Rethinking Sjögren Beyond Inflammation: Considering the Role of Nerves in Driving Disease Manifestations.

Sjögren syndrome (SS) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease characterized by destruction of mucosal glands resulting in dry eye and dry mouth. Ocular presentations can be heterogenous in SS with corneal nerves abnormalities that are structural, functional, or both. Some individuals present with corneal hyposensitivity, with a phenotype of decreased tear production and epithelial disruption. Others present with corneal hypersensitivity, with a phenotype of neuropathic pain including light sensitivity and pain out of proportion to signs of tear dysfunction. A similar correlate can be foun

A Study Correlating Breathing Pattern With Different Malocclusions Among Patients Reporting At Department Of Orthodontics Ayub Medical College, Abbottabad, Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: The present era has been commanded by ample studies correlating breathing modes & risk of occurrence of malocclusion. The early intervention of altered breathing patterns can head off the long-lasting effects of already established malocclusion. The main intention of this project was to establish the possible correlation between mouth-breathing & malocclusions. METHODS: Sixty-two (62) patients undergoing orthodontic treatment were evaluated via data form (including history & clinical evaluation). SPSS software version 25.0 was used for data analysis. Patient's age, gender, type of

Density dependence of respiratory input impedance re-evaluated with a head generator minimizing upper airway shunt.

Total respiratory impedance was assessed from 4 to 30 Hz in ten normal subjects breathing air and a helium-oxygen gas mixture using two methods of applying pressure oscillations at the airway opening: 1) the conventional method where pressure is varied at the mouth: 2) the method recently developed by Peslin et al. (J Appl Physiol, 1985, 59, 1790-1795) in which pressure is varied both at the mouth and around the head to minimize transmural pressure across upper airway walls, and the corresponding artefact. When breathing air slightly lower resistances (p less than 0.05) and considerably higher

Robinow syndrome, Cockayne syndrome, and Pfeiffer syndrome: an overview of physical, neurological, and oral characteristics.

The general population expects dentists to be well-versed in the typical and atypical orofacial characteristics of all potential patients. As a result, dentists must possess a reasonable amount of knowledge concerning the physical and intraoral traits associated with developmental disorders such as those associated with Robinow syndrome, Cockayne syndrome, and Pfeiffer syndrome. None of the physical, neurological, or oral anomalies discussed in this column present insurmountable barriers to providing dental care. Dental techniques and procedures performed on patients with any of these syndrome

Atypical Hallerman-Streif syndrome: a case report.

Hallerman Streif syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by dyscephaly, dental anomalies, proportionate nazism, hypotrichosis, cutaneous atrophy limited to the head, bilateral congenital cataracts and bilateral microphthalmia. Despite the marked craniofacial characteristics and oral findings, a relative lack of reports in the dental literature has been noted. In this article, a case of a 8 year old boy with dental problems is described.

A new autosomal recessive syndrome characterized by ocular hypertelorism, distinctive face, mental retardation, brachydactyly, and genital abnormalities.

We report on three individuals of Muslim Arab origin from a village located in Northern Israel affected by an apparent autosomal recessive syndrome characterized by distinctive facial phenotype of which the most prominent feature is ocular hypertelorism. The other clinical features of the syndrome include variable degree of mental retardation, genital abnormalities dominated by short penis, and skeletal abnormalities including chest deformity (combination of upper pectus carinatum with lower pectus excavatum), and short palms with broad short fingers. Affected individuals displayed distinctive

Lip component of burning mouth syndrome.

To our knowledge there has been no previous study of factors specifically involved in the pathogenesis of patients who complain of burning sensation of the lips when the lips appear clinically normal. The complaint is akin to patients who complain of a burning sensation of the mouth when it appears clinically normal, a condition known as burning mouth syndrome. This study therefore studied precipitating factors in patients with burning mouth syndrome who reported lip involvement. Previous studies have shown that the lips are the third most common site reported as involved in patients who have

Cleft palate lateral synechia syndrome in two patients and literature review.

Cleft palate lateral synechia (CPLS) syndrome is an extremely rare congenital malformation syndrome of unknown origin, characterized by the association of cleft palate and one or more intraoral lateral synechiae (OMIM # 119550). Fewer than 20 cases have been described to date. The clinical and histological findings and results of genetic investigations for two additional cases of CPLS are presented herein, in order to better delineate this syndrome, within the context of the relevant literature. The first case presented with a U-shaped cleft palate, bilateral synechiae, and Pierre Robin sequen

[Extra-oral signs to look for in patients exhibiting oral warning signs of genetic diseases].

This article is aimed at defining guidelines for dental surgeons to manage patients with warning signs of rare genetic diseases. Anomalies of tooth development may occur as an isolated condition or in association with other symptoms in syndromes. In many cases, dental anomalies may be the first manifestations of a genetic disease. The dentist can contribute to the diagnosis, and hence to an early treatment of this syndrome. When one or more dental anomalies are found, practitioners should refer patients to a genetic clinic or a specialized reference center to diagnose genetic diseases. Therefo

Microstomia-a treatment challenge to a prosthodontist.

The branch of Prosthodontics is not only a science but also an art of handling patients who present with limitations in continuing with normal procedures. An abnormally small mouth opening is called as microstomia. The common reasons for this condition include scleroderma, orofacial malignancies, surgery, burns and TMJ ankylosis. Impressions can be made for patients with restricted mouth opening with a sectional impression tray that can be assembled and disassembled in the mouth and reassembled outside the mouth. This article describes a sectional tray system for making preliminary and seconda

Early Surgical Intervention of Congenital Syngnathia.

Congenital syngnathia is a rarely reported malformation when there is a fusion between the maxilla and the mandible. It is necessary to modify it in childhood because congenital syngnathia causes incongruity in pronunciation, diet, and esthetics during the growth process. In this case report, 1 case of syngnathia, a rare craniofacial anomaly, is presented with a review of reports. Prompt diagnosis and surgery were performed right after birth for the present case. A partial limitation point was resolved for further growth. Herein, the authors present the case of a female infant (7 d after birth

Ranulas and their mimics: CT evaluation.

The spectrum of computed tomographic (CT) findings in ten patients with pathologically proved simple and diving ranulas is reviewed. These retention cysts originate within the sublingual space from obstruction of the sublingual or minor salivary glands; when they enlarge, the cysts herniate to involve the submandibular and inferior parapharyngeal spaces (the so-called diving or plunging ranula). CT findings in 38 additional patients with a variety of cystic lesions in the floor of the mouth are contrasted with findings in cases of ranulas. The relevant anatomy is reviewed. This experience indi
