It has been known for a long time that osmosis transfers water from low to high salt concentrations, but few simulation studies have been conducted in confined spaces. This study evaluated the osmotic axial pressure at charged disk surfaces within charged cylindrical nanopores, how osmosis influences other axial pressures, and what controls it. The screening charges on the disk surfaces determine the osmotic axial pressures and critically influence the other axial pressures. External factors (electric field and ion concentrations) and internal (disk and pore wall charges) control the screening

Plasmonic nanopores combine nanofluidic confinement with electromagnetic field enhancement, enabling optical interrogation of single molecules in sub-wavelength volumes. Building on our previously developed three-dimensional dielectric nanopore platform, here we introduce 3D plasmonic nanopores as an optically active extension for single-molecule studies. We demonstrate, to our knowledge, the first implementation of DNA-PAINT within a solid-state nanopore, showing that transient hybridization events can be optically resolved within a confined plasmonic geometry. In parallel, DNA spacers of con

A nanopore engineering approach enhances acetylene (C2H2) over carbon dioxide (CO2) selectivity in ionic ultramicroporous polymers (IUPs), an understudied class of sorbents. Extending the cationic arm of a prototypical IUP nearly doubles its C2H2/CO2 selectivity from 4.9 to 8.5 (at 298 K, 1 bar), underpinned by further observations from dynamic separation experiments and bespoke computational insights.

Biological nanopore sensors are widely used for genetic sequencing as nucleic acids and other molecules translocate through them across membranes. Recent studies have shown that the transport of these polymers through nanopores is strongly influenced by macromolecular bulk crowders. By using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) molecules as crowders, experiments have shown an increase in the capture rates and translocation times of polymers through an α-hemolysin (αHL) nanopore, which provides high-throughput signals and accurate sensing. A clear molecular-level understanding of how the presence of PEG

We explored the application of two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) in single molecule DNA analysis. Two ultrathin COF nanosheets were exfoliated with pore sizes of 1.1 nm (COF-1.1) and 1.3 nm (COF-1.3) and covered closely on a quartz nanopipette with an orifice of 20 ± 5 nm. COF nanopores exhibited high size selectivity for fluorescent dyes and DNA molecules. The transport of long (calf thymus DNA) and short (DNA-80) DNA molecules through the COF nanopores was studied. Because of the strong interaction between DNA bases and the organic backbones of COFs, the DNA-80 was transp

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is the only polymer material that can replace titanium implants in the field of orthopedics. This is because the mechanical properties of PEEK are similar to those of bone, and PEEK has natural radiolucency, chemical stability, and sterilization resistance. Despite these advantages, PEEK has a disadvantage-that it is bio-inert. Therefore, many studies have attempted to change the bio-inertness of PEEK into bioactivity. Among them, a method of forming pores by acid treatment is attracting attention. In this study, an attempt was made to form pores on the surface of P

Creating alternative nanopores is crucial for advancing single-molecule methodologies. Peptide nanopores scaffolded by DNA nanostructures have emerged as a promising class of chemically synthesizable nanopores with organized geometries. However, no such nanopores have yet achieved single-molecule detection due to size limitations. Here, we overcome this limitation by employing the alamethicin (ALM) peptide, based on the hypothesis that peptides with looser helix-helix packing are advantageous for constructing large-diameter nanopores. The resulting DNA-ALM nanopores exhibited long-lived open s

Nanopores have broad applications in biosensing, energy conversion, and material separation, with their performance highly dependent on the ion distribution and transport. Here, molecular dynamics simulations were employed to systematically examine the ionic behaviors under varying surface charge densities, applied voltages, and solution concentrations. We focused on the static ion distribution without electric fields, as well as the dynamic distribution and transport of ions under electric fields. Based on the radial ion distributions, whose positional characteristics are determined solely by

Understanding the liquid infiltration subjected to external loadings with various rates is of critical importance to the design of nanofluidics-based anti-impact systems. In the present work, nonequilibrium molecular dynamics were used to probe water intrusion into hydrophobic nanopores under varied loading rates. A comprehensive parametric study reveals that the infiltration time depends on the nanopore rate and size, and a power-law scaling can be established, which reveals distinct quasi-equilibrium and kinetically limited regimes. The effective infiltration ratio, which reflects the comple

Environmental humidity power generation technology is an important strategy to reduce the use of fossil fuels and solve the energy crisis. However, it remains a challenge to maintain a water adsorption gradient for the long-term output of continuous electrical energy when environmental humidity fluctuates. Herein, porous polyoxometalate (POM) nanomaterial [CuII(2,2'-bipy)(H2O)2Cl] n [CuII-(2,2'-bipy)(H2O)2Al(OH)6Mo6O18] n (Cu-CuAlMo6) was used to assemble thin-film devices, which achieved continuous power generation in fluctuating humidity. The device generated stable electrical output (0.203

Selective removal of Mg2+ from seawater is essential to mitigate reverse osmosis membrane scaling yet remains difficult because abundant and mobile Na+ competes for uptake. Low-cost layered electrochemical materials such as vanadium oxide (V2O5) offer tunable confinement for ion insertion, making them attractive candidates for targeting Mg2+ in saline feeds. Here, we parametrize an intermolecular potential model for V2O5 and employ molecular dynamics simulations to examine Na+/Mg2+ intercalation from bulk brine solutions into slit-shaped V2O5 pores as a function of brine composition, pore size

Fabrication of pores at the atomic scale remains a significant challenge in modern nanotechnology, hindering the study of ion transport and molecular dynamics in confined spaces. Here, we introduce a chemically controllable break-membrane approach that enables the repeated formation and closure of nanoscale pores in SiNx membranes through manipulating the in-pore electrochemical reaction conditions by transmembrane voltage. Ionic current measurements reveal distinct conductance features that are consistent with ion dehydration and transport through highly confined channels approaching sub-nano

Nanoporous materials, unique materials with characteristic nanoscale effects in a macroscopic format, have been highlighted for their solid-state hydrogen storage capabilities. However, an atomic-level description devoted to understand nanoscale size effects is still missing. In the present paper, molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations were performed to investigate the hydrogen absorption and mechanical behavior under tensile stress of nanoporous palladium (np Pd). The results reveal that np Pd with ligament sizes on the nanometer scale exhibits a hydrogen absorption isotherm similar t

UNLABELLED: Nanopore direct RNA sequencing (DRS) enables the capture and full-length sequencing of native RNAs, without recoding or amplification bias. Resulting data sets may be interrogated to define the identity and location of chemically modified ribonucleotides, as well as the length of poly(A) tails, on individual RNA molecules. The success of these analyses is highly dependent on the provision of high-resolution transcriptome annotations in combination with workflows that minimize misalignments and other analysis artifacts. Existing software solutions for generating high-resolution tran

Influenza epidemics and pandemics have significant impacts on economies, morbidity and mortality worldwide. The ability to rapidly and accurately sequence influenza viruses is instrumental in the prevention and mitigation of influenza. All eight influenza genes from an influenza A virus were amplified by PCR simultaneously and then subjected to sequencing on a MinION nanopore sequencer. A complete influenza virus genome was obtained that shared greater than 99% identity with sequence data obtained from Illumina MiSeq and traditional Sanger-sequencing. The laboratory infrastructure and computin

Optically resonant devices are promising as label-free biomolecular sensors due to their ability to concentrate electromagnetic energy into small mode volumes and their capacity for multiplexed detection. A fundamental limitation of current optical biosensor technology is that the biomolecular interactions are limited to the surface of the resonant device, while the highest intensity of electromagnetic energy is trapped within the core. In this paper, we present nanoporous polymer optofluidic devices consisting of ring resonators coupled to bus waveguides. We report a 40% increase in polymer d

Glassy materials undergo physical aging, changing their physical properties as they approach thermodynamic equilibrium. When confined in nanopores, glass-forming systems exhibit peculiar behavior, including out-of-equilibrium phenomena observed on a molecular time scale much faster than in the bulk. This occurs during rapid cooling, when the fraction of molecules located near the confining walls becomes kinetically frozen at the experimental time scale. As a result, the α-relaxation of the core fraction becomes faster than the equilibrium bulk liquid at the same temperature. Upon prolonged ann

Surface particle exfoliation occurs in diverse engineering applications. In shale gas development, high-pressure water injection creates fracture networks in tight shales while simultaneously inducing particle exfoliation from the reservoir rock. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms, we employ molecular dynamics simulations of the water flow within Illite shale nanopores. Our results reveal a four-stage exfoliation process, characterized by equivalent stress evolution, velocity distribution, and water-particle interactions. Initially, rough particles adhered to the Illite substrate in a laye

Nanopore sensors have demonstrated single-molecule resolution for nucleic acids and small molecules, yet the discrimination and detection of folded proteins in complex biological matrices remains a challenge. Insulin is a demanding test case: it circulates in blood at picomolar concentrations, differs from clinically used pharmaceutical analogues by as little as a single amino acid, and its continuous monitoring would close the remaining open loop in artificial pancreas systems. Here, we show targeted mutations near MspA nanopore's constriction-enabled discrimination of insulin from the pharma

Solid-state nanopore (SSN) sequencing has emerged as a revolutionary technique in genetic and proteomic analysis, offering low costs and long read-lengths. However, traditional SSN sequencing, which relies on an electric field to drive biomolecules, faces challenges in translocating nonuniformly charged proteins, limiting its application in single-molecule protein sequencing. In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed to investigate peptide translocation across a BC3/C3N van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure nanopore in the absence of external forces. Our results revealed th
