Atypical resting-state functional brain connectivity in children with developmental coordination disorder.

Children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) present lower abilities to acquire and execute coordinated motor skills. DCD is frequently associated with visual perceptual (with or without motor component) impairments. This magnetoencephalography (MEG) study compares the brain resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) and spectral power of children with and without DCD. 29 children with DCD and 28 typically developing (TD) peers underwent 2 × 5 min of resting-state MEG. Band-limited power envelope correlation and spectral power were compared between groups using a functional connec

The Association Between Motor and Social Skills in Young Autistic Children Enrolled in the Study to Explore Early Development.

Motor difficulties are common in autistic individuals and may contribute to challenges in social development. Understanding the association between motor and social skills could inform interventions to improve developmental outcomes. Using data from the Study to Explore Early Development-a large, diverse sample of rigorously characterized preschool-aged autistic children in the United States-we aimed to (a) describe the frequency of motor challenges using multiple standardized instruments; and (b) evaluate associations between motor and social skills. Children were identified from health and e

The effects of gross motor exercises on perception and praxis in children with motor coordination difficulties-randomized controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: Child psychomotor development is holistic, and pediatric rehabilitation increasingly emphasizes multidisciplinary approaches. Movement interventions can influence not only physical but also cognitive and executive functions. Midline crossing exercises may stimulate frontal-parietal networks, including the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and superior parietal cortex, involved in praxis and executive control. However, their long-term effects in children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) remain unclear. METHODS: This study examined whether midline crossing exercises imp

The effect of amblyopia on fine motor skills in children.

PURPOSE: In an investigation of the functional impact of amblyopia in children, the fine motor skills of amblyopes and age-matched control subjects were compared. The influence of visual factors that might predict any decrement in fine motor skills was also explored. METHODS: Vision and fine motor skills were tested in a group of children (n = 82; mean age, 8.2 +/- 1.7 [SD] years) with amblyopia of different causes (infantile esotropia, n = 17; acquired strabismus, n = 28; anisometropia, n = 15; mixed, n = 13; and deprivation n = 9), and age-matched control children (n = 37; age 8.3 +/- 1.3 y

A comparison of characteristics, developmental disorders and motor progression between children with and without developmental coordination disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) have difficulty in the development of motor coordination and with learning new motor skills. Studies demonstrate that children with DCD differ in terms of the nature and severity of their motor difficulties, the incidence of co occurring conditions and family background. However, little is known whether these profiles may relate to motor progression over time. The aim of this study was to describe the profiles of children with and without DCD and track motor progression over time. METHOD: The characteristics of thirty

Congenital idiopathic microcephaly in an infant: congruence of head size with developmental motor delay.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the degree of congenital, idiopathic microcephaly in a female infant was congruent with the degree of developmental motor delay she exhibited. METHODS: A 6.5-month-old female infant with idiopathic microcephaly was referred for evaluation due to parental concerns about possible cerebral palsy. She was assessed with two standardized tests: the Motor Scale of the Bayley-II Scales of Infant Development and the Harris Infant Neuromotor Test. RESULTS: The infant scored 2.3-2.6 SD (standard deviation) from the mean on both tests, a degree of developmental delay that was

Individual differences in basic numerical skills: The role of executive functions and motor skills.

The aim of the current study was to explore individual differences in basic numerical skills in a normative sample of 151 kindergarteners (mean age = 6.45 years). Whereas previous research claims a substantial link between executive functions and basic numerical skills, motor abilities have been put forward to explain variance in numerical skills. Regarding the current study, these two assumptions have been combined, revealing interesting results. Namely, executive functions (inhibition, switching, and visuospatial working memory) were found to relate to symbolic numerical skills, and motor sk

Motor impairment in children with Neurofibromatosis type 1: Effect of the comorbidity with language disorders.

BACKGROUND: There is a body of evidence demonstrating comorbidity of motor and cognitive deficit in «idiopathic» developmental disorders. These associations are also found in developmental disorders secondary to monogenic disorders as in Neurofibromatosis type 1 for which the principal complication during childhood is learning disabilities. The comparison of motor impairment between developmental disorders either idiopathic or secondary as in NF1 could help us to better understand the cause of the combined language/motor deficit in these populations. AIM: The aim of this current study was to

Effects of virtual reality training intervention on predictive motor control of children with DCD - A randomized controlled trial.

It has been hypothesised that deficits in the functions of predictive motor control and internal modeling may contribute to motor control issues of children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD). Virtual reality (VR) technologies have great potential to provide opportunity for Motor observation and motor imagery (MI) which could enhance learning and development of motor skills in children with DCD. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the benefits of a VR training intervention to improve predictive motor control functions of children with DCD. Forty female children with DCD (a

Fundamental movement skills in preschoolers: a randomized controlled trial targeting object control proficiency.

BACKGROUND: Adequately developed fundamental movement skills, particularly object control dimensions, are considered essential to learn more complex movement patterns and to increase the likelihood to successfully participate in organized and non-organized sports during later years. Thus, the present randomized controlled trial aimed at improving object control dimensions at an early state in a kindergarten setting. METHODS: Catching, throwing, kicking, rolling and stationary dribbling were assessed via gross motor development 2 (TGMD-2) testing in 41 normally developed preschoolers. On a clu

Gross Motor Function Classification System: impact and utility.

In summary, the GMFCS has had, and continues to have, a major effect on the health care of children with CP. The number of citations of the GMFCS has been increasing every year, and the classification system has had good uptake internationally and across the spectrum of health professionals for use in research design and clinical practice by providing a system for clearly communicating about children's gross motor function. The utility of diagnostic labels such as diplegia has been questioned. However, although by definition CP is a disorder of posture and movement, the movement disability is

Obstacle crossing when dual-tasking in children with and without developmental coordination disorder.

One of the essential motor skills in children’s lives is obstacle crossing. This ability is frequently employed in everyday scenarios, such as stepping over toys or miscellaneous objects on the floor. In a real-life context, the execution of this task is often influenced by concurrent cognitive demands, leading to potential cognitive-motor interference. Its effect could be more apparent in younger children or children with some motor difficulties. Thus, the aim of this study is to assess the obstacle crossing performance and post-obstacle movement under single and dual-task conditions (motor a

Functional heterogeneity of beta bursts in childhood reveals a dimensional neural signature of motor skill.

Activity in the beta frequency band appears to play a critical role in sensorimotor processing, with transient "bursts" exhibiting distinct waveform motifs that may reflect different neural computations. However, how these dynamics relate to motor development and neurodevelopmental conditions remains unclear. Here, we used EEG to investigate sensorimotor beta bursts in children with and without developmental coordination disorder (DCD). We characterized beta bursts during action execution and observation of gross and fine motor actions. Conventional spectral features and overall burst rates di

Impaired Fine Motor Skills in Developmental Dyslexia: A Bayesian Meta-Analysis of 5 Decades of Research.

PURPOSE: Individuals with developmental dyslexia frequently exhibit impairments that extend beyond reading. Numerous studies examine fine motor skill deficits in dyslexia. The current study used meta-analysis to examine whether individuals with dyslexia show differences in motor skills when compared to age-matched individuals with neurotypical development, while also exploring possible moderators of effects. METHOD: We report findings of a Bayesian hierarchical meta-analysis evaluating evidence of co-occurring motor skills deficits in dyslexia, using literature spanning 5 decades (1970-2025).

Implementation and outcomes of a quality improvement project to systematically assess the gross motor skills in school-aged children with cystic fibrosis.

INTRODUCTION: Limited data exist on the gross motor abilities of children with cystic fibrosis (CF). The objective of this research project was to implement a systematic gross motor assessment in children with CF ages 4-12 years. Secondarily, we aimed to assess demographic characteristics associated with gross motor delays. METHODS: Physical therapists aimed to evaluate at least 50% of eligible children (4-12 years) at our CF Center over 1 year using the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of motor Proficiency, second edition (BOT-2). Delays are defined by scores less than 18th percentile. Demographic a
