Exposure assessment of carbon nanotube manufacturing workplaces.

Seven CNT (carbon nanotube) handling workplaces were investigated for exposure assessment. Personal sampling, area sampling, and real-time monitoring using an SMPS (scanning mobility particle sizer), dust monitor, and aethalometer were performed to characterize the mass exposure, particle size distribution, and particle number exposure. No workplace was found to exceed the current ACGIH (American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists) TLVs (threshold limit values) and OELs (occupational exposure levels) set by the Korean Ministry of Labor for carbon black (3.5 mg/m(3)), PNOS (partic

Cobalt Phthalocyanine Axially Coordinated with Carbon Nanotubes for Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Reduction into Methanol.

The electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to methanol (MeOH) in aqueous media represents a key pathway toward achieving sustainable carbon recycling and utilization, particularly in the context of carbon neutrality goals. Cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc), a well-established molecular catalyst with tunable active sites, has been investigated for CO2-to-MeOH conversion. However, its efficiency for methanol production is often limited by facile desorption of the critical *CO intermediate. Herein, we report a molecular electrocatalyst featuring CoPc axially coordinated with hydroxyl-functionalized carbon

Assessment of the Carcinogenicity of Carbon Nanotubes in the Respiratory System.

In 2014, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified the first type of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as possibly carcinogenic to humans, while in the case of other CNTs, it was not possible to ascertain their toxicity due to lack of evidence. Moreover, the physicochemical heterogeneity of this group of substances hamper any generalization on their toxicity. Here, we review the recent relevant toxicity studies produced after the IARC meeting in 2014 on an homogeneous group of CNTs, highlighting the molecular alterations that are relevant for the onset of mesothelioma. Methods: T

Effect of water on the electrical properties of carbon nanotubes.

In this work we present the electrical characterization of carbon nanotubes synthesized by a thermal chemical deposition method, using carbon disulfide as the precursor of carbon and iron as the catalyst. We found a broad maximum in the electrical resistance as a function of temperature between 275-300 K and a hysteretic behavior when the measurements were made in a humid environment. We propose that the water molecules act as traps for charge carriers, and the overall behavior of the observed phenomenon is discussed in terms of the confinement of water inside the carbon nanotubes.

An experimental study of melting of CCl4 in carbon nanotubes.

We report dielectric relaxation spectroscopy measurements of the melting point of carbon tetrachloride confined within open-tip multi-walled carbon nanotubes with two different pore diameters, 4.0 and 2.8 nm. In both cases, a single transition temperature well above the bulk melting point was obtained for confined CCl4. These results contrast with what was obtained in our previous measurements using carbon nanotubes with a pore diameter of 5.0 nm, where multiple transition temperatures both above and below the bulk melting point of CCl4 were observed. Our experimental measurements are consiste

Adsorption removal of antiviral drug oseltamivir and its metabolite oseltamivir carboxylate by carbon nanotubes: Effects of carbon nanotube properties and media.

This investigation evaluated the adsorption behavior of the antiviral drugs of oseltamivir (OE) and its metabolites (i.e., oseltamivir carboxylate (OC)) on three types of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) including single-walled CNT (SWCNT), multi-walled CNT (MWCNT), and carboxylated SWCNT (SWCNT-COOH). CNTs can efficiently remove more than 90% of the OE and OC from aqueous solution when the initial concentration was lower than 10(-4) mmol/L. The Polanyi-Manes model depicted the adsorption isotherms of OE and OC on CNTs better than the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The properties of OE/OC and the char

Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes for regulating nickel nanoparticles towards efficient electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction.

Coating transition metal nanoparticles with the carbon layer represents a highly effective strategy to modulate electronic structure for enhanced catalytic performance. Nevertheless, it is challenging for these materials to achieve the desired catalytic activity. Here, we synthesized a series of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes confined nickel nanoparticles (Nix@NC) through high-temperature pyrolysis to facilitate the efficient electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction to carbon monoxide (CO). The morphology and electronic structure of Nix@NC were effectively controlled by optimizing the c

Acute Toxicity of Carbon Nanotubes, Carbon Nanodots, and Cell-Penetrating Peptides to Freshwater Cyanobacteria.

Synthetic non-metallic nanoparticles (NMNPs) such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon nanodots (CNDs), and cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) have been explored to treat harmful algal blooms. However, their strain-specific algicidal activities have been rarely investigated. Here we determined their acute toxicity to nine freshwater cyanobacterial strains belonging to seven genera, including Microcystis aeruginosa UTEX 2386, M. aeruginosa UTEX 2385, M. aeruginosa LE3, Anabaena cylindrica PCC 7122, Aphanizomenon sp. NZ, Planktothrix agardhii SB 1810, Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, Lyngbya sp. CCAP 144

Universal parameters for carbon nanotube network-based sensors: can nanotube sensors be reproducible?

Carbon nanotube (CNT) network-based sensors have been often considered unsuitable for practical applications due to their unpredictable characteristics. Herein, we report the study of universal parameters which can be used to characterize CNT network-based sensors and make their response predictable. A theoretical model is proposed to explain these parameters, and sensing experiments for mercury (Hg(2+)) and ammonium (NH(4)(+)) ions using CNT network-based sensors were performed to confirm the validity of our model.

Nanoparticulate Co-doped CuO/Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Composite for Dopamine.

Dopamine is a key neurotransmitter crucial for learning, memory, emotion, sleep, and motor control. Its imbalance is linked to disorders such as Parkinson's disease and depression. To address the limitations of costly and specialized dopamine detection methods, this study developed an electrochemical sensor using copper oxide (CuO) and 3 mol% cobalt doped CuO (Co-doped CuO) composite with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). Both materials were synthesized via solution combustion, yielding single-phase nanoparticles under 100 nm. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) showed dopamine oxidation at 0.75 V for

One-Dimensional Acoustic Plasmons in Metallic Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes.

Acoustic plasmons, collective out-of-phase oscillations of image charges, can confine electric fields with exceptional strength, making them highly effective for applications requiring intense field localization. Here, we predict the existence of one-dimensional (1D) acoustic plasmons in metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on metallic substrates. These 1D acoustic plasmons achieve intensive electric field concentration with the plasmon wavelength contracted by approximately 22% compared to 1D plasmons in SWNTs. Because 1D plasmons in SWNTs are described by Luttinger liquid theory w

Advances in Carbon Nanotubes: Revolutionizing Cancer Diagnosis and Targeted Therapy.

Nanotechnology has been applied to the diagnostic and therapeutic treatment of cancer, with Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) serving as an effective platform for these processes. In addition to their known physicochemical characteristics, such as high surface area, mechanical strength, and ease of functionalization, CNTs possess pharmacokinetic properties that enable their use in targeted drug-delivery and diagnostic systems. Through functionalization, biodistribution, cellular uptake, and circulatory time can be modulated, thereby overcoming the limitations of traditional therapies, such as low bioava

Glucosamine functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes as potential antibacterial molecules.

Antibiotic resistance represents a critical global health challenge driven by the widespread misuse of antimicrobials and the rapid evolution of multidrug-resistant pathogens. Conventional antibiotics are increasingly limited by poor stability, low bioavailability, toxicity, and reduced efficacy. This study investigates the potential of carbon nanotube-based nanocarriers to enhance antibiotic delivery and efficacy against resistant bacteria. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes were oxidized and functionalized with glucosamine, followed by loading with two antibiotics, ethacridine lactate and sulfame

Long-lived electronic spin qubits in single-walled carbon nanotubes.

Electron spins in solid-state systems offer the promise of spin-based information processing devices. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), an all-carbon one-dimensional material whose spin-free environment and weak spin-orbit coupling promise long spin coherence times, offer a diverse degree of freedom for extended range of functionality not available to bulk systems. A key requirement limiting spin qubit implementation in SWCNTs is disciplined confinement of isolated spins. Here, we report the creation of highly confined electron spins in SWCNTs via a bottom-up approach. The record long c

Integration of inflammation, fibrosis, and cancer induced by carbon nanotubes.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are nanomaterials with unique physicochemical properties that are targets of great interest for industrial and commercial applications. Notwithstanding, some characteristics of CNTs are associated with adverse outcomes from exposure to pathogenic particulates, raising concerns over health risks in exposed workers and consumers. Indeed, certain forms of CNTs induce a range of harmful effects in laboratory animals, among which inflammation, fibrosis, and cancer are consistently observed for some CNTs. Inflammation, fibrosis, and malignancy are complex pathological process

Photolysis-Driven, Room Temperature Filling of Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes.

An alternative process for opening and filling single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) based on UV photolysis is proposed. The filling of SWCNTs with MoCl5 and iodine were successfully achieved at room temperature after subjecting SWCNTs with MoCl5 or I₂ dissolved in chloroform to UV light for 6 hours. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) were used to characterise both the encapsulated materials and the host tube. A mechanism for the related opening and filling events is proposed, along with a possible yet unprecedented structure for the encapsulate

Aligned Carbon Nanotubes Reduce Hypertrophic Scar via Regulating Cell Behavior.

Hypertrophic scars, characterized by excessive cell proliferation, disordered cell growth, and aberrant deposition of collagens, could cause significant clinical problems. Herein, aligned carbon nanotubes (ACNTs) were synthesized via chemical vapor deposition, and bulk ACNTs were pulled out from the arrays. The capacity of the ACNTs to reduce hypertrophic scar formation was evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. The results demonstrated that the ACNTs suppressed the overproliferation of fibroblast cells, directed their growth, and inhibited collagen expression in vitro without cell cytotoxicity.

Potential Occupational Risks Associated with Pulmonary Toxicity of Carbon Nanotubes.

Given their remarkable properties, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have made their way through various industrial and medicinal applications and the overall production of CNTs is expected to grow rapidly in the next few years, thus requiring an additional recruitment of workers. However, their unique applications and desirable properties are fraught with concerns regarding occupational exposure. The concern about worker exposure to CNTs arises from the results of recent animal studies. Short-term and sub-chronic exposure studies in rodents have shown consistent adverse health effects such as pulmonary

Purification of carbon nanotubes by high temperature chlorine gas treatment.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have a tremendous amount of potential to become useful components for future practical applications that may become a part of everyday life. While the sp(2) carbon itself is a rather chemically inert material, the issue of residual metal nanoparticle catalysts remains a prominent barrier in the utilization of CNTs in many areas due to the strong influence of these metallic impurities on the redox chemistry of biomarkers. Even with a standard purification procedure, CNTs have been shown to still contain residual metal nanoparticle catalysts. As such, presented in this pa
