The effects of elevated CO2 on shell properties and susceptibility to predation in mussels Mytilus edulis.

For many species, ocean acidification (OA) is having negative physiological consequences on their fitness and resilience to environmental change, but less is known about the ecosystem effects of these changes. Here, we assess how OA conditions predicted for 2100 affects the biological functioning of an important habitat-forming species Mytilus edulis and its susceptibility to predation by a key predator, the gastropod Nucella lapillus. Change in three physiological parameters in Mytilus were assessed: (1) shell thickness and cross-sectional surface area, (2) body volume and (3) feeding rate, a

Larval settlement and metamorphosis of the mussel Mytilus coruscus in response to monospecific bacterial biofilms.

The effects of bacterial biofilms (BFs) on larval settlement and metamorphosis of the mussel, Mytilus coruscus, were investigated in the laboratory. Of nine different isolates, Shewanella sp.1 BF induced the highest percentage of larval settlement and metamorphosis, whereas seven other isolates had a moderate inducing activity and one isolate, Pseudoalteromonas sp. 4, had a no inducing activity. The inducing activity of individual bacterial isolates was not correlated either with their phylogenetic relationship or with the surfaces from which they were isolated. Among the eight bacterial speci

New insights into the apoptotic process in mollusks: characterization of caspase genes in Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Apoptosis is an essential biological process in the development and maintenance of immune system homeostasis. Caspase proteins constitute the core of the apoptotic machinery and can be categorized as either initiators or effectors of apoptosis. Although the genes encoding caspase proteins have been described in vertebrates and in almost all invertebrate phyla, there are few reports describing the initiator and executioner caspases or the modulation of their expression by different stimuli in different apoptotic pathways in bivalves. In the present work, we characterized two initiator and four

Mytilus galloprovincialis as a bioindicator of environmental conditions: the case of the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea.

The marine mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis lives attached to the surface of hard substrata, where its exposure and relative immobility allow it to record changes in ambient seawater. It is also found along the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. Oxygen and carbon isotopes were analysed for calcite and aragonite in separate shell layers, while major, minor and trace elements in the bulk shell were analysed to evaluate environmental conditions such as the temperature of carbonate deposition, freshwater influence and locations of anthropogenic pollution. We found that, on average, aragonite is en

Effects of nanoparticles in Mytilus edulis gills and hepatopancreas - a new threat to marine life?

Every day new extraordinary properties of nanoparticles (a billionth of a meter) are discovered and worldwide millions are invested into nanotechnology and nanomaterials. Risks to marine organisms are still not fully understood and biomarkers to detect health effects are not implemented, yet. We used the filter feeding blue mussel as a model to analyse uptake and effects of nanoparticles from glass wool, a new absorbent material suggested for use in floating oil spill barriers. In both, gills and hepatopancreas we analysed uptake of nanomaterials by transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM) in uns

Cooking mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) by steam does not destroy the infectivity of Cryptosporidium parvum.

The consumption of shellfish has increased considerably worldwide, with an associated increase in foodborne illnesses. Among the bivalves, the mussels are usually cooked by steam, which constitutes a typical dish in several regions. In this article, we demonstrate that this preparation is not sufficient to destroy completely the infectivity of Cryptosporidium parvum. Oocysts recovered from experimentally contaminated mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were infectious to neonatal mice after cooking. Although, to date, no official cases of cryptosporidiosis linked to shellfish consumption have

Assortative fertilization and selection at larval stage in the mussels Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis.

Assortative mating (prezygotic isolation) and reduced hybrid fitness (postzygotic isolation) are typically invoked to explain the stability of hybrid zones. In the tension zone model, these factors work in opposition to migration, which promotes genetic homogeneity. Many marine animals migrate over long distances through a planktonic larval stage. Therefore, strong reproductive isolation is needed to maintain stable marine hybrid zones. However, surprisingly little is known about mating preferences and hybrid fitness in marine organisms. Smooth-shelled mussels (Mytilus spp.) form a well-known

Polystyrene Microplastic Exposure Adversely Affects Oocyte Quality and Ovary Health Status in Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Microplastics pose a growing threat to marine ecosystems as they can accumulate in aquatic organisms, interfering with essential physiological processes including reproduction. This study analyzed the effects of short-term exposure (48 h) to two concentrations (0.5 and 1 µg/mL) of 5 µm diameter polystyrene microplastic bead particles in female Mytilus galloprovincialis mussels, a bioindicator species of the Mediterranean Sea. Histological analyses revealed progressive oocyte degeneration and the development of hypertrophic PAS-positive mucous cells, indicative of a stress response, in a dose-d

Norovirus occurrence and tissue localization in farmed Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from Sardinia, Italy.

Norovirus (NoV) is the leading cause of foodborne gastroenteritis worldwide, with bivalve molluscs representing a major transmission vehicle. This study investigated the occurrence, temporal variability, and tissue localization of NoV in farmed Mytilus galloprovincialis from Sardinia (Italy), integrating long-term surveillance data with experimental histological analyses. A total of 592 mussel samples collected between 2015 and 2025 within official monitoring activities were analyzed by RT-qPCR according to ISO 15216. Overall, NoV RNA was detected in 15.2% of samples. Due to uneven sampling ou

Diet-driven shifts in microbiome composition and predicted metabolic functions of Mytilus coruscus larvae.

Different microalgal diets can shape the bacterial and fungal communities associated with mussel larvae. This study investigates the composition, diversity, and functional roles of bacterial and fungal communities in Mytilus coruscus planktonic larvae at the veliconcha stage, under different mixed microalgal diets. Mussel larvae were cultured under controlled conditions using two mixed diets: Isochrysis galbana + Rhinomonas reticulata (ISORHI) and I. galbana + Rhodomonas baltica (ISORHO). High-throughput sequencing revealed significant differences in the bacterial and fungal compositions betwe

Gonadal Lipid Storage in Mytilus coruscus: A Comprehensive Gene Network and Key Gene Discovery.

The hard-shelled mussel (Mytilus coruscus), a commercially vital bivalve in China, accumulates lipids predominantly in its gonads, the species' primary edible tissue. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying gonad-specific lipid storage is critical for improving reproductive efficiency and aquaculture yield. This study employs comparative transcriptomic analysis of multiple tissues (gonad, gill, mantle, foot, hemolymph) to pinpoint key regulatory genes involved in lipid deposition. Through weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), vitellogenin (VG), perilipin (PLIN), and t

Perfluorooctanoate and nano-titanium dioxide modulate male gonadal function in the mussel Mytilus coruscus.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and nano-titanium dioxide (nano-TiO₂) are widely used in industrial applications such as manufacturing and textiles, and can be released into the environment, causing toxicity to marine organisms. To study the effects of these pollutants on the gonadal development, we exposed the males of Mytilus coruscus to varying PFOA concentrations (2 and 200 μg/L) alone or combined with nano-TiO2 (0.1 mg/L, size: 25 nm) for 14 days. Co-exposure to PFOA and nano-TiO₂ resulted in a short-term (7 days) decrease in the gonadosomatic index (GSI), which recovered to baseline levels

Nanopollutants (nZnO) amplify hypoxia-induced cellular stress in a keystone marine bivalve, Mytilus edulis.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) are increasingly utilized in industrial, medical, and personal care products, particularly as the main ingredient in sunscreens, raising concerns about their environmental impact, especially in coastal ecosystems. The Baltic Sea, experiencing severe eutrophication, faces persistent hypoxia due to excessive nutrient runoff and limited water exchange. Simultaneously, coastal pollution from industrial and urban activities introduces nZnO, a highly biotoxic nanopollutant. The combined effects of hypoxia and nZnO contamination may amplify environmental stress, yet th

Microplastics and food shortage impair the byssal attachment of thick-shelled mussel Mytilus coruscus.

Microplastics (MPs) have become a ubiquitous emerging pollutant in the global marine environment. The potential toxic effects of MPs and interactions of MP pollution with other stressors such as food limitation on marine organisms' health are not yet well understood. This study investigated the effects of three-week exposure to different MPs and food shortage on the physical defense mechanisms (byssus production and properties) of Mytilus coruscus. Starvation significantly reduced the number of byssus threads, and combined exposure to MPs and food shortage suppressed the adhesion ability and c

Tissue-Specific Plasticity of DNA Methylation Across Intertidal Microhabitats in Juvenile Mussels (Mytilus californianus).

Epigenetic modifications to DNA are proposed to underpin plastic responses to environmental change, and the manner in which DNA methylation contributes to plasticity likely differs among tissues. However, few studies have investigated tissue-specific DNA methylation responses to ecologically relevant environmental stressors in natural settings. Here, we used reduced representation bisulfite sequencing to examine the influence of in situ microhabitats on DNA methylation in gill and foot of juvenile California mussels (Mytilus californianus), a foundation species with widespread dispersal and li

Mytilus edulis foot protein mimics for tailoring long-acting endothelium-mimicking anti-thrombotic surfaces.

Surfaces with enduring and superior antithrombotic properties are essential for long-term blood-contacting devices. While current surface engineering strategies integrating anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents show promise in mimicking the non-thrombogenic properties of the endothelium, their long-term effectiveness remains limited. Here, we report an easy-to-perform, dual-biomimetic surface engineering strategy for tailoring long-acting endothelium-mimicking anti-thrombotic surfaces. We first designed a Mytilus edulis foot protein-5 (Mefp-5) mimic rich in amine and clickable alkynyl groups

Methylmercury and mercury in Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from Turkish coast: Dietary exposure prediction.

The spatial distribution of total mercury (HgT) and methylmercury (MeHg) in Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) sampled at 23 different stations along Türkiye's Black Sea, the Marmara, and Aegean Sea coasts were investigated in this study. HgT and MeHg were determined using a direct mercury analyzer and ranged 1.10-130.70 μg/kg and 0.22-37.90 μg/kg dry weight, respectively. HgT and MeHg have been determined to have a substantial positive correlation (r2 = 0.94). According to average consumption and portion sizes, the weekly intake (EWI) for MeHg was less than the 1.6 μg/kg/week l

Antifouling activities of N-substituted imides: antimicrobial activities and inhibition of Mytilus edulis phenoloxidase.

In the search for novel biodegradable antifouling agents, a series of imides (N-substituted maleimides and succinimides) have been synthesized. A large majority of N-substituted maleimides and succinimides showed an antimicrobial activity toward gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi of marine origin with minimal inhibition concentrations in the range of 6 to 24 microg/ml. The imides with an alkyl substituent showed higher activities than aromatic analogues, but structure-activity relationships were not clearly established. Some compounds were powerful inhibitors of Mytilus edulis

Biochemical response of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis from Bizerta (Tunisia) to chemical pollutant exposure.

Three biomarkers (glutathione S-transferase [GST] activity, catalase [CAT] activity, and malonedialdehyde [MDA] levels) were measured in specimens of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis collected from two different stations (BC and MJ) in the lagoon of Bizerta (Tunisia). Animals were allowed to acclimate in the laboratory for some days. They were then exposed for 48 h to two concentrations of pp'DDE and two doses of mercury chloride. The acclimation period increased CAT activities and MDA levels in control mussels from both sites. GST activities were not modified during the acclimation period
