OBJECTIVES: Mycobacterium xenopi is a nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) whose clinical diagnosis and drug susceptibility studies are frequently hampered by poor in vitro growth. Extending the culture incubation time from 42 days (common-standard) to 56 days could improve the likelihood of diagnosis and provide strains for phenotypic drug susceptibility profiling of this poorly studied but clinically relevant mycobacterium.
METHODS: Time-to-positivity of mycobacterial cultures incubated for 56 days were analysed and compared. Clinical mycobacteriosis was defined by ATS/IDSA criteria. In vitro

BACKGROUND AND SETTING: A reliable and timely clinical, radiological, and bacteriological diagnosis, and an optimal treatment of non-tubercular mycobacteriosis (including Mycobacterium xenopi disease), remain an unanswered challenge for clinicians facing immunocompromised patients, including those with HIV infection.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of our survey is to report the frequency, and the epidemiological, immunological, microbiological, clinical, and therapeutic features of all confirmed HIV-associated M. xenopi disease observed from 1993-2002, with special attention paid to eventual differences

This study was carried out to provide an overview of the frequency of various mycobacterial species isolated from AIDS patients at the University Hospital of Vienna from 1989 to 1996. Mycobacterium xenopi was found to be the second most common nontuberculous mycobacterial species (92 specimens from 30 patients) and was cultured predominantly from respiratory tract specimens. In 55% of patients, chest X-rays taken at the time of isolation demonstrated pathologic changes which could not be attributed to another cause. Therefore, according to our results, Mycobacterium xenopi should be viewed as

Empyema thoracis is a collection of pus in the pleural space associated with pleural fibrin deposition. Treatment involves systemic antimicrobials, pleural drainage, intrapleural enzymes and sometimes decortication. Our case is a 57-year-old gentleman who developed chronic mucormycosis (Cunninghamella sp.) and bacterial (Enterococcus sp.) empyema in a high-risk post-lobectomy space in the setting of a non-expandable lung following non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection. The patient did not tolerate antimicrobial therapy for progressive pulmonary NTM infection, and required lobectomy, co

OBJECTIVE AND METHOD: The aim of our survey is to investigate the epidemiology and in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility levels of 35 consecutive Mycobacterium xenopi strains responsible for confirmed disease at a University Hospital from 1993 to 2002 and to identify eventual differences in the in vitro sensitivity profile between the 17 strains isolated from patients with HIV disease and the 18 isolates cultured from non-HIV-infected individuals.
RESULTS: The involvement of lower airways accounted for 88.6% of cases; but atypical pulmonary findings, including cavitation and a prominent infla

A 57 year old man, receiving compensation for talc pneumoconiosis since 1977, was admitted to hospital for the first time in 1987, with symptoms of weight loss, fever, dyspnoea and productive cough. A chest roentgenogram showed bilateral cavitation. Two years later, Mycobacterium xenopi was found in sputum cultures. Despite specific oral antibiotherapy, the patient's health deteriorated and he died in 1990. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of an association of talcosis with a M. xenopi pneumonia. The relative timing of the two diseases suggests that talc pneumoconi

A case of lumbar epiduro-vertebral actinomycosis is related, in a 45 years old man, who was immuno depressed by an evolutive pulmonary sarcoidosis. 72 similar cases are reported in the literature. 50 of them are autopsied++. Clinically our patient looked like a Pott disease. The infection began probably in the kidney. The smear's diagnosis was actinomycosis, confirmed by the routine examination. An atypical mycobacteria, Mycobacterium xenopi was bacteriologically isolated twice in the pus. It was considered as the pathogen agent for 14 months. Actinomycosis was never identified bacteriological

Mycobacterium is a variable group of acid-fast bacillus which contains pathogenic bacteria causing tuberculosis (MTC - Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex) and leprosy (M. leprae) as well as numerous nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) causing diseases mostly in people with immunodeficiency, although some NTM strains are capable of causing illnesses in non-immunocompromised patients. This group includes for example Mycobacterium marinum, Mycobacterium ulcerans and Mycobacterium xenopi. These microorganisms are environmental mycobacteria, present in developing countries of Africa, but they may als

OBJECTIVE: Unusual clinical inflammatory syndromes associated with underlying previously unrecognized opportunistic infections are increasingly being noted shortly after starting highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). This study examined the possible relationship between such unexpected disease manifestations and in vitro parameters of microbial antigen-specific immune reactivity in patients infected with HIV-1 who had a Mycobacterium avium intracellulare or Mycobacterium xenopi infection.
DESIGN: In vitro T-cell proliferation experiments were performed after specific stimulation of a

A simple polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for rapid identification of different species of mycobacteria was developed. This PCR is based on the use of conserved sequences to amplify the genome of several mycobacterial species. The amplification patterns obtained were specific and reproducible for the species tested. In particular, we could identify Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium bovis (both produced the same pattern), Mycobacterium avium, Mycobacterium kansasii, Mycobacterium xenopi, Mycobacterium chelonae, Mycobacterium peregrinum, Mycobacterium fortuitum, Mycobacterium gor

PURPOSE: Mycobacterium xenopi and Non Tuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) are rare causes of spondylodiscitis (SD). The aim of this study was to highlight the relevance of considering these pathogens in differential diagnosis of slow growing SD, obtaining the correct diagnosis and evaluating the key points of management and therapy approach.
METHODS: A case of surgically treated Mycobacterium xenopi SD is reported. A systematic review according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines was performed. The research was conducted on MEDLINE, PubMed

The clinical characteristics, outcome and treatment of non-tuberculous mycobacterial tenosynovitis are reviewed. From lesions localized in the hand, 10 different species of non-tuberculous mycobacteria have been reported. The most common are Mycobacterium marinum and Mycobacterium kansasii. Other less frequent organisms are Mycobacterium avium complex, Mycobacterium szulgai, Mycobacterium terrae, Mycobacterium fortuitum, Mycobacterium chelonae, Mycobacterium abscessus, Mycobacterium malmoense and Mycobacterium xenopi. The infections appear to be the result of previous trauma, surgical procedur

Mycobacterioses are a constant problem in backyard poultry, as well as pet birds. To date, no evidence of direct transmission of atypical bacilli between humans has been demonstrated, but it cannot be ruled out that sick animals can be a source of infection for people in their environment. The aim of the study was to identify mycobacteria isolated from birds with diagnosed mycobacteriosis and to determine the susceptibility of mycobacterial isolates from these animals to antituberculous drugs most commonly used in the treatment of mycobacterial infections in humans. For drug susceptibility tes

The incidence of infections caused by opportunist mycobacteria in Wales during the years 1952--1978 was derived from the records of the Mycobacterium Reference Unit in Cardiff. Mycobacterium kansasil gave rise to 154 pulmonary and two nonpulmonary infections. Most of these patients were middle-aged men, approximately half of whom had pneumoconiosis or occupational exposure to dust. Organisms of the Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare-scrofulaceum complex caused pulmonary disease in 44 subjects and nonpulmonary disease in 20. Those with pulmonary infections had a mean age of 57 years, and the ma

BACKGROUND: The treatment of pulmonary disease caused by opportunist mycobacteria is controversial. It is uncertain whether in vitro sensitivity testing predicts clinical response in the way it does for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The literature suggests that the combination of rifampicin (R) and ethambutol (E) is important whereas isoniazid (H) may not be, but to date there have been no published reports of randomised controlled trials in the treatment of these conditions. The British Thoracic Society has conducted the first such trial, a randomised study of two regimens in HIV negative patie

Pulmonary infection due to opportunistic organisms and usually nonpathogenic mycobacteria may occur whenever immune defenses are weakened by external factors. These factors include neutropenia, treatment with corticosteroids or cytotoxic agents, previous antibiotic therapy, and nosocomial hazards (eg, catheters, ventilators). Nutritional deprivation is also often implicated as an important coexistent variable. An infection due to Mycobacterium xenopi (usually a nonpathogenic mycobacterium) in a patient with anorexia nervosa and no other predisposing factor for infection provides a model for di

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are numerous, and for the vast majority of them, randomized studies are lacking and data regarding optimal treatment are limited. When Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) and M. abscessus are excluded, the main NTM are M. xenopi, M. kansasii, M. malmoense, M. szulgai, and M. simiae. Treatment is long (at least 12 months after culture conversion according to recommendations by scientific societies) and difficult (at least three drugs are required, each of which have potential adverse events). Moreover, optimal treatment is unknown for the vast majority of NTM and

A normal host can be colonized by mycobacteria other than tuberculosis (MOTT), resulting in bronchoscopic isolates of no clinical significance. In the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare, Mycobacterium kansasii, and Mycobacterium xenopi have caused widely disseminated infection. To determine the usefulness of fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FB) in evaluating MOTT infection in AIDS, we reviewed MOTT cultures from 36 FBs, correlated these to clinical course, and identified MOTT isolates from cultures of all other sources in these patients. Of ten bronchoscopic

PURPOSE: To identify mycobacteria isolated from sputa of a 51-year-old female and a 72-year-old male patient with pneumoconiosis.
OBJECT AND METHOD: Mycobacteria species were isolated from sputa of a 51-year-old female. The culture was always negative in spite of positive smears before the final isolation in 1988. A 72-year-old male patient suffered from pneumoconiosis and the acid-fast bacillus was isolated by routine sputum examination in 2003. These two strains of acid-fast bacilli were identified as Mycobacterium heckeshornense by partial sequencing of 16S rRNA and rpoB and conventional m
