Enhancement of tolerance of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) to mercury by carbon monoxide.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a hazardous gaseous molecule, whose concentration in atmosphere is recently rising. CO also is an endogenous regulator of a variety of biological processes in animals and plants. However, whether CO regulates plant adaptation to Hg-contaminated environments is unknown. In this study, we investigated the effect of CO on biological responses of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea), a plant species frequently used for heavy metal accumulation, to mercury (Hg) toxicity. Exposure of B. juncea to Hg(II) triggered production of O(2)(-) and H(2)O(2) as well as peroxides. However, s

Optimizing nitrogen fertilization in mustard through GreenSeeker-based precision agriculture: Impacts on productivity, economics, and environmental sustainability.

Excessive nitrogen (N) fertilization is a major challenge to sustainable agriculture, adversely affecting crop productivity, soil quality, and environmental health, emits a potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O), and nearly 80% of sectoral emissions linked to nutrient inputs applied during crop production. The escalating use of N fertilizers further amplifies N2O emissions, undermining soil sustainability and contributing to environmental degradation. So, the hypothesis used behind the study is increasing nitrogen use efficiency from its current level (approx. 30-40%) would reduce the need

Isolation of the mustard Napin protein Allergen Sin a 1 and characterisation of its antifungal activity.

Proteins and peptides belonging to the plant immune system can possess natural antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. Due to their broad range of activity and stability, they represent promising novel alternatives to commonly used antifungal agents to fight the emergence of resistant strains. An isolation protocol was optimised to target proteins found in plants' defence system, and it was applied to white mustard (Brassica hirta) seeds. Firstly, a ∼14 kDa protein with activity against S. cerevisiae was extracted and purified; secondly, the protein was identified as the mustard Na

Sisymbrium Officinale (the Singers' Plant) as an Ingredient: Analysis of Somatosensory Active Volatile Isothiocyanates in Model Food and Drinks.

Sisymbrium officinale (L.) Scop. (hedge mustard) is a wild common plant of the Brassicaceae family. It is known as "the singers' plant" for its traditional use in treating aphonia and vocal disability. The plant is rich in glucosinolates and isothiocyanates; the latter has been demonstrated to be a strong agonist in vitro of the Transient Receptor Potential Ankirine 1 (TRPA1) channel, which is involved in the somatosensory perception of pungency as well as in the nociception pathway of inflammatory pain. Volatile ITCs are released by the enzymatic or chemical hydrolysis of GLSs (glucosinolates

Yield reduction in Brassica napus, B. rapa, B. juncea, and Sinapis alba caused by flea beetle (Phyllotreta cruciferae (Goeze) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)) infestation in northern Idaho.

Phyllotreta cruciferae is an important insect pest of spring-planted Brassica crops, especially during the seedling stage. To determine the effect of early season P. cruciferae infestation on seed yield, 10 genotypes from each of two canola species (Brassica napus L. and Brassica rapa L.) and two mustard species (Brassica juncea L. and Sinapis alba L.) were grown in 2 yr under three different P. cruciferae treatments: (1) no insecticide control; (2) foliar applications of endosulfan; and (3) carbofuran with seed at planting plus foliar application of carbaryl. Averaged over 10 genotypes, B. ra

Herbivory Weakens the Stability of a Floral Polymorphism.

AbstractHerbivores have profound impacts on the maintenance of plant diversity. While simple optimal foraging models predict that herbivores should selectively attack common plant phenotypes, models that allow for differential plant resource acquisition can predict a preference for rarer phenotypes, leading to the destabilization of intraspecific polymorphism. We show that herbivores may play such a destabilizing role in the dimorphic Hesperis matronalis system by weakening negative frequency dependence. Across 40 patches of varying morph ratios, locally rarer H. matronalis morphs grew larger

Testing of different plants to determine influence of physico-chemical properties and contaminants content on municipal sewage sludges phytotoxicity.

This study attempts to evaluate the Phytotoxkit as a tool for measuring the toxicity of municipal sewage sludges using 10 common plants: mustard, turnip, cress, red clover, cucumber, tomato, radish, sorrel, and spinach. The results were used to determine a germination index (GI) and a median effective concentration (EC) value for each plant. The trace metal and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contaminant content and the physical-chemical properties were examined. Most sewage sludges were characterized by an unfavorable electrical conductivity value of about 5.2 mS/cm(-1). The most abunda

High levels of melatonin in the seeds of edible plants: possible function in germ tissue protection.

The seeds of plants represent the anlage of the next generation and are vital to their existence. Melatonin has been identified in the leaves and flowers of plants but not in seeds. In this study, we examined the seeds of 15 edible plants for the presence of melatonin which was extracted using cold ethanol. Melatonin was initially identified by radioimmunoassay and subsequently quantified and confirmed using high performance liquid chromatography. The physiological concentrations of melatonin in the 15 seeds studied ranged from 2 to 200 ng/g dry weight. The highest concentrations of melatonin

Inhibition of Botrytis cinerea in tomatoes by allyl-isothiocyanate release from black mustard (Brassica nigra) seeds and detection by E-nose.

The aim of this work is to delayed the postharvest development of Botrytis cinerea in tomatoes by releasing allyl-isothiocyanate (AITC) from mustard seeds at room temperature, and to discriminate the aromatic profile by using an electronic device (E-nose). Olfactory sensory analysis showed that tomatoes inoculated in the presence of AITC did not develop the microorganisms until the eighth day of storage. The highest inhibitory concentration of AITC was found in Day 3 (175.18 ppb). However, tomatoes inoculated without the presence of AITC developed a moldy aroma on the third day of storage. The

Identification, functional and interaction proteins analysis of BjuBBX25b involved in development regulation and Cd responsiveness in Brassica juncea.

B. juncea (Brassica juncea var. latipa Li) is an important leafy vegetable in China, which is suitable for both fresh consumption and processing. In this study, 71 BjuBBXs were identified and categorized into five subfamilies with segmental duplication driving family expansion. Expression profiling by RNA-seq and qRT-PCR revealed that BjuBBX25b exhibits distinct organ-specific expression patterns and was significantly up-regulated in roots under cadmium (Cd) stress, prompting further functional investigation. To elucidate its role in development and heavy metal response, three BjuBBX25b overex

Uptake, distribution, and speciation of chromium in Brassica juncea.

Brassica juncea (Indian mustard) has been widely used in phytoremediation because of its capacity to accumulate high levels of chromium (Cr) and other metals. The present study was conducted to investigate mechanism(s) involved in Cr binding and sequestration by B. juncea. The plants were grown under greenhouse conditions in field-moist or air-dried soils, amended with 100 mg kg(-1) of Cr (III) or VI). The plant concentrated Cr mainly in the roots. B. juncea removed an average of 48 and 58 microg Cr per plant from Cr (III) and Cr (VI)-treated soils, respectively. The uptake of Cr was not affec

Nitric oxide improves S-assimilation and GSH production to prevent inhibitory effects of cadmium stress on photosynthesis in mustard (Brassica juncea L.).

Nitric oxide (NO) is an important gaseous signalling molecule that participates in many developmental and physiological processes, including defense responses against toxic metals in plants. The role of NO in cadmium (Cd)-induced toxic effects on photosynthesis was examined in mustard (Brassica juncea L.) plants. Exposure of plants to 50 μM Cd significantly enhanced oxidative stress (H2O2 content and lipid peroxidation) and impaired plant growth and photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence and reduced chlorophyll content and stomatal conductance. However, the exogenous application of 100 μM so

Organisation of sensitisation of hind limb withdrawal reflexes from acute noxious stimuli in the rabbit.

Spatial aspects of central sensitisation were investigated by studying the effects on three hind limb withdrawal reflexes of an acute noxious stimulus (20 % mustard oil) applied to a number of locations around the body in decerebrate and in anaesthetised rabbits. Reflex responses to electrical stimulation of the toes were recorded from the ankle flexor tibialis anterior (TA) and the knee flexor semitendinosus (ST), whereas responses to stimulation of the heel were recorded from the ankle extensor medial gastrocnemius (MG). In non-spinalised, decerebrated, pentobarbitone-sedated preparations, f

Paradoxical Effects of Erucic Acid-A Fatty Acid With Two-Faced Implications.

Erucic acid (EA) is a monounsaturated fatty acid primarily consumed as rapeseed oil and mustard oil (MO). The consumption of EA-rich food has been reported to have adverse effects on health, particularly myocardial lipidosis and hepatic steatosis. Consequently, several countries, including the United States, European countries, New Zealand, and Australia, set limits on their daily intake. However, EA-rich MO (30%-50%) is still consumed in Asia. In contrast, limited studies on humans have reported a protective role of MO in acute myocardial infarction, ischemic heart disease, and neurologic dis

Effect of spiced food on metabolic rate.

Since the time of Lavoisier it has been known that the ingestion of food in animals and man produces an increase in oxygen consumption. This increase in metabolic rate was originally called 'specific dynamic action' (SDA) and is now widely referred to as the thermic effect (TE) of food or diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT) (Rothwell & Stock, 1981). Much of the early work on the thermic effect was confined to the type and amount of food, notably the macronutrients--proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Later, it was shown that certain minor constituents of the diet such as caffeine and associated met

Generation of protective immune response against anthrax by oral immunization with protective antigen plant-based vaccine.

In concern with frequent recurrence of anthrax in endemic areas and inadvertent use of its spores as biological weapon, the development of an effective anthrax vaccine suitable for both human and veterinary needs is highly desirable. A simple oral delivery through expression in plant system could offer promising alternative to the current methods that rely on injectable vaccines extracted from bacterial sources. In the present study, we have expressed protective antigen (PA) gene in Indian mustard by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation and in tobacco by plastid transformation. Putative trans
