Sphingidae moths as a new host record for Ophryocystis aff. elektroscirrha (Apicomplexa: Neogregarinida) in Brazil.

Ophryocystis elektroscirrha is a parasite primarily described in Danaini butterflies. We investigated the occurrence of Ophryocystis-like cysts in lepidopterans from collections and field samplings in Mato Grosso, Brazil. We report the first record of Ophryocystis aff. elektroscirrha in Lepidoptera from Brazil and the first worldwide record in the Sphingidae (Eumorpha analis and Agrius cingulata). No infections were detected in Danaus species. Our findings suggest that the known host range of Ophryocystis is underestimated. We highlight the importance of examining non-traditional host groups a

A Testis-Specific Aralkylamine N-Acetyltransferase Regulates Dimorphic Sperm Function and Male Fertility in Moths.

Most Lepidopterans produce two distinct sperm types-nucleated eupyrene (fertile) and anucleate apyrene (non-fertile), yet the genetic mechanisms governing this dimorphism remain poorly understood. Using the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) as a model, we identified a Lepidoptera-conserved, testis-specific arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (LTNAT) indispensable for male fertility. Functional analyses showed that LTNAT is expressed in both sperm types, and its depletion disrupts mitochondrial derivatives (MDs) in eupyrene sperm and drastically impairs apyrene sperm motility. Multi-omics an

Anatomical Comparison of Antennal Lobes in Two Sibling Ectropis Moths: Emphasis on the Macroglomerular Complex.

Ectropis obliqua and Ectropis grisescens are two sibling moth species of tea plantations in China. The male antennae of both species can detect shared and specific sex pheromone components. Thus, the primary olfactory center, i.e., the antennal lobe (AL), plays a vital role in distinguishing the sex pheromones. To provide evidence for the possible mechanism allowing this distinction, in this study, we compared the macroglomerular complex (MGC) of the AL between the males of the two species by immunostaining using presynaptic antibody and propidium iodide (PI) with antennal backfills, and confo

Adaptive Introgression across Semipermeable Species Boundaries between Local Helicoverpa zea and Invasive Helicoverpa armigera Moths.

Hybridization between invasive and native species has raised global concern, given the dramatic increase in species range shifts and pest outbreaks due to anthropogenic dispersal. Nevertheless, secondary contact between sister lineages of local and invasive species provides a natural laboratory to understand the factors that determine introgression and the maintenance or loss of species barriers. Here, we characterize the early evolutionary outcomes following secondary contact between invasive Helicoverpa armigera and native H. zea in Brazil. We carried out whole-genome resequencing of Helicov

Biochemical mode of action and differential activity of new ecdysone agonists against mosquitoes and moths.

THQ (1-aroyl-4-(arylamino)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline) compounds were identified by FMC Corporation in cell-based assays that used ecdysone receptors from Drosophila melanogaster, Heliothis virescens, or Plodia interpunctata. THQ compounds showed weak insecticidal activity against H. virescens and, therefore, were not developed further. Several ecdysone agonists based on THQ chemotype have been synthesized and tested for their activity against a number of EcRs in transactivation assays. The THQ compound, RG-120768, activated AaEcR (EcR from A. aegypti) but did not activate EcRs cloned from ot

Skin-piercing blood-sucking moths I: ecological and ethological studies on Calpe eustrigata (Lepid., noctuidae).

The Noctuid Calpe [Calyptral] eustrigata Hmps. was reported as a skin-piercing blood-sucking moth for the first time in Malaya (Bänziger, 1968) and is so far the only lepidopteran proved to suck blood by means of a piercing act. A few field observations and the description of the piercing behaviour of caged moths were given. Apart from a taxonomic study of the genus Calpe (Berio, 1956), a single record (Büttiker, 1969) and some notes on the moth's proboscis and possible evolutionary pathway (Bänziger, 1970, 1971, 1972) to our knowledge no other data have been published on the moth after its de

Host phenology-driven infestation patterns of the carob moth (Ectomyelois ceratoniae) in Mediterranean walnut orchards: insights from comparison with codling moth (Cydia pomonella).

BACKGROUND: While Cydia pomonella has long been regarded as the key lepidopteran pest of walnut in Europe, field observations increasingly indicate that Ectomyelois ceratoniae is becoming dominant in Mediterranean orchards. To assess their relative importance, we compared the incidence and seasonal dynamics of both species across multiple orchards and years. Because fruit susceptibility varies with ripening stage, aligning pest monitoring with host phenology may improve the timing and integration of control tactics. This study examined the synchrony between walnut phenology and the temporal pa

Insecticide resistance and characteristics of mutations related to target site insensitivity of diamondback moths in Taiwan.

Diamondback moth (DBM, Plutella xylostella) is the most significant pest of cruciferous vegetables as they rapidly develop high-level resistance to many insecticides. Monitoring DBM susceptibility and target-site mutation frequency is essential for pest control. In this study, 10 insecticides were tested on 11 field populations. Frequencies of target-site mutations (including para, ace1, Rdl1, RyR1, and nAChRα6 genes) were estimated by pyrosequencing. Insecticides registered after 2007 for DBM control in Taiwan, i.e., spinetoram, chlorantraniliprole, chlorfenapyr, metaflumizone, and flubendiam

Moth resonant mechanics are tuned to wingbeat frequency and energetic demands.

An insect's wingbeat frequency is a critical determinant of its flight performance and varies by multiple orders of magnitude across Insecta. Despite potential energetic benefits for an insect that matches its wingbeat frequency to its resonant frequency, recent work has shown that moths may operate off their resonant peak. We hypothesized that across species, wingbeat frequency scales with resonance frequency to maintain favourable energetics, but with an offset in species that use frequency modulation as a means of flight control. The moth superfamily Bombycoidea is ideal for testing this hy

Hearing on the fly: the effects of wing position on noctuid moth hearing.

The ear of the noctuid moth has only two auditory neurons, A1 and A2, which function in detecting predatory bats. However, the noctuid's ears are located on the thorax behind the wings. Therefore, as these moths need to hear during flight, it was hypothesized that wing position may affect their hearing. The wing was fixed in three different positions: up, flat and down. An additional subset of animals was measured with freely moving wings. In order to negate any possible acoustic shadowing or diffractive effects, all wings were snipped, leaving the proximal-most portion and the wing hinge inta

Apple volatiles synergize the response of codling moth to pear ester.

Codling moth, Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is a major cosmopolitan pest of apple and other pome fruits. Ethyl (E,Z)-2,4-decadienoate (pear ester) has been identified as a host-derived kairomone for female and male codling moths. However, pear ester has not performed similarly in different fruit production areas in terms of the relative magnitude of moth catch, especially the proportion of females caught. Our work was undertaken to identify host volatiles from apples, and to investigate whether these volatiles can be used to enhance the efficacy of host kairomone pear ester fo

The Microbiology of Phane, an Edible Caterpillar of the Emperor Moth, Imbrasia belina.

The larvae of Imbrasia belina (Westwood) are cooked and sun dried to make a product known as phane, which is consumed as a delicacy. A study was conducted to determine the sanitary quality of phane and the kinds of microorganisms associated with it. It also looked into the potential for the existence of health risk associated with its consumption. Laboratory- and field-processed phane and that from open markets were subjected to microbiological analyses. The total microbial population for the larvae was in the range of 3 × 105 to 2 × 107 CFU/g. Species belonging to seven genera of bacteria and

Distribution of acetylcholinesterase activity in the deutocerebrum of the sphinx moth Manduca sexta.

We have used a cytochemical technique to investigate the distribution of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the deutocerebrum of the brain of the sphinx moth Manduca sexta. To distinguish between extra- and intracellular pools of the enzyme, some brains were treated prior to histochemical staining with echothiophate, an irreversible AChE inhibitor which penetrates cell membranes very slowly and, therefore, inhibits only extracellular AChE. In the antennal nerve, fascicles of presumably mechanosensory fibers show echothiophate-insensitive AChE activity. They bypass the antennal lobe and pr

Vitamin A deficiency: effect on retinal structure of the moth Manduca sexta.

Sphingid moths (Manduca sexta) were reared for several generations on an artificial diet deficient in vitamin A and its precursors. Retinal tissue from depleted moths was removed for histological examination. There was extensive histolysis in the retinal epithelium and underlying nervous and connective tissues. This pathology correlated with severe visual impairment, even though normal growth, metamorphosis, and reproduction occurred. In the adult this pathology could be reversed when the larvae were reared only on tobacco (its usual host) or on the artificial diet supplemented with beta-carot

Potential Management Options for the Invasive Moth Spodoptera frugiperda in Europe.

We here review and discuss management options that growers in Europe could take in response to the expected invasion of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The focus is put on maize but the information provided is also relevant for other crops potentially affected. A sound forecasting system for fall armyworm both on a regional as well as at local scale should be established to alert growers as early as possible. Whilst a number of cultural control methods are adopted by maize growers in different regions globally to fight fall armyworm, many of them may either n

Sublethal concentration of insecticide amplifies interference competition in a tortrix moth.

Insecticides are extensively used worldwide to kill insect pests, yet organisms are most often exposed to insecticides at sublethal concentrations. Our understanding of sublethal effects on life histories is needed to predict the impact of insecticides on population dynamics and improve insecticide use and pest control. Sublethal concentrations can impact life histories directly and indirectly through changes in the intraspecific competition. Yet, few studies have evaluated the sublethal effects on intraspecific competition and these do not disentangle the insecticide effects on interference c
