Lean mass development trajectories in children and adolescents and their associations with musculoskeletal health in emerging adulthood.

This study identified longitudinal trajectories of lean mass development from childhood to young adulthood and examined their associations with bone and muscle outcomes in early adulthood. Data were obtained from 323 participants (8-23 years) in the Iowa Bone Development Study, assessed at 7 time points. Lean mass trajectories were defined using DXA-derived Z-scores for the appendicular lean mass index (aLBMI) and the appendicular lean mass to trunk fat mass ratio (aLBM/TrFM), categorized as low, average, or high. Only participants with consistent trajectories were included (n=116 for aLBMI; n

Stakeholder engagement in the development of an upper extremity outcome measure for children with rare musculoskeletal conditions.

BACKGROUND: Upper extremity (UE) involvement is prevalent in 73% of individuals with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), yet no AMC-specific outcome measure exists. When developing a measure specific to a population with a rare musculoskeletal condition, clinicians' and patients' perspectives and involvement is a crucial and necessary step. This study sought to determine the most clinically useful items for an outcome measure of UE function for children with AMC as defined by caregivers and clinicians. METHODS: To ensure the perspectives and needs of caregivers of children with AMC and

Building a Co-ordinated Musculoskeletal System: The Plasticity of the Developing Skeleton in Response to Muscle Contractions.

The skeletal musculature and the cartilage, bone and other connective tissues of the skeleton are intimately co-ordinated. The shape, size and structure of each bone in the body is sculpted through dynamic physical stimuli generated by muscle contraction, from early development, with onset of the first embryo movements, and through repair and remodelling in later life. The importance of muscle movement during development is shown by congenital abnormalities where infants that experience reduced movement in the uterus present a sequence of skeletal issues including temporary brittle bones and j

Development and use of mobile messaging for individuals with musculoskeletal pain conditions: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Previous reviews of mobile messaging for individuals with musculoskeletal pain have shown positive effects on pain and disability. However, the configuration of digital content, method of presentation and interaction, dose and frequency needed for optimal results remain unclear. Patient preferences concerning such systems are also unclear. Addressing these knowledge gaps, incorporating evidence from both experimental and observational studies, may be useful to understand the extent of the relevant literature, and to influence the design and outcomes of future messaging systems. Strain differences and effects of different stocking densities during rearing on the musculoskeletal development of pullets.

There are few published studies on the effect of stocking density (SD) of pullets, particularly between different genetic lines. The objectives of this study were to determine if strain or SD affects musculoskeletal development of pullets and determine any impact on the productivity and keel bone health of adult hens. Lohmann Selected Leghorn Lite (LSL), Dekalb White (DW), and Lohmann Brown (LB) pullets were reared at 4 different SD (247 cm2/bird, 270 cm2/bird, 299 cm2/bird, and 335 cm2/bird) in large cages furnished with elevated perches and a platform. At 16 wk of age, the keel bone, the mus

The development of a core syllabus for teaching musculoskeletal anatomy of the vertebral column and limbs to medical students.

The study of human anatomy is fundamental to medical education globally. Knowledge of musculoskeletal anatomy is essential for safe and effective clinical practice, yet this topic often receives insufficient medical program time and perceptions differ regarding which knowledge is core. Given the lack of syllabuses specific to musculoskeletal anatomy, this article aims to provide a detailed syllabus for the vertebral column and limbs relevant to medical students. A Delphi panel comprising anatomists and clinicians rated 2,260 anatomical structures and concepts as "essential," "important," "acce

Workplace ergonomic factors and the development of musculoskeletal disorders of the neck and upper limbs: a meta-analysis.

In the past 10 years there has been growing awareness among occupational health professionals worldwide of the large burden of illness associated with musculoskeletal disorders of the neck and upper limbs. It has been suggested that these disorders are associated with highly repetitive work and are due, at least in part, to ergonomic factors. This review examines the epidemiologic evidence of the relationship between workplace ergonomic factors such as repetition, force, static muscle loading, and extreme joint position and the development of muscle, tendon, and nerve entrapment disorders of t

An efficient framework for fully deformable finite element musculoskeletal spine modeling: development, sensitivity analysis, and validation.

Computational musculoskeletal models are fundamental tools for investigating spinal biomechanics. However, currently available approaches still rely on major simplifications. In particular, fully deformable finite element (FE) models capable of quantifying load-sharing across all spinal structures rarely incorporate the action of muscles. As a consequence, detailed predictions of internal loads deriving from realistic loading conditions still lack. This study integrates an active muscle architecture into a lumbar FE model using a multi-stage dimensionality reduction strategy, combining Placket

Maternal omega-3 fatty acid deficiency affects fetal thermogenic development and postnatal musculoskeletal growth in mice.

Maternal omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) deficiency can affect offspring's adiposity and metabolism by modulating lipid and glucose metabolism. However, the impact of n-3 PUFA deficiency on the development of fetal thermogenesis and its consequences is not reported. Using an n-3 PUFA deficient mice, we assessed fetal interscapular brown adipose tissue (iBAT), body fat composition, insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1), glucose transporters (GLUTs), and expression of lipid storage & metabolic proteins in the offspring. The n-3 PUFA deficiency did not change the pups' calorie intake,

Development, validation, and biomechanical evaluation of a high-fidelity finite element model of the forearm musculoskeletal system.

BACKGROUND: The human forearm, a dynamically coordinated system of bones, muscles, and connective tissues, is central to upper limb function but poses significant challenges for computational modeling due to its anatomical complexity. Existing finite element (FE) models of the forearm often oversimplify soft tissues or lack rigorous validation, limiting their clinical utility. This study aimed to develop and validate a high-fidelity 3D FE model of the forearm musculoskeletal system to replicate in vivo stress distribution under axial loading. METHODS: The model was constructed using CT and MRI

Perspective: Challenges Presented for Regeneration of Heterogeneous Musculoskeletal Tissues that Normally Develop in Unique Biomechanical Environments.

Perspective: Musculoskeletal (MSK) tissues such as articular cartilage, menisci, tendons, and ligaments are often injured throughout life as a consequence of accidents. Joints can also become compromised due to the presence of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Thus, there is a need to develop regenerative approaches to address such injuries to heterogeneous tissues and ones that occur in heterogeneous environments. Such injuries can compromise both the biomechanical integrity and functional capability of these tissues. Thus, there are several challenges to overcome in order t

Bone Erosions Detected by Ultrasound Are Prognostic for Clinical Arthritis Development in Patients With ACPA and Musculoskeletal Pain.

Anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) often precede onset of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) by years, and there is an urgent clinical need for predictors of arthritis development among such at-risk patients. This study assesses the prognostic value of ultrasound for arthritis development among ACPA-positive patients with musculoskeletal pain. We prospectively followed 82 ACPA-positive patients without clinical signs of arthritis at baseline. Ultrasound at baseline assessed synovial hypertrophy, inflammatory activity by power Doppler, and erosions in small joints of hands and feet. We applied
