OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical characteristics and natural course of segmental multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK).
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 40 patients (43 renal units) diagnosed as having segmental MCDK between January 2002 and June 2014. Segmental MCDK was classified as typical when it was localized to the upper pole of a duplex collecting system, and otherwise as atypical. We investigated involution, associated anomalies requiring surgery, and complications of segmental MCDK.
RESULTS: Of 43 renal units, 23 were typical and 20 were atypical. During 7

INTRODUCTION: Traditionally, a voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) has been obtained in patients diagnosed with multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) because of published vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) rates between 10%-20%. However, with the diagnosis and treatment of low grade VUR undergoing significant changes, we questioned the utility of obtaining a VCUG in healthy patients with a MCDK. We reviewed our experience to see how many of the patients with documented VUR required surgical intervention.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of children diagnosed with unilateral MCDK

Multicystic dysplastic kidney is a noninherited congenital disease. Association of this disease with abnormalities of various organs is common. We, however, report a rare case of multicystic dysplastic kidney associated with congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma in an infant. Different developmental origins of the skin and the kidney can explain the scarcity of concurrent congenital skin and kidney abnormalities. Nonetheless, the development of both organs depends on mesenchyme-epithelial interactions for inductive signaling. It seems defects in the production of signaling molecules can explai

The contemporary management of children with unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney remains controversial. With the potential risks of hypertension, infection, and malignant transformation of the dysplastic kidney, conservative management necessitates long-term review with frequent ultrasound scans, urine analyses, and blood pressure checks. Operative management has traditionally used open nephrectomy with its associated patient morbidity. The introduction of laparoscopic procedures has allowed the development of techniques that reduce patient morbidity, hospital stay, and analgesia requirem

Müllerian malformations include a broad range of anomalies, resulting from the incomplete formation and/or differentiation of the Müllerian ducts. The uterus didelphys with obstructed hemivagina represents the result of a lateral nonfusion of the Müllerian ducts with asymmetric obstruction, and it is almost always associated with renal agenesis. We report a case of incidental discovery of this anomaly in a 12-year-old girl during a routine renal ultrasound. A right multicystic dysplastic kidney had been detected in the prenatal and neonatal period with no evidence of uterine anomaly. Postnatal

BACKGROUND: To evaluate if vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) contralateral to the multicystic dysplastic kidney can interfere with the compensatory renal hypertrophy.
METHODS: Twenty-seven patients (17 males, 10 females) with multicystic dysplastic kidney (MDK) (14 on the right, 13 on the left) have been treated at the Nephrology Unit of the Pediatric Department of the University of Verona from birth up to the second year of life. All these patients were diagnosed as having MDK by prenatal ultrasonography. Seven children (4 males and 3 females) had VUR (5 monolateral, 2 bilateral), diagnosed at the

We analyzed 17 cases of multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) to document the natural history of MCDK and its management. One patient was nephrectomied for respiratory failure associated with MCDK. Follow-up studies of 14 kidneys revealed that 5 kidneys (36%) did not change in size, 7 kidneys (50%) decreased in size. Two kidneys (14%) increased in size during the follow up periods and were nephrectomized. Hypertension and malignancy was not observed in our cases. Evaluations for the contralateral kidney and urinary tract system were performed in 15 patients and 5 (33%) revealed abnormalities--t

The ultrasonographic features of multicystic renal dysplasia in 15 patients (14 children, 1 adult) are described with emphasis on differentiating this condition from hydronephrosis. The most useful ultrasonographic criteria for identifying multicystic kidney include: (a) the presence of interfaces between cysts (accurate in 100% of cases); (b) nonmedial location of the largest cyst (100%); (c) absence of an identifiable renal sinus (100%); (d) multiplicity of oval or round cysts that do not communicate (93%); and (e) absence of parenchymal tissue (73%). The role and usefulness of radionuclide

We present a clinical imaging question focusing on a newborn with known prenatal history of a multicystic dysplastic kidney, and incidental ipsilateral retrovesical seminal vesical cysts, raising the diagnosis of Zinner syndrome. The diagnosis is challenging in this age group. Surgical management is generally proposed for symptomatic cases at an older age.

In children, unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) is one of the most frequently identified urinary tract abnormalities. A variety of proposed etiologies has been associated with the underlying pathogenesis of MCDK. These include genetic disturbances, teratogens, in utero infections, and urinary outflow tract obstruction. From 5-43% of the time, MCDK has associated genito-urinary anomalies, both structural and functional in nature. A review of the literature reveals that involution rates are reported to be 19-73%, compensatory hypertrophy of the contralateral kidney occurs from 24-81

Cystic dysplasia of the testis (CDT) is a rare congenital defect characterized by the formation of multiple irregular cystic spaces in the mediastinum testis. Co-existent genitourinary lesions have commonly been associated with this lesion and have included absence of the ipsilateral kidney, duplication anomalies, and cryptorchidism. We describe the first case in which multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) is associated with CDT.

PURPOSE: To compare the prevalence of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), febrile urinary tract infection (fUTI), and chronic kidney disease (CKD) among patients with multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) diagnosed by renal scintigraphy (RS) versus follow-up renal ultrasound (RUS) alone.
METHODS: This was a retrospective review of patients seen at a tertiary care center from 2010 to 2020 with MCDK diagnosed by RS or follow-up RUS. Differences in the prevalence of VUR, fUTI, and CKD by cohort were assessed using logistic regression analysis, Pearson X2 , and Fisher's Exact tests. Temporal trends in di

INTRODUCTION: Wnt-1 is capable of inducing metanephric mesenchyme to undergo tubulogenesis. A relationship between the degree of cystogenesis and reduced E-cadherin (E-cad) expression was described. Syndecan-1 (Sdc-1) has a critical role in kidney development.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten multicystic dysplastic kidneys (MCDKs) were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and immunohistochemistry was performed using Wnt-1, E-cad and Sdc-1 antibodies. Eight unaffected kidneys were used as controls.
RESULTS: Strong Wnt-1 immunostaining occurred inside cystic/tubular epithelial cells and in blastematou

OBJECTIVE: Retroperitoneoscopy has shown that US involution is not synonymous with complete regression of the dysplastic renal parenchyma in US-involuted multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK). The objective is to analyze the meaning of this results.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 16 patients (nine girls and seven boys) with unilateral MCDK that showed complete involution on ultrasonography, underwent prospectively a retroperitoneoscopic approach. US showed complete cysts involution at the mean age of 10 months (ranging from five to 22 months). All patients underwent a retroperitoneoscopic approach afte

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical course and outcome for children with multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) disease and to non-invasively predict which of these patients are at significant risk for developing urinary tract infection (UTI) and renal insufficiency. Patients were divided, on the basis of postnatal physical examination and renal ultrasonography, into simple or complex MCDK. Simple MCDK was defined as unilateral renal dysplasia without additional genitourinary (GU) abnormalities. Complex MCDK included patients with bilateral renal dysplasia or unilateral renal

BACKGROUND: Preserving kidney function is a pivotal aspect of the follow-up in patients with multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK). Kidney parenchymal abnormalities found in the contralateral kidney are commonly recognized as a poor prognosis for kidney injury. However, the clinical significance of these parenchymal features remains inadequately assessed. In this study, our team attempted to analyze the correlation between kidney parenchymal features and kidney function in patients with MCDK.
METHODS: Our study is a retrospective, case-control study of 402 patients diagnosed with MCDK between
