Changes in cervical motion after cervical spinal motion preservation surgery.

BACKGROUND: For patients with single-level cervical radiculopathy, various types of motion preservation surgeries, such as total disc replacement (TDR), posterior cervical foraminotomy (PCF) and posterior percutaneous endoscopic foraminotomy and discectomy (PECF), are available. In addition to motion preservation, the quality of motion is an important issue. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of these surgeries on cervical motion by comparing the instantaneous axis of rotation (IAR) among PECF, TDR and PCF at the index and superior/inferior adjacent segments. METHODS:

Scaphoid and lunate motion during a wrist dart throw motion.

PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this study was to measure the in vitro scaphoid and lunate motion during 9 different variations of a wrist dart throw motion. Another goal was to determine the specific dart throw motion that minimized scaphoid and lunate motion. METHODS: Scaphoid and lunate motion were recorded in 7 cadaver forearms during various combinations of wrist dart throw motions caused by a wrist joint motion simulator. RESULTS: During wrist flexion and extension the scaphoid and lunate motions follow the wrist motion. During wrist radial and ulnar deviation the scaphoid and lunate c

Effects of virtual body motion on visually-induced motion sickness.

To reduce possibilities of visually-induced motion sickness caused by animations, video games and movies, we need to develop an evaluation method of visually-induced motion sickness. Our previous results have shown that virtual roll motion had the most effective for producing the sickness. In the present study, we focused on the effectivity of image types, such as random dots and ordinary scene, and also the effectivity of virtual rotation speed on the sickness. In the first experiment, we confirmed our former results that virtual roll motion produced the highest score relating motion sickness

Roll motion stimuli: sensory conflict, perceptual weighting and motion sickness.

In an experiment with 17 subjects, interactions of visual roll motion stimuli and vestibular body tilt stimuli were examined in determining the subjective vertical. Interindividual differences in weighting the visual information were observed, but in general, visual and vestibular responses added in setting the vertical. Despite the conflicting sensory information, motion sickness was not reported apart from one subject on one single occasion. This is in conflict with the sensory mismatch theory on motion sickness, but in agreement with the subjective vertical conflict theory.

Intact "biological motion" and "structure from motion" perception in a patient with impaired motion mechanisms: a case study.

A series of psychophysical tests examining early and later aspects of image-motion processing were conducted in a patient with bilateral lesions involving the posterior visual pathways, affecting the lateral parietal-temporal-occipital cortex and the underlying white matter (as shown by magnetic resonance imaging studies and confirmed by neuro-ophthalmological and neuropsychological examinations). Visual acuity, form discrimination, color, and contrast-sensitivity discrimination were normal whereas spatial localization, line bisection, depth, and binocular stereopsis were severely impaired. HLM-MOCAP: A motion capture dataset of context-dependent human arm motion for human-like robot motion generation.

HLM-MOCAP is a motion capture dataset of context-dependent human arm movements designed to support the generation of human-like robot trajectories in industrial and collaborative settings. Data were recorded in a laboratory environment using an eight-camera infrared motion capture system (Vicon MX T10) operating at 200 Hz with 1120 × 896 px resolution and passive 1.5 mm retroreflective markers. Forty healthy adults (29 male, 11 female; broad age range from late adolescence to adulthood) performed a set of seven upper-limb tasks at a standardized workstation with marked start and target locatio

Evaluation of Load on Cervical Disc Prosthesis by Imposing Complex Motion: Multiplanar Motion and Combined Rotational-Translational Motion.

(1) Background: The kinematic characteristics of disc prosthesis undergoing complex motion are not well understood. Therefore, examining complex motion may provide an improved understanding of the post-operative behavior of spinal implants. (2) Methods: The aim of this study was to develop kinematic tests that simulate multiplanar motion and combined rotational-translational motion in a disc prosthesis. In this context, five generic zirconia-toughened alumina (BIOLOX®delta, CeramTec, Germany) ball and socket samples were tested in a 6 DOF spine simulator under displacement control with an axia

Motion Blur Microscopy.

Imaging and characterizing the dynamics of cellular adhesion in blood samples is of fundamental importance in understanding biological function. In vitro microscopy methods are widely used for this task, but typically require diluting the blood with a buffer to allow for transmission of light. However whole blood provides crucial mechanical and chemical signaling cues that influence adhesion dynamics, which means that conventional approaches lack the full physiological complexity of living microvasculature. We propose to overcome this challenge by a new in vitro imaging method which we call mo

Motion sickness susceptibility.

Motion sickness can be caused by a variety of motion environments (e.g., cars, boats, planes, tilting trains, funfair rides, space, virtual reality) and given a sufficiently provocative motion stimulus almost anyone with a functioning vestibular system can be made motion sick. Current hypotheses of the 'Why?' of motion sickness are still under investigation, the two most important being 'toxin detector' and the 'vestibular-cardiovascular reflex'. By contrast, the 'How?' of motion sickness is better understood in terms of mechanisms (e.g., 'sensory conflict' or similar) and stimulus properties

Space motion sickness.

Motion sickness remains a persistent problem in spaceflight. The present review summarizes available knowledge concerning the incidence and onset of space motion sickness and aspects of the physiology of motion sickness. Proposed etiological factors in the elicitation of space motion sickness are evaluated including fluid shifts, head movements, visual orientation illusions, Coriolis cross-coupling stimulation, and otolith asymmetries. Current modes of treating space motion sickness are described. Theoretical models and proposed ground-based paradigms for understanding and studying space motio

Space motion sickness.

Space Motion Sickness (SMS) is the malady which frequently occurs shortly after attainment of sustained exposure to hypogravity. It is characterised by a variety of symptoms, which may proceed to nausea and eventually vomiting. Natural adaptation usually occurs if exposure to hypogravity is maintained. The condition appears to be the manifestation of motion sickness that is specific to hypogravity. It is associated with otolith-canal and otolith-eye conflict. SMS may have operational significance in impairing the performance of spacecraft crews. The condition is likely to be amenable to treatm

MotionDreamer: Generating Continuous Intermediate Motions for Complex Motion Interpolation.

Interpolating complex motions is challenging due to their nonlinear, non-rigid nature and ambiguities. Recent diffusion-based methods mitigate this challenge as a conditional generation task, optionally with linear motion control. However, they cannot handle these complex motions because their reconstruction training objective biases models toward per-frame appearance fidelity, which can lead to unnatural movement. To address this, we propose MotionDreamer, a novel framework that instills effective motion priors for all intermediate frames to video generators by regularizing diffusion training

Motion control, motion sickness, and the postural dynamics of mobile devices.

Drivers are less likely than passengers to experience motion sickness, an effect that is important for any theoretical account of motion sickness etiology. We asked whether different types of control would affect the incidence of motion sickness, and whether any such effects would be related to participants' control of their own bodies. Participants played a video game on a tablet computer. In the Touch condition, the device was stationary and participants controlled the game exclusively through fingertip inputs via the device's touch screen. In the Tilt condition, participants held the device

Effects of anti-motion sickness drugs on motion sickness in rats.

Pica, the eating of nonnutritive substances such as kaolin, can be induced by rotation in rats. We used this rotation-induced pica as a behavioral index of motion sickness in rats and examined whether diphenhydramine, methamphetamine and scopolamine, which are anti-motion sickness drugs for humans, are effective for reducing motion sickness in rats. Intraperitoneal injection of diphenhydramine or methamphetamine suppressed the rotation-induced kaolin intake of rats. Intraperitoneal injection of scopolamine had no effect on the rotation-induced kaolin intake, but its transdermal administration

Repetitive motion injuries.

Repetitive motion injuries have presented clinicians with a significant challenge over the past two and a half decades. Acceptable treatment of inflammatory disorders is well established, but compressive neuropathies and nonspecific complaints of numbness, tingling, and discomfort in the upper extremity present vexing dilemmas. Current research and experience point to multilevel problems, including posturally induced muscular imbalance. Although surgical solutions to these problems are sometimes indicated, conservative approaches successfully treat many individuals and have narrowed the scope
