Multitasking Practice Eliminates Modality-Based Interference by Separating Task Representations in Sensory Brain Regions.

The debate on the neural basis of multitasking costs evolves around neural overlap between concurrently performed tasks. Recent evidence suggests that training-related reductions in representational overlap in fronto-parietal brain regions predict multitasking improvements. Cognitive theories assume that overlap of task representations may lead to unintended information exchange between tasks (i.e., crosstalk). Modality-based crosstalk was suggested as a source for multitasking costs in multisensory settings. Robust findings of increased costs for certain modality mappings may be explained by

Ferroelectric-Assisted van der Waals Charge-Dynamics Reservoir Arrays for Spatiotemporal Computing.

Physical reservoir computing offers an energy-efficient framework for spatiotemporal processing by exploiting nonlinear dynamics and fading memory. Two-dimensional semiconductors provide intrinsic interfacial charge-trapping dynamics as a potential source for such behaviors. However, purely defect-driven reservoirs suffer from limited tunability and variability. Here, we demonstrate a ferroelectric-assisted charge-trap memory (FA-CTM) that transforms inherently random interfacial charge dynamics into a highly controllable, designable physical reservoir. By introducing a ferroelectric underlaye

Multifunction E-Skin Based on MXene-PA-Hydrogel for Human Behavior Monitoring.

Hydrogels have attracted significant attention in various fields, such as smart sensing, human-machine interaction, and biomedicines, due to their excellent flexibility and versatility. However, current hydrogel electronic skins are still limited in stretchability, and their sensing functionality is often single-purpose, making it difficult to meet the requirements of complex environments and multitasking. In this study, we developed an MXene nanoplatelet and phytic acid-coreinforced poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite, denoted as MXene-PA-PVA. The strong hydrogen bonds formed by the interacti

Evolution of behavioral flexibility and the forming and breaking of habits.

The formation of habits, whereby learnt actions come to be performed automatically with repetition and practice, is a well-established focus for studies in psychology. This contrasts with evolutionarily motivated studies of learning, which typically view behavior as either learnt or fixed, to elucidate the ecological conditions where each predominates. Here, we envisage habit formation functioning to free up limited mental resources (e.g., attention), potentially improving an individual's ability to multitask. As an ecologically relevant case, we investigate exploration-exploitation in foragin

Cognitive training for improving executive function in chemotherapy-treated breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: A majority of breast cancer (BC) survivors, particularly those treated with chemotherapy, experience long-term cognitive deficits that significantly reduce quality of life. Among the cognitive domains most commonly affected include executive functions (EF), such as working memory, cognitive flexibility, multitasking, planning, and attention. Previous studies in other populations have shown that cognitive training, a behavioral method for treating cognitive deficits, can result in significant improvements in a number of cognitive skills, including EF. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this

Age-Related Alterations in Prelimbic Cortical Neuron Arc Expression Vary by Behavioral State and Cortical Layer.

Prefrontal cortical and medial temporal lobe connectivity is critical for higher cognitive functions that decline in older adults. Likewise, these cortical areas are among the first to show anatomical, functional, and biochemical alterations in advanced age. The prelimbic subregion of the prefrontal cortex and the perirhinal cortex of the medial temporal lobe are densely reciprocally connected and well-characterized as undergoing age-related neurobiological changes that correlate with behavioral impairment. Despite this fact, it remains to be determined how changes within these brain regions m

Crosstalk between estradiol and NFκB signaling pathways on placental leptin expression.

Pregnancy success requires a proper fetal maternal interaction at the establishment of implantation. Leptin has been described as a multitasking cytokine in pregnancy, particularly in the placenta, where it acts as an autocrine hormone. The expression of leptin in normal trophoblastic cells is regulated by different endogenous signals. We have previously reported that 17β-estradiol upregulates placental leptin expression through genomic and non-genomic mechanisms. To improve the knowledge of estrogen receptor mechanisms in regulating leptin gene expression, we examined transcription nuclear fa

The effect of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) on cognitive control in multitasking.

Current research in brain stimulation suggests transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) as a promising tool to modulate cognitive functions in healthy populations, such as attention, memory, and executive functions. Empirical evidence in single-task contexts, suggests that taVNS promotes holistic task processing, which strengthens the integration of multiple stimulus features in task processing. However, it is unclear how taVNS might affect performance in multitasking, where the integration of multiple stimuli leads to an overlap in stimulus response translation processes, incr

Differential associations between dual-task walking abilities and usual gait patterns in healthy older adults-Results from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging.

BACKGROUND: It is well established that facing a cognitive challenge while carrying out a motor task interferes with the motor task performance, and in general the ability of handling a dual-task declines progressively with aging. However, the reasons for this decline have not been fully elucidated. Understanding the association between usual-walking gait patterns and dual-task walking performance may provide new insights into the mechanisms that lead to gait deterioration in normal aging and its link to motor and cognitive function. RESEARCH QUESTION: Our aim was to assess usual gait paramet

Asprosin in health and disease, a new glucose sensor with central and peripheral metabolic effects.

Adipose tissue malfunction leads to altered adipokine secretion which might consequently contribute to an array of metabolic diseases spectrum including obesity, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disorders. Asprosin is a novel diabetogenic adipokine classified as a caudamin hormone protein. This adipokine is released from white adipose tissue during fasting and elicits glucogenic and orexigenic effects. Although white adipose tissue is the dominant source for this multitask adipokine, other tissues also may produce asprosin such as salivary glands, pancreatic B-cells, and cartilage. Signif

Treatment of panic disorder with agoraphobia: comparison of fluvoxamine, placebo, and psychological panic management combined with exposure and of exposure in vivo alone.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this comparative outcome study was to investigate whether the effects of exposure in vivo treatment for panic disorder with agoraphobia could be enhanced by adding interventions specifically for panic attacks before the start of exposure treatment. The additional effect of two types of treatment for panic attacks--pharmacological (fluvoxamine) and psychological (repeated hyperventilation provocations and respiratory training)--was examined. Thus, the combined treatment of panic interventions with exposure in vivo could be compared to exposure in vivo alone. METHOD: N

Virtual Dementia in the Digital Age: Neurocognitive Mechanisms, Behavioural Impact and Public Health Implications of Technology Overuse.

BACKGROUND: Digital technology has rapidly transformed how people communicate, learn, and perform professional activities. While technological advancements have improved access to information, productivity, and global connectivity, excessive reliance on digital devices has raised concerns regarding cognitive and behavioral health. Emerging evidence suggests that prolonged screen exposure, constant multitasking, and dependence on digital aids may contribute to cognitive symptoms resembling dementia, including impaired attention, memory difficulties, reduced problem-solving ability, and emotiona

Network activation and its association with perceived stress underlie performance under stressful high demand.

This fMRI study examined the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive performance under stress, with a focus on individual differences in this capacity. Using an Ecological Multitasking under Stress (EMTS) paradigm, 50 healthy males performed a dual task combining executive function and flight navigation across five levels of task demand. The task was performed twice - with or without an additional stressor unrelated to task demand, consisting of social evaluation and aversive sirens. Subjective distress and autonomic measures were recorded throughout the task, confirming the effectiveness of th
