BACKGROUND: Literature regarding musculocutaneous nerve injuries among the athletic population is scarce, with only several reported clinical cases among baseball and softball pitchers.
PURPOSE: To present a unique case of a musculocutaneous nerve injury to aid in clinician awareness and propose innovative rehabilitation practices that may facilitate improved patient outcomes during recovery.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 23-year-old Division 1 NCAA collegiate baseball pitcher presented with vague anterior arm pain following a pre-season game. The athlete described the pain as an "intense stretch" of

BACKGROUND: Intercostal-to-musculocutaneous nerve transfer is commonly performed in patients with brachial plexus avulsion injuries. As techniques have improved since its inception in 1963, most patients now experience some level of motor function improvement of their affected arm. While motor outcomes are well described, there is a paucity of literature describing sensory outcomes. It is thus difficult to gauge surgical success with respect to sensory function, and there is a necessity to share clear expectations with patients regarding intended or unintended postoperative sensation.

Anatomical diversity in the brachial plexus and its terminal branches in the right upper limb is described in this abstract. Variations in the brachial plexus are not unusual, but this case is notable since the musculocutaneous nerve is absent, and the median nerve has given branches to the structure in the anterior compartment as a result. In this study, we found that the musculocutaneous nerve does not innervate the anterior compartment of the arm; instead, the median nerve has taken on a broader role. In particular, the median nerve supplies the lateral aspect of the forearm, biceps brachii

PURPOSE: Patients with brachial plexus birth injury with limited intraplexal donors require the use of extraplexal donors. Concern regarding the potential for respiratory problems resulting from the harvest of intercostal nerves or the phrenic nerve suggests the need for other options. Transfer of the spinal accessory nerve (SAN) is one option for restoring elbow flexion in adult patients; however, there are few reports of the results of this transfer in brachial plexus birth injury. This study aimed to report the result of SAN transfer to the musculocutaneous nerve (MCN) in brachial plexus bi

The absence of the musculocutaneous nerve represents a failure of the nerve to depart from the median nerve during early development. During a routine dissection of a 66-year-old white female cadaver, a bilateral absence of the musculocutaneous nerve was observed in the upper limbs. Muscles of the anterior flexor compartments of the arms including biceps brachii and brachialis were supplied by branches of the median nerve. The lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm also branched from the median nerve. In a clinical case of a particularly high median nerve injury, a variation of an absent muscu

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to systematically review outcomes following intercostal nerve (ICN) transfer for restoration of elbow flexion, with a focus on identifying the optimal number of nerve transfers.
METHODS: A systematic review was performed following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to identify studies describing ICN transfers to the musculocutaneous nerve (MCN) for traumatic brachial plexus injuries in patients 16 years or older. Demographics were recorded, including age, time to operation, and level of brachial plex

AIM: The peripheral nerves of the upper extremity are exposed to acute and chronic mechanical injuries in ice hockey players, because of the high repetition of motions, high muscular forces and extreme shoulder positions. This study was performed to evaluate the effect of ice hockey playing on the axillary, musculocutaneous and radial nerves crossing the upper arm region.
METHODS: The ice hockey group consisted of 20 first-division male ice hockey players and the control group consisted of 20 non-active males. The neurophysiological study consisted of motor nerve conduction latency of the axi

PURPOSE: Vascularized nerve grafts are indicated for the repair of large nerve defects. In brachial plexus injuries, the poor prognosis for functional hand reconstruction when the lower roots are avulsed makes the ulnar nerve a potential donor for vascularized nerve grafts. We report on the results we obtained with reconstruction of elbow flexion using long pedicled ulnar nerve grafts that connected the C5 root to the musculocutaneous nerve.
METHODS: We prospectively studied 8 young adults with complete brachial plexus palsy with avulsion of the lower roots, who had surgical repair an average

INTRODUCTION: Referred sensation (RS) is described as the sensation evoked in the skin areas distinct from the site of stimulation. The study sought to identify and map RS in participants with traumatic brachial plexus injury (TBPI) through a standardised assessment.
METHODS: Conducted as an observational study, Experiment 1 involved 19 participants who underwent RS screening by stimulating 22 specific skin areas across both upper limbs, the neck and the face with a cotton swab. In Experiment 2, a comprehensive RS mapping was performed using Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments on the reinnervated

PURPOSE: Brachial plexus birth injuries (BPBI) can be life-changing for both the patient and family. While most resolve spontaneously, surgical intervention is indicated for those who fail to improve. This can be performed via nerve grafting or nerve transfer. The spinal accessory nerve is a commonly used extraplexal donor in brachial plexus surgery. In cases of BPBI, it can be transferred to the musculocutaneous nerve to restore elbow flexion. While there are short-term reports in BPBI, few, if any, long-term outcome data are available.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwe

Anatomic variations in course and motor branching pattern of the musculocutaneous nerve (MCN) with unusual communication with the median nerve were determined on the left arm of a 62-year-old formalin fixed male cadaver. The MCN did not pierce the coracobrachialis muscle. It provided 4 primary motor branches. The first branch emerged 1.5 cm inferior to the coracoid process to innervate the coracobrachialis muscle. The second branch emerged 8 cm inferior to the coracoid process to innervate the biceps brachii muscle. The third branch to brachialis muscle emerged 13.9 cm inferior to the coracoid

Traumatic brachial plexus injuries are a devastating injury that results in partial or total denervation of the muscles of the upper extremity. Treatment options that include neurolysis, nerve grafting, or neurotization (nerve transfer) has become an important procedure in the restoration of function in patients with irreparable preganglionic lesions. Restoration of elbow flexion is the primary goal in treating patients with severe brachial plexus injuries. Nerve transfers are used when spinal roots are avulsed, and proximal stumps are not available. In the present study, we analyze the result

This experimental study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of end-to-side coaptation between the musculocutaneous nerve and the phrenic nerve for brachial plexus injuries with nerve-root avulsions. In an experimental rabbit model, neurotization of the musculocutaneous nerve with the phrenic nerve was compared using end-to-end and end-to-side neurorrhaphy. Preliminary results from electrophysiologic and histologic examinations indicate that end-to-side neurotization of the musculocutaneous nerve with the phrenic nerve is an effective means for musculocutaneous nerve repair. The effectivenes

OBJECT: The use of intercostal nerves (ICNs) for the neurotization of the musculocutaneous nerve (MCN) in adult patients with traumatic brachial plexus palsy has been well described. However, its use for brachial plexus palsy in infants has rarely been reported. The authors surgically created 31 ICN-MCN communications for birth-related brachial plexus palsy and present the surgical results.
METHODS: Thirty-one neurotizations of the MCN, performed using ICNs, were conducted in 30 patients with birth-related brachial plexus palsy. In most cases other procedures were combined to reconstruct all

Intercostal nerve transfer is a well-established and effective technique for irreparable avulsed brachial plexus injuries. Between 1987 and 1989, 66 patients with brachial plexus injuries were treated by means of intercostal nerve transfer to the musculocutaneous nerve, with or without nerve grafts to obtain elbow flexion. The results were evaluated. Five clinical signs--(1) induction of chest pain by squeezing of biceps, (2) proximal biceps contraction, (3) distal biceps contraction, (4) active elbow flexion against gravity, and (5) active elbow flexion against weight--were identified and use

INTRODUCTION: A brachial plexus lesion is a devastating injury often affecting young, male adults after traffic accidents. Therefore, surgical restoration of elbow flexion is critical for establishing antigravity movement of the upper extremity. We analyzed different methods for musculocutaneous reconstruction regarding outcome.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 146 brachial plexus surgeries with musculocutaneous reconstruction performed at our department from 2013 to 2017. Demographic data, surgical method, donor and graft nerve characteristics, body mass index (BMI) as well

INTRODUCTION: Musculocutaneous nerve lesion in a throwing athlete is a rare condition. We report the case of a professional baseball pitcher with an isolated musculocutaneous nerve lesion that occurred during a pitching motion.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient had radiating pain in the upper arm and weakness of elbow flexion. Physical examination revealed flaccid paralysis of the biceps brachii muscle and paresthesia in the right lateral forearm. Musculocutaneous nerve injury was suspected. Because some signs of recovery were observed within a few days, the patient received non-operative manage

A 20-year-old right-handed fisherman experienced a severe injury in a high-energy traffic accident. These injuries included a shaft fracture of the right humerus, open comminuted fracture of the right forearm and multiple peripheral nerve palsies involving the musculocutaneous, median and radial nerves. Six months after the initial treatment, the patient was referred to our hand surgeons for further treatment. Several operations for functional reconstruction using only the ulnar nerve and ulnar nerve-innervated muscles were performed: the main procedures included a partial ulnar nerve transfer

Traumatic brachial plexus injuries can be devastating, causing partial to total denervation of the muscles of the upper extremities. Surgical reconstruction can restore motor and/or sensory function following nerve injuries. Direct nerve-to-nerve transfers can provide a closer nerve source to the target muscle, thereby enhancing the quality and rate of recovery. Restoration of elbow flexion is the primary goal for patients with brachial plexus injuries. A 4-year-old right-hand-dominant male sustained a fracture of the left scapula in a car accident. He was treated conservatively. After the acc
