The human leukocyte surface Ag CD38 was recently identified as a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)(+)-glycohydrolase ecto-enzyme, degrading NAD into nicotinamide and ADP-ribose. We show here that expression of CD38 is increased in the Jurkat T cell line after treatment with agents that augment intracellular cAMP, with the permeant cAMP analogue dibutyryl-cAMP (db-cAMP), and also with PMA, which activates protein kinase C. At the end of 2022 into early 2023, the UK Health Security Agency reported unusually high levels of scarlet fever and invasive disease caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (StrepA or group A Streptococcus). CD38 is expressed in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) blasts and its prognostic significance is unknown. We investigated CD38 expression in 304 AML and 138 ALL patients. CD38 was lower in AML-M3 compared to other FAB subtypes (5% vs. 41%; P < 0.001), but was similar among ALL subtypes (56.6%; P = 0.69). We present a case of immunoblastic lymphadenopathy-like T cell lymphoma (IBL-T) who subsequently developed a massive proliferation of plasma cells. Amongst lymphocytes, expression of CD77 (globotriaosylceramide, Gb3) is exclusive to B cells of the germinal center (GC).
