treatment, EBT) to community based housing and support services (treatment as usual, TAU). Mothers receiving EBT, but not those receiving TAU, reported reductions in their children's behavioral health problems. Reductions in mothers' mental health problems and intimate partner violence were observed in both TAU and EBT. The current findings provide evidence supporting the efficacy of independent housing and integrated support services. Gi

[Health conditions for mothers and infants in Ceara. An assessment of the information system for mothers].

By surveying mothers who gave birth in maternity hospitals in the state of Ceara, Brazil, the author assesses health indicators in order to identify the risks pregnant women of different sub-populations undergo. "The conclusion was that a large proportion of the population lives in very unfavorable conditions, with poor access to education and without proper sanitation. Although exposed to greater risks, both overall and biological, the pregnant women in the study undergo fewer prenatal checks than those who have better social and sanitary conditions. This results in greater proportions of low

Probiotics for mother and child.

For the survival of humankind, nothing can be as important as the health of a mother and a child. As the world's population grows to more than 6 billion, it might seem ridiculous to suggest that any real threat exists to the human species. Diseases have long ravaged populations, as have wars, poverty, and malnutrition. Life today is no different with new and emerging diseases such as SARS and Mad Cow Disease leaving a trail of concern around the planet. All that being said, the AIDS crisis is threatening humans like no other. In countries such as Botswana, close to half the population of pregn

[The child of the diabetic mother].

The prevalence of infants of diabetic mothers is estimated at 2-3% of all pregnancies in the Italy, with 60-90% of gestational diabetes. The perinatal mortality rate has decreased ten-fold over the past four decades; at present it is 2% mainly for congenital anomalies. The effects on the fetus and newborns depend on the degree of maternal diabetes. Macrosomia has served as a marker for evaluating morbidity and may be defined as occurring in an infant whose weight with reference gestation, exceeds the 97.5 percentile. This is mainly due to fetal hyperinsulinism secondary to hyperglycemia from i

Baby v mother.

The right of a child born disabled as a result of a negligent act committed by another whilst the child was in utero is a recognized principle of law in the major common law countries. It is also recognized that a child who suffers injuries caused to it due to a negligent act committed prior to conception may also have a right to seek compensation. The right to bring such an action is contingent upon the child being born alive and being able to prove a causal connection between the alleged negligent act and the injuries complained of. However, with few exceptions, such legal actions have to da
