Eating habits of east Asian people and transmission of taeniasis.

In order to understand the role of raw meat and viscera eating habits in the transmission of taeniasis in Asian countries, 1502 infected aborigines in ten mountainous districts/towns of six counties in Taiwan, 58 infected persons in two villages on Cheju Island, Korea, and 97 cases in Ambarita District on Samosir Island, North Sumatra, Indonesia were studied during the field surveys. All infected Taiwan aborigines had the habit of eating raw meat and viscera of wild and/or domestic animals. Among these aborigines, 73% ate wild boar, 66% flying squirrel, 65% wild goat, 56% muntjac, 49% wild rat

Cellular PrPCWD deposition identified at the maternal-foetal interface of chronic wasting disease-infected cervids.

Vertical transmission has been identified as a viable route of transmission in the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD), yet demonstration of trafficking mechanism(s) at the maternal-foetal interface has been limited. Conventional assays, including immunohistochemistry (IHC), Western blot and ELISA, often fail to detect low concentrations of the aberrant prion protein (PrPCWD). Contemporary in vitro amyloid conversion assays can detect low concentrations of prion seeding activity but lack the ability to localize prion seeds within specific cellular structures of tissues. In this study, we d

Naturally occurring GM2 gangliosidosis in two Muntjak deer with pathological and biochemical features of human classical Tay-Sachs disease (type B GM2 gangliosidosis).

Two juvenile sibling male Muntjak deer (Muntiacus muntjak) with histories of depression, ataxia, circling and visual deficits were studied. Cerebrospinal fluid analyses revealed vacuolated macrophages that contained long parallel needle-like intracytoplasmic inclusions. Light microscopically, nerve cell bodies throughout the brain, ganglion cells within the retina and neurons in the myenteric plexuses were variably swollen and had pale granular to finely vacuolated eosinophilic cytoplasm. Neuronal cytoplasm stained specifically with sudan black and Luxolfast blue stains. Within the brain there

Successful bioassay of blood from chronic wasting disease-affected cervids in cervid PrP transgenic Drosophila.

Chronic wasting disease is a fatal transmissible prion condition of free-ranging and farmed cervids including deer, elk, moose, muntjac and reindeer. Prionemia is a pathogenic feature of chronic wasting disease in cervids and underpins development of an ante-mortem blood test for effective disease management. To help achieve this goal, we show here that cervid PrP transgenic Drosophila can detect prion-infected blood from cervids with chronic wasting disease. We first established that cervid PrP Drosophila were highly sensitive to cervid prions since these flies were responsive to dilutions in

Coupled effects of climatic forcing and the human footprint on wildlife movement and space use in a dynamic floodplain landscape.

With climate change, terrestrial fauna in riparian floodplain ecosystems must adapt to a predicted increase in frequency and magnitude of fluvial perturbations. Seasonal migration to seek refuge from floodwaters represents a central adaptation strategy, but may entail risky navigation of anthropogenic spaces in heterogeneous landscapes. Here, we demonstrate the opportunities and constraints large-bodied mammalian herbivores face during an adaptive response of obligatory flood-driven refuge migration, across a human-dominated environment. Our study system, centred around a productive protected

ATM-dependent DNA damage-independent mitotic phosphorylation of H2AX in normally growing mammalian cells.

H2AX is a core histone H2A variant that contains an absolutely conserved serine/glutamine (SQ) motif within an extended carboxy-terminal tail. H2AX phosphorylation at the SQ motif (gamma-H2AX) has been shown to increase dramatically upon exogenously introduced DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). In this study, we use quantitative in situ approaches to investigate the spatial patterning and cell cycle dynamics of gamma-H2AX in a panel of normally growing (unirradiated) mammalian cell lines and cultures. We provide the first evidence for the existence of two distinct yet highly discernible gamma-H2

First detection of two novel malignant catarrhal fever-related gammaherpesviruses associated with sudden deaths of dorcas gazelles (Gazella Dorcas osiris).

BACKGROUND: Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a sporadic infectious disease of domesticated and non-domesticated ruminants including: cattle, sheep, bison, cervids, antelope and buffaloes, and is caused by gammaherpesviruses. Between March and May 2023, several cases of sudden death were observed in endangered species of dorcas gazelle (Gazella dorcas osiris) in zoological garden in southeastern Poland. Given the rapid course of disease, MCF was suspected. During the epizootic investigation, other ruminants that could be a source of infection and routes of spread were examined, also taking in

Requirement of species-specific interactions for the activation of human gamma delta T cells by pamidronate.

Human gammadelta T cells bearing Vgamma2Vdelta2-TCR recognize various kinds of small nonpeptide Ags, and activation of them by a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate Ag, pamidronate, requires Ag presentation by cells other than gammadelta T cells, including many human tumor cells. Present results demonstrated that tumor cell lines of nonhuman origins pulsed with pamidronate failed to activate human gammadelta T cells without exception, whereas most if not all human tumor cell lines could do so. Gammadelta T cells formed stable conjugates with pamidronate-pulsed human tumor cells and both conjuga
