Activities of Select Enzymes Involved in Insecticide Resistance in Spinosad-Resistant and -Susceptible Strains of Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae).

A Musca domestica L. strain collected from Pakistan has recently been shown to be resistant to spinosad; however, there is scarce information about the mechanism of resistance. For this reason, we explored whether a metabolic-based mechanism was responsible by analyzing the activities of the metabolic detoxifying enzymes, carboxylesterases, glutathione S-transferases, and mixed-function oxidases, in both a spinosad-selected (Spin-SEL) strain of M. domestica and a susceptible counterpart (Lab-susceptible). The results revealed that both strains were statistically at par in terms of enzyme activ

Involvement of Follicular Patency in the Ovarian Developmental Block in Virus-infected, MdSGHV, House Flies, Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae).

The Musca domestica salivary gland hypertrophy virus (MdSGHV) is known to have marked effects on the female Musca domestica L. (or common house fly) reproductive system, particularly regarding the size and functionality of the ovaries. Examination of the terminal ovarian follicles can help determine if and how MdSGHV mechanistically causes the block in ovarian development. In this study, terminal ovarian follicle lengths were measured and monitored for patency using Trypan blue dye staining. We examined the effect of MdSGHV infection on female house fly ovarian follicles and attempted to rescu

Analysis of Differentially Expressed Genes Related to Resistance in Spinosad- and Neonicotinoid-Resistant Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae) Strains.

BACKGROUND: The housefly is a global pest that has developed resistance to most insecticides applied against it. Resistance of the spinosad-resistant strain 791spin and the neonicotinoid-resistant 766b strain is believed to be due to metabolism. We investigate differentially expressed genes in these two resistant strains related to metabolism in comparison with an insecticide-susceptible reference strain. RESULTS: Genes involved in metabolism of xenobiotics were primarily up-regulated in resistant flies with some differences between resistant strains. The cyp4g98 and cyp6g4 genes proved inter

A first record of a suspected intestinal myiasis caused by Muscina stabulans (Fallén 1817) (Diptera: Muscidae) in Southern South America.

We report a case of a suspected intestinal myiasis of a child from Southeast Argentina. Diptera larvae were sampled by a physician from the nappy worn by the child and submitted for examination and identification to the Laboratorio de Artrópodos (Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata). Based on diagnosis of the anterior and posterior spiracles and mouthparts, the larvae were identified as the false stable fly Muscina stabulans (Fallén, 1817) (Diptera: Muscidae). A comparison of diagnostic characters between Argentinean and European third instars of this species is presented. Muscina stabulans

A new species of Polietina (Diptera: Muscidae) from South America, with an updated phylogeny of the genus and a review of species' identity in GenBank.

After a 20 years hiatus, we describe a new species, Polietina ponti sp. nov., from Madre de Dios, Tambopata River, Peru. Additionally, we propose Polietina nigra Couri Carvalho, 1996 as a junior synonym of Polietina prima (Couri Medeiros, 1990). A previous phylogenetic hypothesis was updated with the inclusion of the new taxon described here, which yielded a single most parsimonious tree that is similar to a previously published hypothesis (Pyrellina marsya (Pyrellina distincta (Deltotus facetus ((Polietina steini (Polietina ponti sp. nov., P. prima (P. bicolor, P. minor, P. univittata)(P. fla

Effectiveness of Naturally Occurring Substances Added to Duck Litter in Reducing Emergence and Landing of Adult Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae).

Poultry barns provide an ideal breeding environment for Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae) owing to the controlled temperatures and litter (manure plus bedding material) accumulation. Management techniques that render the litter less suitable for immature stage development, such as the addition of naturally occurring insecticidal substances, could reduce fly infestations. The effectiveness of acetic, boric, and citric acids; diatomaceous earth; and hydrated lime at restricting female landing and growth of house flies in duck litter was evaluated. Litter treated with 1.9% and 4.7% by weight

Toxicity of the essential oil from Thymus serpyllum and thymol to larvae and pupae of the housefly Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae).

The essential oil (EO) of Thymus serpyllum and thymol were evaluated for their insecticidal activity against the housefly (Musca domestica) larvae and pupae. Contact toxicity and fumigation bioassays were used. Chemical composition analysis of T. serpyllum EO by gas chromatographic mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed that thymol (41.6%), p-cymene (21.9%), and γ-terpinene (19.2%) were the major components. For larval assays, the LC50 value of T. serpyllum EO was 0.4 μl/cm2 for contact toxicity and 20.9 μl/l for fumigation toxicity. For thymol, the contact toxicity LC50 value was 0.035 μl/cm2 and

Bacterial abundance and antimicrobial resistance prevalence carried by adult house flies (Diptera: Muscidae) at Kansas dairy and beef cattle operations.

House flies (Musca domestica L.) are filth-breeding pests of urban and rural environments around the world. Frequenting microbe-rich substrates for nutritional and reproductive needs, house flies pose a risk to human and animal health through their carriage and transmission of pathogenic and antimicrobial resistant bacteria (AMR). Adult house flies were collected from Kansas beef and dairy cattle operations to assess factors influencing bacterial abundance and AMR incidence flies. Aerobic culturable bacteria and suspected coliforms (SC) were enumerated from fly homogenate cultured on nonselect

Comparative susceptibility of adult house fly (Diptera: Muscidae) and an important predator, Carcinops pumilio (Coleoptera: Histeridae), to Beauveria bassiana (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae).

House flies (Musca domestica L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) are challenging pests to control. Biological control using Carcinops pumilio beetles may help to reduce house fly populations. However, it is unknown if C. pumilio beetles are compatible with Beauveria bassiana, another house fly biological control option. Five strains of commercially available (GHA, HF23, and L90) and newly discovered (NFH10 and PSU1) strains of B. bassiana were used to test the comparative susceptibility of adult house flies and adult C. pumilio using different laboratory exposure methods. Adult house flies were susceptibl

Molecular detection and genotyping of Dientamoeba fragilis and Blastocystis sp. in housefly Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae): first report for Dientamoeba fragilis.

Dientamoeba fragilis and Blastocystis sp. are single-celled protozoan parasites of humans and animals. Although they are found in the intestines of healthy hosts, the pathogenicity of them is still unclear. To date, there is no report on D. fragilis and only two studies (without subtyping) on the occurrence of Blastocystis sp. in Musca domestica. In this study, fly samples were collected from livestock farms and their surroundings in the Kirsehir province (Central Anatolia Region) of Türkiye from May to August 2023. A total of 150 microscopically identified M. domestica samples were analyzed f

Control efficacy of Bidens pilosa L. extract against immature stages of Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae): laboratory and semi-field evaluations.

OBJECTIVES: Anti-MDA5 autoantibodies are strongly associated with interstitial lung disease (ILD) and rapidly progressive ILD (RP-ILD) in Asian patients with dermatomyositis (DM) or amyopathic DM (ADM). However, this association has not yet been established in Brazilian patients with anti-MDA5(+) DM/ADM. This study aimed to investigate the phenotypic differences between Brazilian and Japanese patients with anti-MDA5(+) DM/ADM, with a particular focus on ILD. METHODS: This was an international, tricentric, retrospective cohort study conducted in one Brazilian and two Japanese tertiary centres.

Pathogenesis associated with philornid myiasis (Diptera: Muscidae) on nestling pearly-eyed thrashers (Aves: Mimidae) in the Luquillo Rain Forest, Puerto Rico.

Pathogenesis of myiasis due to the muscid fly Philornis deceptivus in nestling pearly-eyed thrashers (Margarops fuscatus) in the Luquillo Rain Forest, Puerto Rico was investigated. Philornid larvae penetrated the host integument, underwent a period of development and growth, and established, as third instar larvae, between the dermis and the body musculature. Movement into this location plus growth and development of the fly larva appeared to be linked to the ingestion of host tissues including red blood cells, mononuclear cells which infiltrated from focal accumulations adjacent to the lesion

The Effect of the Musca domestica Salivary Gland Hypertrophy Virus on Food Consumption in Its Adult Host, the Common House Fly (Diptera: Muscidae).

The Musca domestica salivary gland hypertrophy virus (MdSGHV) substantially enlarges the house fly's salivary glands and prevents or delays ovarian development in its adult host, but the effect that MdSGHV has on the house fly's food consumption is currently unknown. Using house flies from a laboratory-reared colony, we evaluated the effect of MdSGHV infection on food consumption over a 7-d period. Both treatment (virus-infected) and control (saline-injected) flies were provided with a choice of 8% sucrose solution and 4% powdered milk solution to determine food preferences. Quantities of each

Cross-resistance, genetics, and realized heritability of resistance to fipronil in the house fly, Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae): a potential vector for disease transmission.

Houseflies, Musca domestica (L.), are ubiquitous pests that have the potential to spread a variety of pathogens to humans, poultries, and dairies. Pesticides are commonly used for the management of this pest. Fipronil is a GABA-gated chloride channel-inhibiting insecticide that has been commonly used for the management of different pests including M. domestica throughout the world. Many pests have developed resistance to this insecticide. A field-collected strain of M. domestica was selected with fipronil for continuous 11 generations to assess the cross-resistance, genetics, and realized heri
