Fine Motor Skills of Children With Amblyopia Improve Following Binocular Treatment.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether reduced fine motor skills in children with amblyopia improve after binocular treatment and whether improvements are sustained once treatment has ceased. METHODS: Fine motor skills (FMS [Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency]), visual acuity (VA [Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study chart]) and level of binocular function (BF [Randot preschool stereoacuity and Worth 4 Dot]) were measured in children with amblyopia (n = 20; age: 8.5 ± 1.3 years; 11 anisometropic; 5 strabismic; 4 mixed) and in a group of visually normal

Motor and visuomotor skills of children with Asperger's disorder: preliminary findings.

While motor clumsiness is frequently described as an associated feature of Asperger's Disorder, little research has examined specific motor skills and the relation among aspects of motor performance in this population. The present purpose was to present preliminary findings for three aspects of Asperger's: the presence and magnitude of gross motor and fine motor deficits, the presence and magnitude of visuomotor deficits, and the relation between motor functioning and visuomotor skills. 17 boys, 6 to 13 years old, with Asperger's were tested using standardized measures of gross, fine, and visu

Effect of different motor skills training on motor control network in the frontal lobe and basal ganglia.

During human motor control, the three pathways of motor control coordinate to complete human response and inhibition control, so whether different types of motor skills training will affect the three pathways of motor control is the main question in this study. Magnetic resonance imaging was combined with behavioural evaluation to analyse the effects of different special training sessions on the motor control network of the frontal lobe and basal ganglia and to explore the role of the central nervous system in the regulation of motor behaviour. A Stop-signal paradigm was used to measure reacti

Goal-related feedback guides motor exploration and redundancy resolution in human motor skill acquisition.

The plasticity of the human nervous system allows us to acquire an open-ended repository of sensorimotor skills in adulthood, such as the mastery of tools, musical instruments or sports. How novel sensorimotor skills are learned from scratch is yet largely unknown. In particular, the so-called inverse mapping from goal states to motor states is underdetermined because a goal can often be achieved by many different movements (motor redundancy). How humans learn to resolve motor redundancy and by which principles they explore high-dimensional motor spaces has hardly been investigated. To study t

A test of the variability vs. specificity hypotheses in the retention of a motor skill.

The variability of practice hypothesis suggests that practicing with task variations enhances motor learning (Schmidt, 1975). However, in tasks with only a single criterion goal to be learned, the evidence that variable practice enhances retention of this criterion task compared to constant practice (i.e. practicing without task variations) is somewhat mixed. Here, we addressed this question using a registered report format. Participants (n = 80) learned a bimanual shuffleboard task where the goal was to slide a virtual puck toward a target, which required participants to release the puck at a

Efficient elastic tissue motions indicate general motor skill.

Insights into the general nature of motor skill could fundamentally change how we develop movement abilities, with implications for musculoskeletal well-being and injury. Here, we sought to identify indicators of general motor skill-those shared by experts across disciplines (e.g., squash, ballet, volleyball) during non-specialized movements (e.g., reaching for water). Identifying such general indicators of motor skill has remained elusive. Using ultrasound imaging with deep learning and optical flow analysis, we tracked elastic tissues (muscles and associated connective tissues) during a simp

Resting-state connectivity predicts visuo-motor skill learning.

Spontaneous brain activity at rest is highly organized even when the brain is not explicitly engaged in a task. Functional connectivity (FC) in the alpha frequency band (α, 8-12 Hz) during rest is associated with improved performance on various cognitive and motor tasks. In this study we explored how FC is associated with visuo-motor skill learning and offline consolidation. We tested two hypotheses by which resting-state FC might achieve its impact on behavior: preparing the brain for an upcoming task or consolidating training gains. Twenty-four healthy participants were assigned to one of tw

Neurocognitive contributions to motor skill learning: the role of working memory.

Researchers have begun to delineate the precise nature and neural correlates of the cognitive processes that contribute to motor skill learning. The authors review recent work from their laboratory designed to further understand the neurocognitive mechanisms of skill acquisition. The authors have demonstrated an important role for spatial working memory in 2 different types of motor skill learning, sensorimotor adaptation and motor sequence learning. They have shown that individual differences in spatial working memory capacity predict the rate of motor learning for sensorimotor adaptation and

Variable sequencing is actively maintained in a well learned motor skill.

Variation in sequencing of actions occurs in many natural behaviors, yet how such variation is maintained is poorly understood. We investigated maintenance of sequence variation in adult Bengalese finch song, a learned skill with rendition-to-rendition variation in the sequencing of discrete syllables (i.e., syllable "b" might transition to "c" with 70% probability and to "d" with 30% probability). We found that probabilities of transitions ordinarily remain stable but could be modified by delivering aversive noise bursts following one transition (e.g., "b→c") but not the alternative (e.g., "b

Protein synthesis inhibition blocks consolidation of an acrobatic motor skill.

To investigate whether motor skill learning depends on de novo protein synthesis, adult rats were trained in an acrobatic locomotor task (accelerating rotarod) for 7 d. Animals were systemically injected with cycloheximide (CHX, 0.5 mg/kg, i.p.) 1 h before sessions 1 and 2 or sessions 2 and 3. Control rats received vehicle injections before sessions 1, 2, and 3. Although CHX did not affect improvement of performance within session 1, between-session improvement was impaired. In overtrained animals, comparable injections of CHX had no effect on rotarod performance. These findings suggest that c

Comparison of deficits in cognitive and motor skills among children with dyslexia.

There is a growing body of evidence that children with dyslexia have problems not just in reading but in a range of skills including several unrelated to reading. In an attempt to compare the severity and incidence of deficits across these varied domains, children with dyslexia (mean ages 8, 12, and 16 years), and control groups of normally achieving children matched for IQ and for age or reading age, were tested on a range of primitive (basic) skills. The children with dyslexia performed significantly worse than the same-age controls on most tasks, and significantly worse even than the readin

The effect of resistance band exercises on motor skills in female gymnasts.

BACKGROUND: In gymnastics, where repetitive loading, sudden movements, and high-effort techniques are common, the use of adjustable elastic bands, tailored to individual differences, can safely support children's motor development. Therefore, in our study, we examined the effects of elastic resistance band (ERB) exercises on motor children in gymnasts aged 8-12 years. METHODS: The study group consisted of girl children who had been actively practicing gymnastics for 3 years. A quantitative pre- and post-test control group experimental design, a type of experimental study, was used in the stud

Attentional resource allocation in the early stages of motor skill learning.

The relationship between attentional resource allocation and early motor skill learning remains unclear. This study examined how proficiency in drone operation influences attention and which factors contribute to individual differences. Twenty-three participants with no prior drone experience performed a simulator task consisting of 12 three-minute trials, divided into three phases of four trials each. We estimated attentional resource allocation using auditory-evoked potentials (AEPs) elicited by task-irrelevant auditory probes. Performance improved significantly across phases (ps < 0.001), a

Cerebellum neuropathology and motor skill deficits in fragile X syndrome.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a leading form of inherited intellectual disability and single-gene cause of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and is characterized by core deficits in cognitive flexibility, sensory sensitivity, emotion, and social interactions. Motor deficits are a shared feature of FXS and autism. The cerebellum has emerged as one of the target brain areas affected by neurodevelopmental diseases. Alterations in the cerebellar structure, circuits, and function may be the key drivers of impaired fine and gross motor skills in FXS and fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS)

Resting-state cortical connectivity predicts motor skill acquisition.

Many studies have examined brain states in an effort to predict individual differences in the capacity for learning, with overall moderate results. The present study investigated how measures of cortical network function acquired at rest using dense-array EEG (256 leads) predict subsequent acquisition of a new motor skill. Brain activity was recorded in 17 healthy young subjects during 3min of wakeful rest prior to a single motor skill training session on a digital version of the pursuit rotor task. Practice was associated with significant gains in task performance (% time on target increased

Neural substrates of intermanual transfer of a newly acquired motor skill.

In healthy humans, the two cerebral hemispheres show functional specialization to a degree unmatched in other animals, and such strong hemispheric specialization contributes to unimanual skill acquisition [1, 2]. When most humans learn a new motor skill with one hand, this process results in performance improvements in the opposite hand as well [3-6]. Despite the obvious adaptive advantage of such intermanual transfer, there is no direct evidence identifying the neural substrates of this form of skill acquisition [7-9]. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study brain

What Motor Skills Do Children Perceive as Important? A Child-Centred Exploration Using the Motor Coordination Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Understanding children's perceptions of motor skill importance is essential for designing motivating and participatory interventions. However, little is known about which motor activities children with and without motor coordination difficulties value, particularly in culturally diverse, low-resource settings. This study explored how children perceive the importance of motor activities and how these views are shaped by cultural context, sex and motor skill level. METHODS: A culturally adapted version of the motor coordination questionnaire (MoCQ) was administered to 1438 children
