Florfenicol concentrations in ovine tear fluid following intramuscular and subcutaneous administration and comparison with the minimum inhibitory concentrations against mycoplasmal strains potentially involved in infectious keratoconjunctivitis.

OBJECTIVE: To measure florfenicol concentrations in ovine tear fluid after IM and SC administration and determine minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of florfenicol against field isolates of Mycoplasma organisms potentially involved in infectious keratoconjunctivitis. ANIMALS: 9 healthy adult Lacaune ewes. PROCEDURES: Animals received an IM and SC administration of florfenicol (20 mg/kg) in a 2-way crossover design. Samples of blood and tear fluid were collected before and for 24 hours after administration. Concentrations of florfenicol in plasma and tear fluid were measured via high-pe

Use of exfoliative cytology in the diagnosis of ovine keratoconjunctivitis.

The cells present in the conjunctival sacs of 142 healthy sheep and 87 sheep with ovine keratoconjunctivitis were examined. The most numerous cells in the healthy conjunctival sacs were epithelial cells and occasionally lymphocytes; neutrophils were rarely present. Ovine keratoconjunctivitis was characterised by a rapid onset of acute inflammation of the conjunctiva, followed by hyperaemia of the sclera and pannus, and opacity of the cornea. The most numerous cells in the acute phase were neutrophils, and the presence of plasma cells was also suspected. The use of cytological methods to aid th

Incomplete Stevens-Johnson syndrome secondary to atypical pneumonia.

Steven-Johnson syndrome is a common condition characterised by erythematous target lesions on the skin and involvement of the oral mucosa, genitals and conjunctivae. It has been documented as one of the extra-pulmonary manifestations of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection. Recently, there has been several documentation of an incomplete presentation of this syndrome - without the typical rash but with mucosal, conjunctival and genital involvement. Our case illustrates that the incomplete Steven-Johnson syndrome may present with oral mucosal and conjunctival involvement alone without skin or genital

Mycoplasma and associated bacteria isolated from ovine pink-eye.

A mycoplasma was recovered from the untreated conjunctival membranes of nine sheep affected by Pink-eye. It was neither isolated from the conjunctiva of treated animals which were affected nor from the conjunctiva of normal animals either in contact or not in contact with affected animals. Bacteria found on normal conjunctival membranes were Neisseria ovis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus epidermididis, Streptococcus and Bacillus spp. Bacteria found in clinical cases of Pink-eye were N. ovis, E. coli, a Streptococcus and Pseudomonas spp.

Keratoconjunctivitis in a hill sheep flock.

Keratoconjunctivitis affected many ewes on a large, experimental husbandry, hill farm in early and midwinter in two consecutive years. Small sporadic outbreaks occurred among ewes during the following winters and among ewes and lambs in the summer and autumn. Mycoplasma conjunctivae was isolated from conjunctival swabs taken from affected sheep. Keratoconjunctivitis had not been recognised on the farm before and the infection was probably introduced with purchased rams. Prompt treatment prevented blindness; a single application of aureomycin topical powder with an intramuscular injection of a

Mycoplasma pneumoniae-Associated Mucositis: A Diagnostic Dilemma.

Fuchs syndrome is a mucosal variant of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) without cutaneous lesions, mostly affecting the mucosa of the mouth, conjunctiva, and genitalia, that occurs in a background of Mycoplasma pneumoniae and herpes simplex infection. Treatment with antibiotics such as macrolides, tetracycline, or fluoroquinolones has been shown to limit the pulmonary disease, but it is unclear whether the incidence or severity of the mucocutaneous eruption is reduced. In the absence of cutaneous manifestations, the patient often seeks multiple specialists, including ophthalmologists, dentists,

Bilateral palpebral reduction and concurrent mycoplasmosis in a wild Agassiz's desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii).

A wild Agassiz's desert tortoise, Gopherus agassizii, with bilateral eyelid reduction and plaques of tissue covering the superior surface of both corneas was examined in the field and subsequently submitted to the University of Florida for diagnostics. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), from a swab of both corneas, was positive for Mycoplasma agassizii. Two months later, the tortoise was euthanatized and necropsied. There was increased bulbar exposure associated with dermal excoriation of periocular scales in both superior and inferior palpebra resulting in an increased palpebral fissure opening

[Mycoplasma pneumoniae-induced atypical Steven-Johnson syndrome: a diagnostic challenge].

BACKGROUND: Atypical Steven-Johnson syndrome is a rare disease that can be caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae; it is characterized by respiratory symptoms, mucosal lesions of variable severity and constitutional symptoms, in the absence of cutaneous involvement. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 35-old-man who developed mucositis in the conjunctiva, oral cavity and genitalia after the onset of respiratory symptoms. Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection was confirmed, and treatment with antibiotic and steroids was therefore started, whereby clinical manifestations subsided. CONCLUSIONS: Mycoplasma

Identification of Mycoplasma species and related organisms from ruminants in England and Wales during 2005-2019.

BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma species have been associated with economically important diseases affecting ruminants worldwide and include contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) and contagious agalactia, listed by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). The Mycoplasma Team at the Animal and Plant Health Agency provides an identification service for Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma species of veterinary importance to the United Kingdom (UK), supporting the detection of new and emerging pathogens, as well as contributing to the surveillance of endemic, and t

Detection of Mycoplasma agalactiae in Small Ruminants of Southeast Iran.

Agalactia is an infectious and contagious disease of small ruminants caused by Mycoplasma agalactiae (M. agalactiae). Although different microorganism strains contribute to this disease, M. agalactiae is known as the most prominent causative agent. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the rate of M. agalactiae involvement in contagious agalactia in the southeast region of Iran. Sampling was performed from milk, conjunctiva, ear lesions, and joints exudate of suspicious sheep and goat flocks according to the reports of Iran Veterinary Organization. The presence of Mycoplasma and its speci

Mycoplasma pneumoniae-induced pneumonia with Stevens-Johnson syndrome of acute atypical course.

We present a case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome of acute clinical course with massive occupation of the mucus membranes of the respiratory system, oral cavity, genitals and conjunctiva in a patient with pneumonia. A probable etiological factor was infection with Mycoplasma pneumoniae, however clarithromycin could be another potential inducing factor.

Swine Conjunctivitis Associated with a Novel Mycoplasma Species Closely Related to Mycoplasma hyorhinis.

Conjunctivitis in swine is a common finding, usually considered to be a secondary symptom of respiratory or viral systemic disease, or a result of irritation by dust or ammonia, or of local infections with Mycoplasma (M.) hyorhinis or chlamydia. In three unrelated swine farms in Germany with a high prevalence of conjunctivitis, a novel mycoplasma species, tentatively named Mycoplasma sp. 1654_15, was isolated from conjunctival swabs taken from affected pigs. Although 16S rRNA gene sequences shared highest nucleotide similarities with M. hyorhinis, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-ti

Feline respiratory disease: what is the role of Mycoplasma species?

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Non-hemotropic Mycoplasma species are frequently implicated in cases of respiratory disease, and also conjunctivitis, in cats. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: Mycoplasma species are considered commensal bacteria of the conjunctiva and the upper respiratory tract of cats, and hence their role as a primary pathogen is difficult to determine. These organisms certainly appear to play a significant role as a secondary pathogen in the upper airways, and there is increasing evidence that in some animals they may represent a primary infection. However, mycoplasmas have not been found in the

Varying conjunctival immune response adaptations of house finch populations to a rapidly evolving bacterial pathogen.

Pathogen adaptations during host-pathogen co-evolution can cause the host balance between immunity and immunopathology to rapidly shift. However, little is known in natural disease systems about the immunological pathways optimised through the trade-off between immunity and self-damage. The evolutionary interaction between the conjunctival bacterial infection Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) and its avian host, the house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus), can provide insights into such adaptations in immune regulation. Here we use experimental infections to reveal immune variation in conjunctival tiss

Molecular Detection and Identification of Chlamydiaceae in the Eyes of Wild and Domestic Ruminant Hosts from Northern Spain.

Infections by Chlamydiae are associated with ocular disease in humans and animals. In this study, the presence and diversity of Chlamydia spp. was assessed in diseased and healthy eyes of domestic sheep and wild ruminants that share mountain habitats in northern Spain. The presence of Chlamydia spp. was tested by real-time PCR in 1786 conjunctival swabs collected from both eyes of 893 animals from mountain habitats in northern Spain, and chlamydial species were identified in the positive samples by ArrayTube microarray methods. Chlamydial DNA was detected in 0.6% (CI95% 0.2-1.3) of the Pyrenea

Swine conjunctivitis outbreaks associated with Mycoplasma hyorhinis.

Conjunctivitis is an uncommon finding in commercial swine herds, and the etiology of the disease is rarely studied. We investigated cases of conjunctivitis in 3 wean-to-finish swine farms. Eye swabs and tissues were obtained from clinically affected pigs (8-22 wk of age), from unaffected pigs in contact with affected pen-mates, and from age-matched pigs from an unaffected herd. Real-time PCR (rtPCR) testing for Mycoplasma hyorhinis demonstrated consistent detection and high bacterial load in samples from affected herds (clinically affected animals and non-clinical pen-mates). Ct values in affe

Emergence of atypical Mycoplasma agalactiae strains harboring a new prophage and associated with an alpine wild ungulate mortality episode.

The bacterium Mycoplasma agalactiae is responsible for contagious agalactia (CA) in small domestic ruminants, a syndrome listed by the World Organization for Animal Health and responsible for severe damage to the dairy industry. Recently, we frequently isolated this pathogen from lung lesions of ibexes during a mortality episode in the French Alps. This situation was unusual in terms of host specificity and tissue tropism, raising the question of M. agalactiae emergence in wildlife. To address this issue, the ibex isolates were characterized using a combination of approaches that included anti

Characterization of unilateral conjunctival inoculation with Mycoplasma gallisepticum in house finches.

House finches in much of the continental United States experience annual epidemics of mycoplasmal conjunctivitis, caused by the bacterial pathogen Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG). Although evidence suggests that natural infections typically begin unilaterally, experimental inoculations of songbirds with MG to date have all been administered bilaterally. Furthermore, studies of free-living finches find more severe clinical signs of mycoplasmal conjunctivitis in left versus right eyes, but the mechanisms underlying this side bias remain unknown. Here, we characterized unilateral inoculation of hou
