Characterization of Chitosan Nanofiber Sheets for Antifungal Application.

Chitosan produced by the deacetylation of chitin is a cationic polymer with antimicrobial properties. In this study, we demonstrate the improvement of chitosan properties by nanofibrillation. Nanofiber sheets were prepared from nanofibrillated chitosan under neutral conditions. The Young's modulus and tensile strength of the chitosan NF sheets were higher than those of the chitosan sheets prepared from dissolving chitosan in acetic acid. The chitosan NF sheets showed strong mycelial growth inhibition against dermatophytes Microsporum and Trichophyton. Moreover, the chitosan NF sheets exhibited

Visualization of the interaction of water aerosol and nanofiber mesh.

Face masks play a critical role in reducing the transmission risk of COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases. Masks made with nanofibers have drawn increasingly more attention because of their higher filtration efficiency, better comfort, and lower pressure drop. However, the interactions and consequences of the nanofibers and microwater droplets remain unclear. In this work, the evolution of fibers made of polymers with different contact angles, diameters, and mesh sizes under water aerosol exposure is systematically visualized. The images show that capillarity is very strong compared with th

Resource-efficient use of industrial residue for multifunctional cacao nanofibers.

This study evaluates cacao residue from chocolate production for resource-efficient production of multifunctional nanofibers. The underlying hypothesis is that preserving non-cellulosic constituents during processing can enable resource-efficient nanofiber production while contributing unique functionalities. Cacao residue yielded 30% after bleaching, with the main components being fat and holocellulose. Fibrillation produced cacao nanofibers at an energy demand of 3.9 kWh/kg, compared with the reference, a commercial wood pulp, with 8.2 kWh/kg after the same processing time. The cacao nanofib

Photoluminescence of Aramid Nanofibers: The Benefits of Partially Disordered State.

Aramid nanofibers (ANFs) have emerged as promising polymeric building blocks for high-performance composites and porous solids due to their exceptional mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. In contrast, their optical, and specifically, luminescent properties have remained unexplored because conventional aramid polymers are weak emitters. Here we demonstrate that ANFs can exhibit strong and tunable photoluminescence. ANFs prepared in DMSO-KOH initially exist as fully deprotonated nanofiber dispersions and are nonfluorescent. Gradual protonation induces intense emission accompanied by

Structural and functional modification of electrospun nanofibers for wound healing.

Effective wound repair requires a tightly regulated balance of cellular and molecular processes; however, conventional dressings primarily provide passive protection and often fail to actively guide tissue regeneration. Electrospun nanofibers have emerged as promising biomaterials due to their nanoscale architecture that mimics the extracellular matrix and their capacity for controlled therapeutic delivery. This review examines recent strategies designed to enhance the structural stability, mechanical performance, and biological functionality of electrospun nanofibers for advanced wound healin

Confining Ti2NbC2TxMXene in carbon nanofibers to boost lithium-ion storage.

Lithium-ion batteries face challenges in achieving high energy density and long cycle life, due to limitations of conventional anode materials. MXenes, a class of two-dimensional materials, show great potential as anodes but suffer from low intrinsic capacity and severe nanosheet self-stacking. To overcome these issues, this study developed a double transition metal MXene, Ti2NbC2Tx, which offers enlarged interlayer spacing and high electrical conductivity. To further address the self-stacking issue, a Ti2NbC2Tx@CNFs (carbon nanofibers) composite was fabricated via electrospinning and subseque

Immobilization of lignin nano/microparticles on plasma-modified polymer nanofibers.

Lignin, one of the most abundant renewable phenolic biopolymers, exhibits antibacterial, antioxidant, and UV-blocking properties. Synthesizing lignin nanoparticles (NPs) opens up new applications by offering advantages over bulk lignin, providing a high specific surface area, increased reactivity, and water solubility. We discovered that lignin sizes and concentrations sufficient to elicit an antimicrobial effect in suspension against E. coli were simultaneously cytotoxic in vitro, underscoring the need for careful dose optimization in biomedical applications. Since polymer nanofibers (NFs) se

Revolutionizing Inorganic Nanofibers: Bridging Functional Elements to a Future System.

The advancement of intelligent ecosystems depends upon not only technological innovation but also a multidimensional understanding of material-world interactions. This theoretical transformation prompts increasing demands for multifunctional materials exhibiting hierarchical organization across multiple length scales. Inorganic nanofibers demonstrate potential in bridging the gap between microscale and macroscale through their three-dimensional architectures. However, their inherent brittleness, primarily resulting from inferior structural integrity poses, significantly limits their current ap

Electrospun nanofibers applications in caries lesions: prevention, treatment and regeneration.

Dental caries is a multifactorial disease primarily mediated by biofilm formation, resulting in a net loss of mineral content and degradation of organic matrix in dental hard tissues. Caries lesions of varying depths can result in demineralization of the superficial enamel, the formation of deep cavities extending into the dentin, and even pulp infection. Electrospun nanofibers (ESNs) exhibit an expansive specific surface area and a porous structure, closely mimicking the unique architecture of the natural extracellular matrix (ECM). This unique topography caters to the transport of small mole

A Biocompatible Nanofibers Modified by Plasma for Osteoblast Growth Differentiation.

This work employs nitrogen plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) to modify electrospinning polylactic acid membranes and immobilizes basic fibroblast growth factors (bFGF) by forming crosslinking bonds. The study investigates the modified membranes' surface characteristics and the stimulatory effects of crosslinked bFGF polylactic acid membranes on osteoblast and fibroblast proliferation. The PIII process occurs under low vacuum conditions and is controlled by processing time and power pulse width. The experimental results indicate that, within a 400-second N2-PIII treatment, the spun fiber

Superlong Metal-Organic Framework Micro-/Nanofibers for Selective Vitamin Absorption.

Superlong MOF-74-type micro/nanofibers, which have aspect ratios much higher than 200, are synthesized via nanoparticulate MOF-mediated recrystallization. Co-MOF-74 microfibers have high crystallinity, whereas Co-MOF-74-II nanofibers are composed of nanocrystals and amorphous phases, even though they have nanofibrous morphology. Both MOFs consist of plenty of micropores with diameters in the range of 1.0 to 2.0 nm, and they exhibit high thermal stability with a decomposition temperature higher than 260.0 °C. The MOFs are demonstrated for selective absorption of some vitamins including riboflav

Biofilm-associated diseases such as periodontitis are widespread and challenging to treat which calls for new strategies for their effective management. Probiotics represent a promising approach for targeted treatment of dysbiosis in biofilm and modulation of host immune response. In this interdisciplinary study, nanofibers with two autochthonous Bacillus strains 27.3.Z and 25.2.M were developed. The strains were isolated from the oral microbiota of healthy individuals, and their genomes were sequenced and screened for genes associated with antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activities, virule

Peptide Amphiphile Supramolecular Nanofibers Designed to Target Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a localized dilation of the aorta located in the abdomen that poses a severe risk of death when ruptured. The cause of AAA is not fully understood, but degradation of medial elastin due to elastolytic matrix metalloproteinases is a key step leading to aortic dilation. Current therapeutic interventions are limited to surgical repair to prevent catastrophic rupture. Here, we report the development of injectable supramolecular nanofibers using peptide amphiphile molecules designed to localize to AAA by targeting fragmented elastin, matrix metalloproteinase 2

Highly Effective Stroke Therapy Enabled by Genetically Engineered Viral Nanofibers.

Stroke results in the formation of a cavity in the infarcted brain tissue. Angiogenesis and neurogenesis are poor in the cavity, preventing brain-tissue regeneration for stroke therapy. To regenerate brain tissue in the cavity, filamentous phages, the human-safe nanofiber-like bacteria-specific viruses, are genetically engineered to display many copies of RGD peptide on the sidewalls. The viral nanofibers, electrostatically coated on biocompatible injectable silk protein microparticles, not only promote adhesion, proliferation, and infiltration of neural stem cells (NSCs), but also induce NSCs

Cinnamaldehyde incorporated gellan/PVA electrospun nanofibers for eradicating Candida biofilm.

Immunocompromised patients encounter fungal infections more frequently than healthy individuals. Conventional drugs associated health risk and resistance, portrayed fungal infections as a global health problem. This issue needs to be answered immediately by designing a novel anti-fungal therapeutic agent. Phytoactive molecules based therapeutics are most suitable candidate due to their low cytotoxicity and minimal side effects to the host. In this study, cinnamaldehyde (CA), an FDA approved phytoactive molecule present in cinnamon essential oil was incorporated into gellan (GA)/poly vinyl alco
