Molecular and morphological description of Ceratomyxa scophthalmi sp. nov. (Myxozoa) infecting Scophthalmus maeoticus and first report of Myxidium finnmarchicum in the Black Sea.

In the present study, 2 species of myxozoan parasites, the novel Ceratomyxa scophthalmi sp. nov. and Myxidium finnmarchicum, were documented from the gallbladder of Scophthalmus maeoticus inhabiting the Turkish Black Sea coast at Sinop. C. scophthalmi sp. nov. had mostly spherical, clavate, and fine-grained polymorphic plasmodia that ranged in diameter from 16.0 to 29.0 µm. Spores were arcuate with a convex anterior margin and concave posterior. Valves of spores were highly elongated and unequal in thickness with one valve 1.1-1.3 times thicker than the other. Valves narrowed gradually toward

Modulation of the IgM gene expression and IgM immunoreactive cell distribution by the nutritional background in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) challenged with Enteromyxum leei (Myxozoa).

The aim of the present work was to determine if a plant protein-based diet containing vegetable oils (VO) as the major lipid source could alter the distribution of IgM immunoreactive cells (IRCs) and the IgM expression pattern in the intestine and haematopoietic tissues of gilthead sea bream (GSB) (Sparus aurata) challenged with the myxosporean Enteromyxum leei. In a first trial (T1), GSB fed for 9 months either a fish oil (FO) diet or a blend of VO at 66% of replacement (66VO diet) was challenged by exposure to parasite-contaminated water effluent. All fish were periodically and non-lethally

A New Species of Sphaerospora Thélohan, 1892 (Myxozoa: Myxosporea: Bivalvulida) From the Japanese Rice Frog Fejervarya kawamurai: The First East Asian Record of Anuran-Parasitic Sphaerosporids.

Myxosporean parasites have been identified in amphibians globally; however, in Japan, no amphibian-infecting myxosporeans have been formally recorded. Thus, in this study, 20 native Japanese frog species were surveyed to clarify the diversity of myxosporeans that infect amphibians. A survey of 102 anurans representing 20 species across six families collected in Japan revealed the presence of a myxosporean belonging to the genus Sphaerospora that parasitizes the kidneys of the Japanese rice frog, Fejervarya kawamurai. The myxosporean is described herein as a new species based on its distinct mo

Outbreak of mass mortality of yearling groupers of Epinephelus (Perciformes, Serranidae) associated with the infection of a suspected new enteric Sphaerospora (Myxozoa: Myxosporea) species in South China Sea.

A suspected new enteric Sphaerospora species was believed to be directly associated with the mass mortality of yearling groupers of Epinephelus spp. in South China. The epizootic generally emerged from late September to late April of the following year. The infection prevalence and mortality rate were significantly negatively correlated with fish size. Clinical signs included anorexia, cachexia and extrusion of white pulp-like substance from anus after gentle pressure on the abdomen. Upon necropsy, severe intestinal oedema, thin and transparent intestinal wall, swollen spleen, kidney and gall

Identification of Myxobolus distalisensis n. sp. (Cnidaria: Myxozoa) infecting yellow catfish Tachysurus fulvidraco (Richardson), with a supplement description of M. voremkhai (Akhmerov, 1960) Landsberg and Lom, 1991.

With growing scale of intensive fish cultivation, the risk of parasite infection in commercial fish is increased. Precisely identifying and characterizing the parasites that infect the farmed fish is critical to understanding the dynamics of their communities. Here, two species of Myxobolus were identified in farmed yellow catfish Tachysurus fulvidraco (Richardson) in China. Myxobolus distalisensis n. sp. developed plasmodia in the gill filaments, with oval to elliptical myxospores measuring 11.3 ± 0.6 (10.4-12.6) × 8.1 ± 0.3 (7.5-8.6) × 5.5 ± 0.2 (5.2-5.8) μm.
