Mycoplasma bovis is perceived as an emerging cause of mortality in feedlot beef cattle. This study examined the lesions and infectious agents in naturally occurring M. bovis-associated bronchopneumonia and arthritis and the relationship of this condition with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infection. Standardized pathologic, immunohistochemical, and microbiologic investigations were conducted on 99 calves that died or were euthanized within 60 days after arrival in 72 feedlots. Cranioventral bronchopneumonia with multiple foci of caseous necrosis was identified in 54 of 99 calves, includin

The presence, dynamics and persistence of Mycoplasma (M.) bovis in 12 batches of grazing calves during the first month of stay at the feedlots was analyzed. Nasopharyngeal swabs were weekly collected between days 0 and 28 to detect the presence of M. bovis by culture and PCR. The animals were daily monitored for the presence of respiratory disease. The results showed the presence of different epidemiological situations at arrival, detecting the presence of uninfected or with a low prevalence groups or batches with a variable prevalence (13.3-86.7 %). Subsequently, at least one calf scored posi

Mycoplasma bovis is a highly infectious pathogenic microorganism that causes various clinical signs in cattle, including pneumonia, arthritis, and mastitis, often resulting in significant economic losses. The adhesion of M. bovis to host cells is a pivotal step in the infection process, which is a complex process involving multiple pathogenic and host proteins. Molecules involved in M. bovis adhesion and colonization are widely recognized as important virulence factors and often implicated in the infection and pathogenesis. In this study, the Mbov_0510 gene of M. bovis was cloned, and the prot

UNLABELLED: Mycoplasma bovis is an important emerging pathogen of cattle and bison, but our understanding of the genetic basis of its interactions with its host is limited. The aim of this study was to identify genes of M. bovis required for interaction and survival in association with host cells. One hundred transposon-induced mutants of the type strain PG45 were assessed for their capacity to survive and proliferate in Madin-Darby bovine kidney cell cultures. The growth of 19 mutants was completely abrogated, and 47 mutants had a prolonged doubling time compared to the parent strain. All the

Mycoplasma bovis is a fastidious pathogen of cattle causing massive economic losses in the calf and dairy industries worldwide. Since there is no approved standard method for antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) of M. bovis, the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute has requested the development of a suitable method. Therefore, this study aimed at developing a method for harmonized broth microdilution AST of M. bovis. For this, 131 M. bovis field isolates and M. bovis strain DSM 22781T were collected and macrorestriction analysis was performed to select 15 epidemiologically unrelat

Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) is one of the important pathogens for yaks. Aminoglycosides and fluoroquinolones are frequently used medications for the treatment of M. bovis. Drug-resistant strains were inevitable with the abuse of antibiotics. The resistance of M. bovis to aminoglycosides was related to the base mutations in drug target genes. Amino acid mutations at the quinolone resistance-determining region (QRDR) in gyrA, gyrB, parC, and parE conferred resistance to fluoroquinolones. In order to investigate the resistance mechanism of M. bovis from yaks in Tibet to aminoglycosides and fluoro

Mycoplasma bovis was detected in 134 (18 per cent) of 736 samples of bovine lung tissue collected from fatal pneumonia cases in the Republic of Ireland between April 1995 and December 1998. The cases occurred in 95 herds and recurred in four of them. Other respiratory pathogens were identified in 66 per cent of the M bovis-positive cases, with Pasteurella species, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis and parainfluenza 3 virus being most frequently detected. Mastitis and arthritis were less common clinical signs associated with M bovis infection; 22 cases of M bovis mastitis and five cases of M bo

Cattle from several farms in Hungary were investigated for the presence of mycoplasmal infections after the discovery of pulmonary lesions in some animals at slaughter. The pneumonic lesions, which resembled those of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) macroscopically and histologically were found to be caused by Mycoplasma bovis and not Mycoplasma mycoides subspecies mycoides (MmmSC) which is the causative agent of CBPP. No other bacterial pathogens were isolated. Negative results in complement fixation tests also showed that there was no serological evidence of CBPP. PCR tests for the d

Lung tissues from calves naturally and experimentally infected with Mycoplasma bovis were subjected to histopathological and immunohistochemical examination. The latter was carried out with a monoclonal antibody raised against M. bovis, and an avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) detection substrate system. Pulmonary lesions in naturally infected calves included exudative bronchopneumonia and extensive foci of coagulative necrosis surrounded by inflammatory cells. Experimentally infected lungs showed suppurative bronchiolitis and varying degrees of peribronchiolar mononuclear cell cuffing. M

With the common use of bulls for breeding following a period of artificial insemination in seasonally bred dairy herds, it is important to consider the potential role of the bull in transmission of Mycoplasma spp. within and between herds. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of Mycoplasma spp. in a population of bulls before and after use in Mycoplasma bovis-infected herds. The frequency of subclinical infection was also measured serologically postbreeding, and the association of Mycoplasma spp. on semen quality was evaluated. Mycoplasma bovis was isolated from 4 of 118 bulls after use i

Mycoplasma bovis is a bacterial pathogen endemic to cattle. In the early 2000s, M. bovis emerged as a cause of respiratory disease in American bison (Bison bison), causing significant morbidity and mortality. Bison herds that experience an outbreak of M. bovis are at higher risk for subsequent outbreaks, suggesting that chronic, subclinical infections can be established. Antemortem testing is therefore crucial to disease management; however, the precise sampling method to maximize detection of M. bovis in bison is unknown. We evaluated two sample types-superficial nasal swabs and deep nasophar

Mycoplasma bovis causes many health and welfare problems in cattle. Due to the absence of clear insights regarding transmission dynamics and the lack of a registered vaccine in Europe, control of an outbreak depends mainly on antimicrobial therapy. Unfortunately, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) is usually not performed, because it is time-consuming and no standard protocol or clinical breakpoints are available. Fast identification of genetic markers associated with acquired resistance may at least partly resolve former issues. Therefore, the aims of this study were to implement a fi

Mycoplasma bovis is an important bovine pathogen. Artificial insemination (AI) using contaminated semen can introduce the agent into a naïve herd. Antibiotics, most often gentamycin, tylosin, lincomycin, spectinomycin (GTLS) combination are added to semen extender to prevent transmission of pathogenic bacteria and mycoplasmas. In a commercial AI straw production system with industrial scale procedures, we analyzed the mycoplasmacidal efficacy of GTLS and ofloxacin on M. bovis ATCC and wild type strain isolated from commercial AI straws. The strains were spiked at two concentrations (106 and 10

Mycoplasma bovis is associated with bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and chronic pneumonia and polyarthritis syndrome (CPPS) in feedlot cattle. No efficacious vaccines for M. bovis exist; hence, macrolides are commonly used to control mycoplasmosis. Whole genome sequences of 126 M. bovis isolates, derived from 96 feedlot cattle over 12 production years, were determined. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) of five macrolides (gamithromycin, tildipirosin, tilmicosin, tulathromycin, tylosin) was conducted using a microbroth dilution method. The AST phenotypes were compared to the genotypes

Mycoplasma bovis causes chronic pneumonia and polyarthritis in feedlot cattle. M. bovis infects the lungs of most feedlot cattle, but the majority of calves never develop disease. Competing explanations are that some strains of M. bovis are more virulent than others or, alternatively, that calves require some other abnormality to be present in order for M. bovis to cause disease. We hypothesize that H2O2 production is an important virulence factor of M. bovis, causing oxidative injury to lung tissue. A second hypothesis is that isolates associated with caseonecrotic bronchopneumonia have an in

Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) is an insidious, wall-less primary bacterial pathogen that causes bovine pneumonia, mid-ear infection, mastitis, and arthritis. The economic losses caused by M. bovis due to culling, diminished milk production, and feed conversion are underestimated because of poor diagnosis/recognition. Treatment with common antibiotics targeting the cell wall is ineffective. Plant-derived antimicrobials (PDAs) such as food-grade trans-cinnamaldehyde (TC), eugenol (EU), and carvacrol (CAR) are inexpensive and generally regarded as safe for humans and animals yet possess strong anti

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is one of the most frequent clinical concerns in weaned calves after their arrival at the feedlot. This work reports the first local isolation of Mycoplasma bovis from feedlot calves with pneumonia and polyarthritis in Argentina. Twenty four out of 545 calves showed progressive, subacute to chronic respiratory distress, coughing, and fever. Thirty percent of the affected calves also showed lameness and swelling of elbow or carpal, and knee or tarsal joints. Five necropsies were performed and severe multifocal to coalescent pulmonary nodules, containing white-ye

Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) in cattle causes pneumonia, arthritis, otitis media, and mastitis. In addition, multiple outbreaks have been recorded in North American bison. The genomic data on Canadian M. bovis in bison and cattle to date is limited. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was used to assess the degree of genome conservation across four Canadian M. bovis strains recovered from bison and cattle. Whole-genome sequences of four M. bovis isolates (Mb1, Mb160, Mb300, Mb304) and the PG45 reference genome were utilized to identify the M. bovis genomic similarity, whole-genome single nucleotide p
