Immediate effects of passive stretching and/or local vibration on ankle range of motion, calf muscle stiffness and passive torque: a randomized controlled cross-over trial.

PURPOSE: Vibrational stimulation was suggested sufficient to acutely enhance range of motion (ROM). However, the actual merit of superimposed vibration and underlying mechanical or sensory mechanisms of ROM increases due to local vibration are not well understood. METHODS: Using a randomized controlled cross-over trial, this study opposed two minutes of stretching + vibration (STV) to vibration (V) and stretching (ST) alone as well as a passive control (CG) in 30 healthy, recreationally active participants. Pre- and post-intervention measurements of ankle dorsiflexion ROM, ankle passive torqu

The effect of fascia gun on relaxation of exercise-induced muscle fatigue in athletes: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate recovery from exercise-induced muscle fatigue (EIMF) can negatively impact subsequent athletic performance. Although static stretching is widely used, its effectiveness remains controversial. The fascia gun, an emerging percussive massage tool, has been shown to alleviate pain, but evidence regarding its efficacy in promoting EIMF recovery compared to traditional stretching is limited. This study aims to compare the recovery effects of fascia gun percussive massage, static stretching, and passive recovery on exercise-induced muscle fatigue of the lower limbs in athletes.

DIAGNOSIS AND HABILITATION OF CONGENITAL MUSCULAR TORTICOLLIS: A NARRATIVE REVIEW.

Congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) is one of the most common congenital musculoskeletal deformities, and is defined as tilted head position with hypertonic sternocleidomastoid muscle and limited cervical spine mobility. Incidences up to 16% have been recorded, more often in male children. Clinical features are characterized by an inclined position of the head on the diseased side and a gaze directed towards the healthy side, deformities such as plagiocephaly, and various complications. In order to prevent this, it is recommended to screen all infants up to four months of age. Diagnosis is u

Non-uniform distribution of passive muscle stiffness within hamstring.

Limited information is available on whether stiffness is different within and between the constituents of the hamstring, that is, the biceps femoris long head (BFlh), semitendinosus (ST), and semimembranosus (SM). Therefore, understanding of hamstring injuries and stretching effect on hamstring stiffness is difficult. The present study primarily aimed to identify whether passive muscle stiffness differs between the BFlh, ST, and SM and between the proximal, middle, and distal sites within each muscle. Secondly, the effect of stretching exercise on the heterogeneity in passive muscle stiffness

Changes in passive tension of muscle in humans and animals after eccentric exercise.

1. This is a report of experiments on ankle extensor muscles of human subjects and a parallel series on the medial gastrocnemius of the anaesthetised cat, investigating the origin of the rise in passive tension after a period of eccentric exercise. 2. Subjects exercised their triceps surae of one leg eccentrically by walking backwards on an inclined, forward-moving treadmill. Concentric exercise required walking forwards on a backwards-moving treadmill. For all subjects the other leg acted as a control. 3. Immediately after both eccentric and concentric exercise there was a significant drop in

A Manual Therapy and Home Stretching Program in Patients With Primary Frozen Shoulder Contracture Syndrome: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Manual therapy has been demonstrated to reduce pain and improve function in patients with frozen shoulder contracture syndrome (FSCS), but no evidence exists to support one form of manual therapy over another. This case series describes both short- and long-term outcomes after a manual therapy program and home stretching exercises based on specific impairments in shoulder mobility and level of tissue irritability in patients with FSCS. CASE DESCRIPTION: Eleven patients with primary FSCS were treated with an individually tailored, multimodal manual therapy approach once weekly for

Acute effects of orofacial, neck, and shoulder relaxation exercises and chewing on soleus H-reflex and motor unit discharge patterns.

The interconnected nature of orofacial, neck musculature, and the neural system suggests that localized activities, such as teeth clenching, can influence remote spinal excitability. Although stretching exercises are known to have both local and remote effects, the specific impact of orofacial muscle stretching remains underexplored. This study investigates the effects of two interventions: 25 guided orofacial and neck stretching and mobility exercises (exercises), and chewing six chewing gums for six minutes (chewing), on the soleus H-reflex and D1 presynaptic inhibition. Ten volunteers (mean

Effects of a High-Volume 7-Week Pectoralis Muscle Stretching Training on Muscle Function and Muscle Stiffness.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that high-volume static stretching training of the lower limbs can increase the range of motion (ROM) while decreasing muscles stiffness. However, to date, there is no evidence on the effects of upper limb stretching training or its effect mechanism. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of a comprehensive 7-week static stretching training program of the pectoralis major muscle (PMa) on glenohumeral joint ROM, muscle force, and muscle stiffness. METHODS: Thirty-eight healthy, physically active participants (23 male, 15 female) were randomly assig

Chronic stretching and voluntary muscle force.

The purpose of the study was to determine whether muscle force, power, and optimal length were affected by 4 weeks of static or ballistic stretching. Twenty-nine males (age, 18-60 years) performed 4 maximal hip extensions to measure peak torque (PT), rate of torque development (RTD), work (W), and PT angle (PTA). Then, participants completed 4 weeks of static or ballistic flexibility training of the hip extensors followed by repetition of the testing protocol. After training, PT increased 5.3 +/- 19.0% in the static group (SG), 7.8 +/- 12.7% in the ballistic group (BG), and 6.1 +/- 17.9% in th

Dynamic contractility and efficiency impairments in stretch-shortening cycle are stretch-load-dependent after training-induced muscle damage.

To determine the acute task and stretch-load dependency of neuromuscular impairments after muscle-damaging exercises, we examined the magnitude of strength deficits in isometric and stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) contractions after a single bout of exercise. Ten trained men performed 90 unilateral isokinetic eccentric-concentric knee extensions on a dynamometer. Plasma creatine kinase activity, muscle soreness, maximal isometric torque, short-range stiffness, and peak torque in the eccentric phase of the SSC contraction at 3 stretch-loads (120, 150, and 180 J) were determined in the quadriceps

Adaptations of bone and bone vasculature to muscular stretch training.

The magnitude of bone formation and remodeling is linked to both the magnitude of strain placed on the bone and the perfusion of bone. It was previously reported that an increase in bone perfusion and bone density occurs in the femur of old rats with moderate aerobic exercise training. This study determined the acute and chronic effects of static muscle stretching on bone blood flow and remodeling. Old male Fischer 344 rats were randomized to either a naive or stretch-trained group. Static stretching of ankle flexor muscles was achieved by placement of a dorsiflexion splint on the left ankle f

Effects of static stretching and walking during inter-set intervals of resistance training on muscle fatigue of the quadriceps.

INTRODUCTION: Inter-set rest intervals are essential to reduce muscle fatigue and increase the total amount of volume of resistance training. Static stretching and walking may increase muscle blood flow and promote recovery during inter-set rest intervals. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 20 seconds of static stretching and walking during inter-set rest intervals of leg extension exercises on the number of repetitions to exhaustion, total amount of volume, and flexibility of the quadriceps (joint range of motion and muscle hardness) in untrained healthy ma
