Effect of glucagon on sphincter of Oddi motor activity.

In this study the effects of glucagon 1-29 peptide and the metabolically inactive portion glucagon 1-21 have been evaluated on sphincter of Oddi (SO) motor activity. A triple lumen catheter perfused by a minimally compliant infusion system was used to record intraoddian pressures at endoscopy. A strictly blind evaluation of tracings was performed. Neither peptide administration appeared to induce any relevant variation of SO resting pressure nor frequency, amplitude and duration of phasic contractions. Data of the present study would not support the use of glucagon whenever a spasmolytic effec

Continuous motor unit activity confined to the upper extremities.

We report a patient with clinical vermiform motor activity, muscle cramps, delayed relaxation of grip, and continuous motor unit discharges who developed mild symmetric symptoms in the upper extremities following a viral infection. Treatment with carbamazepine produced considerable symptomatic improvement. Needle electromyography (EMG) in several muscles showed irregular grouped spontaneous discharges composed of potentials resembling normal motor units. The discharges occurred asynchronously in distal muscles with identical and different peripheral nerve innervation but were not seen in more

Motor activity of the distal oesophagus and gastrooesophageal reflux.

The relationship between intraoesophageal pH value and motor activity of the lower oesophageal body and sphincter was investigated by simultaneous evaluation of intraluminal pressure and pH in 13 patients complaining of heartburn and regurgitation. One hundred and thirty one episodes of gastro-oesophageal reflux were recorded. One hundred and eighteen (90.1%) were preceded by a swallow (one to 12 seconds), 13 reflux episodes (9.9%) were not preceded by a swallow. Gastro-oesophageal refluxes preceded by swallow were accompanied by an equal number of normal and abnormal primary peristaltic seque

Motor activity after colon replacement of esophagus. Manometric evaluation.

Motor activity of the colon transplant for esophageal reconstruction is a point of controversy. In this paper we present manometric studies carried out in 15 patients subjected to isoperistaltic colon interposition. Manometric studies were carried out with two polyvinyl water-filled catheters inserted through pressure transducers. Basal colonic activity and motor activity following several stimuli and "dry swallows" were registered. The type of waves after stimuli were classified as (1) synchronous, (2) sequential or progressive, and (3) segmental. Details of the basal colonic waves and colon

[Disorder of gamma-motor neuronal activity in experimental thyrotoxicosis].

The activity of gamma-motor neurons was studied in the anesthetized rats following per os administration of thyroidin for 3 weeks. In experimental thyrotoxicosis against the backgrounds of an increased amount of mute filaments isolated from the stem of the n. gastrocnemius there was an increase in the frequency of discharge of the flexors and extensors of the gamma-motor neurons. A high frequency not peculiar to that of intact animals was recorded in the flexors of the gamma-motor neurons of the animals receiving thyroidin.

Mapping the Correlation of Everyday Physical Activity With Motor and Non-Motor Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease.

BackgroundPeople with Parkinson's experience both motor and non-motor symptoms (NMS), with bradykinesia and dyskinesia being key motor symptoms. People with Parkinson's are typically less physically active than age matched peers, and physical inactivity is associated with more severe symptoms, reduced functional capacity, and lower quality of life. Most prior research has relied on self-reported data, which can introduce bias. Wearable technologies enable the objective assessment of physical activity (PA) and symptom severity in real world settings.ObjectiveTo examine the relationship between

Relationships between moderate vigorous physical activity, motor- and health-related fitness and motor skills in children.

BACKGROUND: Childhood is an important transitional period for the development of healthy physical activity (PA) behaviours, so it is important to understand its impact on a healthy lifestyle. AIM: This study aimed to determine the influences of sex, socioeconomic status (SES) and body composition (BC) on the relationships between PA, motor skills, motor- and health-related physical fitness in 5-8-year-olds. SETTING: Participants were a subsample consisting of 299 children (150 boys, 149 girls, mean age 6.83 ± 0.96 years) from the Exercise, Arterial Modulation and Nutrition in Youth South Afr

Activities of daily living in motor neuron disease: role of behavioural and motor changes.

Impairment in the activities of daily living (ADL) in motor neuron disease (MND) has been little investigated. The contributions of both behavioural and motor changes on functional performance have not been explored. A postal survey in New South Wales, Australia, included assessments of ADL, behavioural change (carer-based) and MND severity. Eighty-two patients were subdivided into groups according to onset presentation: bulbar (n=23) and limb (n=59). There were significant differences in ADL performance between limb and bulbar onset groups depending on ADL task. Disability was also dependent

Individualized Remotely Supervised Motor Activity Programs Promote Rehabilitation Goal Achievement, Motor Functioning, and Physical Activity of People with Rett Syndrome-A Single-Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Gross motor function in Rett syndrome (RTT) is always limited. The complex clinical picture typical of most people with RTT requires intensive and specific rehabilitation programs. Previous reports on remotely supervised motor activity programs suggested positive outcomes for this population. The current article describes the impact of a remote-supervised motor activity program carried out by family members of individuals with RTT on achieving rehabilitation goals and improving gross and fine motor functioning and daily physical activity. METHODS: Forty subjects with RTT followed

Cortical motor activity modulates respiration and reduces apnoea in neonates.

Respiration is governed by a widespread network of cortical and subcortical structures. This complex communication between the brain and lungs is altered in pathological conditions. Apnoea - the cessation of respiration - is a common condition in infants, particularly those born prematurely. Apnoea in infants is believed to relate to immaturity of brainstem respiratory centres; involvement of the cortex in respiration in infants has yet to be explored. We investigated if there was any evidence for cortical coupling with respiration in newborn humans and whether it relates to apnoea. Using simu

Activity-dependent synaptic plasticity and metaplasticity in spinal motor networks.

Throughout life, neuronal network properties are modulated according to both external and internal stimuli. These adaptive capabilities of the central nervous system (CNS) have been generically termed "plasticity". One prominent form of CNS plasticity is the capability of synapses to change their strength. Synaptic strength is not a constant value but depends at each moment on the synapse's past activity. These changes in transmission efficacy are called activity-dependent synaptic plasticity (ADSP) and result in an increase (potentiation) or a decrease (depression) in synaptic strength. The a

A circuit for motor cortical modulation of auditory cortical activity.

Normal hearing depends on the ability to distinguish self-generated sounds from other sounds, and this ability is thought to involve neural circuits that convey copies of motor command signals to various levels of the auditory system. Although such interactions at the cortical level are believed to facilitate auditory comprehension during movements and drive auditory hallucinations in pathological states, the synaptic organization and function of circuitry linking the motor and auditory cortices remain unclear. Here we describe experiments in the mouse that characterize circuitry well suited t

Interhemispheric motor inhibition: its role in controlling electromyographic mirror activity.

Electromyographic mirror activity (MA) refers to involuntary activation of the non-active limb during intended strictly unilateral movements of the other limb. MA occurs in the majority of healthy adults but little is known about its neurophysiological foundation. Here we examined in healthy adults the hypothesis that transcallosal interhemispheric inhibition (IHI) between the primary motor cortices determines the extent to which MA occurs. IHI was tested by an established paired transcranial magnetic stimulation protocol [A. Ferbert et al. (1992) J. Physiol. (Lond.), 453, 525-546]. In a first

Antroduodenojejunal motor activity in untreated and treated celiac disease patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Patients with celiac disease may present with abnormal upper gut motor activity. However, it is not known if these abnormalities persist after the introduction of a gluten-free diet. The present study aimed to compare antroduodenojejunal motor variables recorded in untreated celiac patients with those of celiac patients given a gluten-free diet and healthy volunteers. METHODS: Eleven untreated celiac disease patients, 12 age- and sex-matched celiac patients on a gluten-free diet (at least 12 months), and 33 controls entered the study. Antroduodenojejunal motility was recor

AAEM minimonograph #44: diseases associated with excess motor unit activity.

Stiff-man syndrome is due to hyperexcitability of anterior horn cells, possibly related to interference with the synthesis or action of gamma-aminobutyric acid. Unexpected acoustic and exteroceptive stimuli produce exaggerated muscle responses. Needle electrode examination of involved muscles yields nonspecific findings and demonstrates involuntary motor unit activity. The appearance and firing pattern of motor units are normal except that agonist and antagonist muscles may contract concurrently. Continuous muscle fiber activity (Isaacs' syndrome) comprises a heterogeneous group of hereditary

Maturation of antroduodenal motor activity in preterm and term infants.

Previous studies have shown that duodenal motility patterns differ in preterm and term infants, but antral motor activities were not compared. Using a validated, low-compliance, continuous-perfusion, neonatal manometric system, antral and duodenal motility was studied in 19 preterm and nine term infants. Antral motility consisted of isolated single contractions and clustered phasic contractions in term and preterm infants. There were no differences in the occurrence or amplitude of antral activity between the two groups of infants. Thus, there was no change of antral motor activity with advanc

Gastroduodenal motor activity associated with gastric emptying rate in sheep.

1. Gastric emptying rate was calculated from dye dilution and was measured as the net flow over periods of 5 days through an electromagnetic probe inserted into a T-cannula, 5 cm beyond the pylorus in conscious hay-fed sheep. The net aboral flow was related to the motor activity of the antrum and duodenal bulb which was recorded via chronically fixed strain-gauge transducers. Nichrome wire electrodes were also implanted in order to quantify the electrical activity of the musculature associated with the abomasal outflow in sheep sustained on a liquid diet infused at fixed rates. 2. The abomasal

Sleep EEG and motor activity as indicators in affective states.

This report reviews a number of studies which support our current classification schema for affective disorders. This classification differentiates between an anxious-hyperactive type and an anergic-hypoactive type which are then further subdivided into primary and secondary affective disorders. While the motor and activity measurements are for the most part limited to patients suffering from primary affective disease, current studies under way indicate that secondary affective disorders may also have characteristic biologic changes. EEG sleep and motor activity parameters provide useful point
