Mating behaviour: promiscuous mothers have healthier young.

A small marsupial has thrown new light on the question of why females typically mate with several males: promiscuous female antechinuses have many more surviving offspring because males that are successful in sperm competition also sire healthy offspring.

Stillbirth rates in singletons, twins and triplets in Sweden, 1869 to 2001.

The temporal variation in the stillbirth rates (SBR), measured as the number of stillborn per 1000 total births, among singletons, twins and triplets was studied on Swedish birth data for the period 1869 to 2001 and comparisons with data from other populations were made. Among both single and multiple births there were marked, almost monotonously decreasing trends in the stillbirth rates. Among singletons the stillbirth rate decreased from 29.5 per 1000 in the period 1869 to 1878 to 3.4 in the period 1991 to 2001. Among twins the stillbirth rate decreased from 94 per 1000 in 1869 to 1878 to a

Neonatal morbidity and mortality associated with triplet pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To compare neonatal morbidity and mortality in a large cohort of triplet pregnancies with singleton and twin neonates managed at a single tertiary center over a short time. METHODS: Records from all triplet pregnancies managed and delivered from 1992 to 1996 were reviewed for neonatal outcome data. Pregnancies delivered before 20 weeks' gestation and neonates with lethal congenital anomalies were excluded. The comparison group comprised all singleton and twin neonates managed in the same neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) during the same period. RESULTS: During the 5-year period,

Aspects of the History of Twin Research: Statistical Congresses in the 19th Century and Hellin's Law.

In the 19th century, a series of international statistical congresses began that were important for population studies, including twin research. The introduction of common rules for the national demographic registers enabled scientists to contribute to the genesis of statistical research. The congress in St. Petersburg in 1872, in particular, focused on the movements of the population, and how they should be registered. Among the facts to be recorded were in multiple births, the sex and number of children born alive or still-born, whether legitimate or illegitimate, and the age of the mother a

Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection After a Multiple Birth Pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection is an important cause of hearing loss and neurodevelopment delay. While data on vertical transmission and neonatal outcome after singleton pregnancy with cCMV are well established, only scarce reports have addressed cCMV in multiple birth pregnancies. Furthermore, no studies have yet compared the outcome after birth and long-term follow-up of children with cCMV born after a singleton versus multiple pregnancies. METHODS: Infant outcome after birth of symptomatic versus asymptomatic infection was compared for infants born with cCMV after

Trends in the prevalence and determinants of caesarean section delivery in Jordan: evidence from three demographic and health surveys, 1990--2002.

This paper explores recent levels and trends in the prevalence of Caesarean section (C-section) delivery in Jordan during the period 1990--2002 and examines the impact of socio-demographic, healthcare and spatial characteristics on C-sections there. The study used three national data sets from the Jordan Demographic and Health Survey (JDHS) program conducted in 1990, 1997 and 2002. The JDHS surveys were based on large, nationally representative samples of 16,296, 7335 and 7825 households. Rates of C-section delivery were calculated based on the last birth for each woman delivering in hospitals

Assisted reproductive technology surveillance--United States, 2000.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: In 1996, CDC initiated data collection regarding assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures performed in the United States to determine medical center-specific pregnancy success rates, as mandated by the Fertility Clinic Success Rate and Certification Act (FCSRCA) (Public Law 102-493, October 24, 1992). ART includes fertility treatments in which both eggs and sperm are handled in the laboratory (i.e., in vitro fertilization and related procedures). Patients who undergo ART treatments are more likely to deliver multiple-birth infants than women who conceive naturally.

The effects of assisted reproduction on the trends and zygosity of multiple births in England and Wales 1974-99.

Assisted reproductive techniques have led to an increase in the proportion of maternities that are multiple. Though predominantly dizygotic, they are at greater risk of monozygotic division than those spontaneously conceived. England and Wales data 1974-99 on stillbirths and livebirths were analysed for 4 periods: 1974-80 (pre-assisted reproduction; 1982-8; 1989-91 (pre-redefinition of stillbirth); 1993-9 (post-redefinition of stillbirth). For twin data, Weinberg's rule was applied to estimate the proportions that were mono- (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ). Compared with the period before assisted rep
