The International journal of orofacial myology : official publication of the International Association of Orofacial Myology2003eng
This study examined the effects of orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) on speech intelligibility in adults with persistent articulation impairments. Six adults in the age range of 18-23 years were selected to receive orofacial myofunctional therapy for a period of six weeks. The results showed that five out of six clients made significant progress in oral postures and speech sound production across all three speech production tasks: single words, sentences, and spontaneous speech. Speech intelligibility increased significantly in all clients except the one diagnosed with developmental apraxi

In this article, the authors propose a specific Myofunctional Therapy Protocol for patients with altered lingual frenulum. In such cases tongue muscles are hypofunctioning and their range of motion is reduced. To compensate for this limitation, dysfunctional lingual motor patterns are established, such as the use of some muscles at the expense of others; this negatively affects the development and functions of the stomatognathic system. The Myofunctional Therapy Protocol presented in this pilot study was developed with the aim of making the muscles of the tongue, the floor of the mouth and the

INTRODUCTION: Children with malocclusion, combined with orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs), show increased risk of developing orthodontic problems and needs later in life. Speech-language therapists typically provide orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) after referral by dentists, orthodontists or ENT specialists. Interdisciplinary treatment is often advisable to prevent relapse after orthodontic treatment. OMDs and OMT are often found to be controversial topics by dentistry professionals. This study aimed to investigate self-reported knowledge and attitudes of Flemish dentists and orth

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) has yet to be confirmed in the literature. This scoping review aimed to answer the question, "What evidence exists to support the effectiveness of OMT in treating/managing orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) affecting orofacial structures' function and oral habits?"
METHODS: A librarian at the University of Alberta, Canada, developed a comprehensive search strategy and applied it to 6 databases and grey literature. The reference lists of included studies were cross-checked. Two independent reviewers screened the retri

Introduction: Snoring is a common and disturbing condition that is associated with sleep apnea in some cases. Retropalatal narrowing has been reported to be often associated with the condition, as it can lead to increased air turbulence and vibration of tissues in the throat during breathing. The activation of the tongue, soft palate, lateral wall of the pharynx, and face has been shown to keep the upper muscles open during sleep, potentially improving snoring. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effects of myofunctional therapy (MT) in patients with collapsed pharynx. Methods: A total

After a stroke, patients frequently show compromised swallowing, mastication, and speech, as well as unfavorable motion and deviation of the tongue and mandible. The dentist can improve the oral rehabilitation of a patient with deteriorated facial and oral muscles after a stroke by incorporating orofacial myofunctional therapy. This report describes a method for tongue exercises and correction of mandible deviation in an edentulous patient after a stroke by using a pearl on a wire in the anteriomedian palatal part of the maxillary denture.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder associated with significant health risks. Positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy is the primary treatment for OSA but often presents challenges for patients due to varying patient phenotypes and adherence difficulties. Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) is a potential adjunctive treatment that enhances muscle tone and coordination, which may reduce PAP pressure requirements and improve adherence. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a 3-month OMT intervention on auto-adjusting positive airway pressure (APAP) para

A system of therapy for improving nasal breathing, sucking ability, chewing, swallowing, speech and orofacial muscle function is described. The therapeutic exercises do not require conscious cooperation, so they can be used with very young or handicapped children. Novel strategies for helping children overcome damaging oral habits are detailed. Patterns of collaboration between therapist and orthodontist are described for specific malocclusions.
