Protective effect of female gender against bone loss in the forearm following clean-cut tendon injuries, repair, and passive mobilization.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is any significant difference in bone loss between female and male patients as a result of early passive mobilization after surgery for acute tendon-artery-nerve clean-cut injuries at the wrist level. A total of 51 patients who underwent such operations were enrolled in this study. Group I consisted of 40 male patients (mean age 30.2 +/- 9.1 years, age range 15-44 years) and group II consisted of 11 female patients (mean age 24.1 +/- 9.9 years, age range 14-43 years); postmenopausal women were not included in this group. Continuous passive motion not affect the knee motion and the surgical wound aspect after total knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess whether use of continuous passive motion (CPM) could improve range of motion in patients after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), if it could affect the surgical wound aspect (SWA) and if it could influence on pain management after TKA. METHODS: We randomized 210 patients in two groups, 102 patients in the CPM group, who received a standard rehabilitation protocol together with CPM application; and 108 patients in the no-CPM group, without CPM. Variables as knee motion (flexion, extension, range of motion) and pain were measured before surgery, on the 1st, 2

Application of continuous passive motion in patients with distal radius fractures: A randomized clinical trial.

The aim of this study was to know if applying continuous passive motion (CPM) in addition to routine exercises is more effective than routine exercises alone in pain reduction, range of motion (ROM) and function improvement after distal radius fractures (DRFs). In this randomized controlled trial, 21 patients with non-stabilized DRF after pin removal were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group received stretching exercises with CPM machine for 2×15min per session. Both groups received routine exercises for 1h, three times a week for 4 weeks. The primary ou

Treatment of subacute low back pain with a novel device for continuous passive motion of the spine: a report of three cases.

Patients experiencing subacute low back pain (LBP) represent a challenge for the physical therapist. There have been few studies on the use of continuous passive motion of the lumbar spine for the treatment of LBP. Three patients with symptoms of subacute LBP without radiculopathy were treated using a novel device for continuous passive motion of the lumbar spine. The protocol consisted of 12 sessions of lumbar continuous passive motion at 30 minutes per session two to three times per week for 4 to 5 weeks. Outcomes were assessed at baseline and after 12 sessions at 4 to 5 weeks by Oswestry sc

Shoulder rheumatoid arthritis associated with chondromatosis, treated by arthroscopy.

We present a case of rheumatoid arthritis that affected the right shoulder and was associated with chondromatosis and multiple loose body formation. The arthritis was treated arthroscopically with satisfactory results after a follow-up period of 15 months. In our case, arthroscopic debridement and partial synovectomy not only relieved the pain but also improved the range of motion the night after surgery. The multiple loose bodies irritating the synovium and causing effusion, crepitus, and locking were also removed. One may need to change portals of the scope and suction cannula to remove loos

[Treatment of neurogenic heterotopic ossifications (NHO) in brain injured patients: review of literature].

This article is a review of the literature about treatment of neurogenic heterotopic ossifications (NHO) in brain injured patients, from analysis of the main data bases (Medline, Embase, Reedoc). In spite of the hope they arouse in the seventies, biphosphonates, including etidronate, have not demonstrated their efficiency to inhibit NHO in clinical practice. In fact a very early diagnosis, with the scintigraphic overactivity of the joint area and the increase of serum alkaline phosphatases, must lead to begin passive motion and postures, and may contribute to save functional range of motion. Evaluation of admittance control as an alternative to passive arm supports to increase upper extremity function for individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The degree of upper extremity active range of motion provided by an admittance control robot compared with a commercially available passive arm support for individuals with DMD who have limited arm function was investigated in this study. The reachable workspace evaluation was used to assess active range of motion provided by both devices. A visual analog scale was also used to secure participant-reported outcome measures. The admittance control robot significantly increased reachable surface area scores compared with the passive arm support for the dominant arm (Wilcoxon T = 5, P = .022, r2 =

Total glenoid fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Fractures affecting the entire glenoid fossa are termed comminuted or total glenoid fractures. However, there are no detailed studies of total glenoid fractures, and only brief mentions can be found in the literature. METHODS: The group comprised 12 patients (mean age, 39 years), who sustained 13 fractures of the glenoid fossa. In all the fractures, all parts of the glenoid fossa were separated from the scapular neck or body. In total 5 patients (6 fractures) were treated non-operatively and 7 patients were operated on. The method of treatment was based on displacement of the fr

[Arthrolysis of the elbow in posttraumatic contracture].

Intra- and periarticular fractures about the elbow joint are treated with open reduction and internal fixation. This allows early functional after-treatment. Nevertheless, the range of motion remains more or less unsatisfactory. In these cases open arthrolysis provides a considerable improvement in joint function. We therefore recommend this operation when the hardware is removed about 9 months after the accident. The reasons for post-traumatic contracture of the elbow could be intrinsic such as interposed fragments, intra-articular adhesions, incongruity of the articular surfaces--or extrinsi

Superior results with continuous passive motion compared to active motion after periosteal transplantation. A retrospective study of human patella cartilage defect treatment.

Fifty-seven consecutive patients (33 men and 24 women), with a mean age of 32 years (range 16-53 years), who suffered from an isolated full-thickness cartilage defect of the patella and disabling knee pain of long duration, were treated by autologous periosteal transplantation to the cartilage defect. The first 38 consecutive patients (group A) were postoperatively treated with continuous passive motion (CPM), and the next 19 consecutive patients (group B) were treated with active motion for the first 5 days postoperatively. In both groups, the initial regimens were followed by active motion,

Clinical evaluation of usefulness and effectiveness of sitting type continuous passive motion machines in patients with total knee arthroplasty: a study protocol for a single-blinded randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is an important management strategy for patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) refractory to conservative management. Postoperative range of motion (ROM) exercise is important to recover patients' activities of daily living. Continuous passive motion (CPM) is a machine that provides passive ROM exercises of the knee joint in a pre-defined arc of motion. The short- and long-term effects of CPM exercise are controversial. We hypothesized that the inconsistent results of the CPM exercise are due to poor fitting of CPM machines and measurement errors. This

Effects of therapeutic passive exercise of hip and knee joints on the soleus H-reflex.

UNLABELLED: The effect of passive movement of a leg on alpha-motoneurons of the soleus was investigated while the ankle was immobilized. Electrophysiological parameters of the H-reflex were used. Nineteen fully informed volunteers with no history of neurological or internal disease participated in the study. The mean age across all the experiments was 20.9 years. Contributions to the modulation of the soleus H-reflex by hip and knee joint movements were analyzed in two tasks. These were the most general movement methods used in physical therapy. Soleus H-reflexes were measured six times per ex

Continuous passive motion (CPM): theory and principles of clinical application.

Stiffness following surgery or injury to a joint develops as a progression of four stages: bleeding, edema, granulation tissue, and fibrosis. Continuous passive motion (CPM) properly applied during the first two stages of stiffness acts to pump blood and edema fluid away from the joint and periarticular tissues. This allows maintenance of normal periarticular soft tissue compliance. CPM is thus effective in preventing the development of stiffness if full motion is applied immediately following surgery and continued until swelling that limits the full motion of the joint no longer develops. Patient-cooperative strategies for robot-aided treadmill training: first experimental results.

Task-oriented repetitive movements can improve motor performance in patients with neurological or orthopaedic lesions. The application of robotics and automation technology can serve to assist, enhance, evaluate, and document neurological and orthopedic rehabilitation. This paper deals with the application of "patient-cooperative" techniques to robot-aided gait rehabilitation of neurological disorders. We define patient-cooperative to mean that, during movement, the technical system takes into account the patient's intention and voluntary efforts rather than imposing any predefined movements o
