UNLABELLED: We investigated the prevalence of Mycobacterium marinum lymphadenitis and describe 4 children with the disease. The database of the microbiology laboratory of a tertiary pediatric medical center was searched for all cases of nontuberculous mycobacterial lymphadenitis from 1996 to 2016. M. marinum lymphadenitis was defined as isolation of the pathogen from a lymph node or from a skin lesion with an enlarged regional lymph node. M. marinum was isolated from lymph nodes in 2 of 167 patients with nontuberculous mycobacterial lymphadenitis and from skin lesions in 2 children with skin l

Infection with Mycobacterium marinum is often difficult to diagnose. Infection with M. marinum in the upper extremity may involve the tendon sheaths, producing clinical manifestations such as tenosynovitis and symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. We report 3 cases of M. marinum infection of the hand associated with carpal tunnel syndrome during an outbreak in New York City's Chinatown. A combination of carpal tunnel release, flexor tenosynovectomy, and appropriate antibiotics yielded complete resolution of symptoms in all cases.

Cutaneous infections with Mycobacterium marinum are rare. They also are known as swimming pool or fish tank granulomas. Often the history of contact with contaminated water associated with microtrauma of the upper extremities leads to the correct diagnosis. Since chlorination of swimming pools has become standard, cases of swimming pool granuloma have become rare. Contact with fish tanks now is the most common route of infection. Positive culture of skin biopsy leads to the correct diagnosis. Moxifloxacin in combination with other antibiotics is often effective.

Fourteen strains of Mycobacterium marinum were isolated from patients with granulomatous skin lesion. All the strains were resistant to isoniazid and pyrazinamid and five resistant to rifampicin. The following antibiotics are used alone or in combination: ethambutol, rifabutin, ciprofloxacin, temafloxacin, erythromycin, clarithromycin, minocyclin. Minimal inhibitory concentrations are evaluated using agar dilution method. After what, activity of antibiotics against Mycobacterium marinum strains within human macrophages in investigated. Mycobacterium avium, a slow-growing nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM), is the main cause of life-threatening NTM infections, which are globally on the rise. Unlike Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium marinum, M. avium lacks ESX-1, a subtype of Type VII secretion system (T7SS) and a key virulence determinant. The absence of ESX-1 in M. avium raises questions about its alternative intracellular survival strategies. To investigate M. avium pathogenesis, we exploited our recently established infection model in zebrafish larvae, enabling live imaging of early host-pathogen interactions. M

BACKGROUND: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) cause opportunistic infections with increasing frequency in immunocompromised humans. Water is one of the natural sources for transmission of NTM and plays a major role in the epidemiology of NTM infections. This study evaluated the efficacy of calcium hypochlorite and ultraviolet irradiation (UV) to eliminate potentially zoonotic NTM species such as M. marinum and M. fortuitum.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bacterial suspensions containing1-4 × 105 CFU/ml were exposed to 5, 50, 100, 1,000 and 10,000 mg/L of Ca (OCl)2for 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 60 minut

This case report describes a rare instance of minimal change disease (MCD) associated with Mycobacterium marinum infection. MCD is typically idiopathic but can occasionally occur secondary to infections. The patient was a 61-year-old fisherman with a history of relapsing MCD who developed a subcutaneous abscess in the lower leg while undergoing rituximab and glucocorticoid therapy. Ziehl-Neelsen staining revealed acid-fast bacilli, and culture at 30 °C isolated M. marinum, a slow-growing nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) commonly found in aquatic environments. The infection was attributed to

The number of skin infections caused by atypical mycobacteria has increased in recent decades. They usually appear after contact with wounds and interruptions in the integrity of the skin. The present report describes a case of cutaneous infection by Mycobacterium marinum, in a young, immunocompetent patient, with a prolonged evolution, diagnosed through a skin lesion culture (from a spindle biopsy of the skin). The patient was treated with multidrug therapy, including clarithromycin, doxycycline, and rifampicin, due to the lesion extent, with satisfactory results. A brief review of the litera

BACKGROUND: Persistent cutaneous infections with Mycobacterium marinum can follow exposure of injured skin to contaminated water or fish, and can be treated with second-generation tetracyclines in addition to other antimicrobials. Due to the rarity of this infection, there are few data comparing the different treatment alternatives.
METHODS: We report a patient with culture-proven M. marinum who was treated with two different second-generation tetracyclines.
RESULTS: Our patient failed a 4-week trial of doxycycline, but responded rapidly to minocycline.
CONCLUSION: This case suggests that,

Mycobacterium marinum is a fish pathogen that has become a powerful and well-established model that has accelerated our understanding of the mechanisms of mycobacterial disease. M. marinum is a versatile surrogate for understanding the closely related human pathogen M. tuberculosis, which causes tuberculosis in humans. M. marinum has defined key mechanisms of pathogenesis, both shared with M. tuberculosis and unique to this species. In this review, we discuss the discovery of M. marinum as an occasional human pathogen, the shared aspects of pathogenesis with M. tuberculosis, and how M. marinum

A 72-year-old man presented with tenosynovitis of the left hand's extensor tendons that had been present for several months. He was initially treated with corticosteroids, first by local injection then systemically, but with no effect. When re-evaluated, the patient had developed a rash, and the symptoms had spread locally to surrounding structures. At this point, the patient added to the medical history that he had been stung by a sculpin a month before the debut of symptoms. Based on this, the patient's involved area was biopsied, and subsequent microbiology findings proved consistent with M

Misdiagnosis and delayed treatment of Mycobacterium marinum infection is common because of its diverse manifestations. This leads to inappropriate use of antimicrobials, extension of the infection from the skin to the tenosynovium, and a poor prognosis (loss of tendons and prolonged immobilisation, secondary to multiple debridements and joint contractures). Clinicians should be aware of this type of infection, especially in subjects at risk (fishermen and aquarium enthusiasts), and those with a history of trauma coupled with exposure to water or marine life. A proactive approach to obtain a bi

A retrospective survey was carried out on the epidemiological monitoring of the isolation incidence of Mycobacterium marinum in 21 laboratories, in an attempt to gain an insight into the frequency of its isolation in Spain. From 1991 to 1998, 39 cases (22 male and 17 female) of bacteriologically confirmed M. marinum infection were accumulated. The majority of the cases (35) were fish related. The clinical presentation usually suggested sporotrichosis, with the majority of skin eruptions appearing on the hand (32 cases). For treatment, minocycline was recommended as the drug of choice in 12 cas

Atypical mycobacterial infections are increasingly important in immunosuppressed patients as well as in healthy hosts. The atypical mycobacterium that most commonly affects the skin is Mycobacterium marinum. The infection should be suspected upon the presence of ulcers, nodules or chronic plaques and a history of contact with fresh or salt water. Optimal therapy is yet to be established. We report a case of Mycobacterium marinum infection in a patient receiving immunosuppressive therapy that responded favourably to treatment with doxicycline. We review the different antibiotic regimens prescri

Mycobacterium marinum is a rare cause of disseminated infection in man. The case report describes an 80-year-old woman, who had been treated with oral corticosteroids for bronchial asthma for 40 years, and in the same period had been swimming daily in swimming pools. At the first admission, the symptoms and clinical findings were interpreted as seronegative rheumatoid arthritis. After eight years of disease with recurrent infections of the skin, periarticular tissues and joints in the hands and one elbow, a biopsy specimen from an abscess showed granulomatous inflammation and acid fast bacilli

An unusual case of Mycobacterium marinum cutaneous infection is described. As a result of marked delay in the diagnosis, extensive local inflammation and destructive osteomyelitis occurred together with cutaneous dissemination in an immunocompetent host. Pathologic fractures in the infected bone necessitated amputation of the involved digit. The most striking feature of this case was the development of multiple widespread cutaneous lesions for several months following amputation of the infected digit and initiation of appropriate antimicrobial therapy. These new cutaneous lesions may reflect l

Spreading lesions clinically resembling lymphangitic sporotrichosis developed on the right arm and chest of a 60-year-old man with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Acid-fast bacilli were seen in exudates from lesions and in biopsies, and were cultured from them. The isolant grew initially as a yellowish-orange scotochromogen on Lowenstein-Jensen medium at room temperature and at 35 C., but failed to grow at 37 C. It failed to grow on 7-H-10 medium. On repeated subculturing over a 2-year period it gradually converted to a photochromogen. Histologically, there was ulceration with extensive acute an

Mycobacterium marinum is one of the most common atypical mycobacteria causing opportunistic infections in humans. It is considered to be one of the most important fish pathogens and is associated with a variety of diseases in freshwater and marine fish. In this study, a rapid detection method for M. marinum was established based on the Recombinase Polymerase Amplification (RPA) technology and the CRISPR/Cas12a trans-cut principle. By designing and screening RPA primers and crRNA, the RPA amplification system and CRISPR/Cas12a detection system were optimized, and an RPA-CRISPR/Cas12a detection
