[Determination of polychlorinated naphthalenes in ambient air by isotope dilution gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry].

Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) have a structure similar to that of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and represent a new type of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that are widely present in the environment and biological communities. PCNs can migrate and transform via different environmental media, which severely affects the health of humans and organisms. Researchers have devoted considerable focus on ambient air pollution. Although the current ambient air quality has not yet limited the concentration of PCNs, the Stockholm Convention has required parties to prohibit and eliminate thei

AgOTf-catalyzed electrophilic cyclization of triynols with NXS: rapid synthesis of densely trisubstituted naphthalenes and quinolines.

A silver triflate-catalyzed electrophilic cyclization reaction of acyclic triynols with NXS (X=I, Br) under mild conditions is reported. Three reactive functional groups, such as a carbonyl group, an alkyne group, and a halogen, could be selectively installed at the C1, C2, and C3 positions to obtain the naphthalene and quinoline products, respectively. The obtained densely trisubstituted products could be further transformed into more complex aromatic products by manipulating the alkynyl moiety and the other two functional groups as synthons.

Acute Kidney Injury Following Naphthalene (Mothball) Poisoning.

Naphthalene is a widely available moth repellant in the Asian subcontinent. Toxicity can occur either accidentally or intentionally as a suicide attempt. An overdose can lead to a variety of clinical symptoms, including intravascular hemolysis, and can sometimes lead to life-threatening clinical situations. A young male was admitted to our center with an alleged history of ingesting an unknown quantity of naphthalene balls (mothballs). He developed methemoglobinemia, intra-vascular hemolysis, anuria, and acute kidney injury (AKI), followed by cardiorespiratory arrest. He was treated successful

Copper-catalyzed nitration of electron-deficient BN-naphthalene.

Under Cu-catalysis, a regioselective nitration of 1,8-dihalogenated BN-naphthalene (ABN) compounds (4a-4c) has been established with the use of tert-butyl nitrite as the nitrating reagent. The syntheses of dihalo-ABN nitro products (6a-6c; halo = Cl, Br and I) were case-studied in conjunction with the first synthesis and characterization of diiodo-ABN compound 4c. The molecular structures of these compounds have been spectroscopically characterized and further confirmed by X-ray single crystal diffraction experiments. This method allows direct regioselective nitration of electron-deficient ABN

Supramolecular Chirality Issues in Unorthodox Naphthalene Diimide Gelators.

Herein, the self-assembly of a few 1,3-dihydroxyl functionalized naphthalene diimide (NDI) derivatives has been reported with particular emphasis on the impact of chirality on gelation and the effect of self-assembly on charge-carrier mobility. A nonconventional gelator (R)-NDI, devoid of any long alkyl chains, exhibited spontaneous gelation in tetra-chloroethylene (TCE). Based on X-ray crystallography and powder X-ray diffraction studies, it was established that a ladder-like hydrogen-bonded chain formation between the 1,3-dihydroxyl group leads to the fibrillar structures with preferential h

Naphthalene ball poisoning: a rare cause of acquired methaemoglobinaemia.

A 15-year-old boy presented to emergency services with accidental naphthalene ball ingestion. Following consumption he developed methaemoglobinaemia, massive intravascular haemolysis and acute kidney injury. He had no history suggestive of congenital haemoglobin M disease. Development of severe methaemoglobinaemia and intravascular haemolysis is quite unusual after consumption of a single ball of naphthalene. The patient was managed with ascorbic acid and intravenous N-acetyl cysteine. He also required haemodialysis for acute kidney injury that developed secondary to pigment nephropathy.

Enzymes of naphthalene metabolism by Pseudomonas fluorescens 26K strain.

The ability of Pseudomonas fluorescens 26K strain to utilize naphthalene at concentrations up to 600 mg/liter as the sole source of carbon and energy in mineral liquid media was shown. Using HPLC, TLC, and mass-spectrometry, the intermediates of naphthalene transformation by this strain were identified as naphthalene cis-1,2-dihydrodiol, salicylaldehyde, salicylate, catechol, 2-hydroxymuconic semialdehyde, and 1-naphthol. Catechol 2,3-dioxygenase (a homotetramer with native molecular mass 125 kDa) and NAD+-dependent homohexameric naphthalene cis-1,2-dihydrodiol dehydrogenase with native molecu

[Growth of bacteria degrading naphthalene and salicylate at low temperatures].

A total of 58 bacterial strains degrading naphthalene and salicylate were isolated from soil samples polluted with oil products, collected in different regions of Russia during winter and summer. The isolates were assessed for their ability to grow at low temperatures (4, 8, and 15 degrees C); bacteria growing at 4 degrees C in the presence of naphthalene or salicylate accounted for 65% and 53%, respectively, of the strains isolated. The strains differed in the temperature dependence of their growth rates. It was demonstrated that the type of expression of Nah+ phenotype at low temperatures de

[Identification of the key genes of naphthalene catabolism in soil DNA].

The key genes nahAc and xylE of the naphthalene catabolism of fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. in the total soil DNA samples were detected by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. The collection of fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. was screened for the occurrence of these genes. The results obtained show the possibility of using this approach in the goal-directed search for plasmid-containing naphthalene-degrading fluorescent pseudomonads in soil. The distribution of the naphthalene catabolism genes in soils contaminated with creosote and petroleum products was also studied.

Dietary curcumin prevents ocular toxicity of naphthalene in rats.

Administration of naphthalene is known to cause cataract formation in rats and rabbits and naphthalene-initiated cataract is frequently used as a model for studies on senile cataract in humans. Oxidative stress has been implicated in the mechanism of naphthalene-induced cataract. Curcumin, a constituent of turmeric, a spice used in Indian curry dishes, is an effective antioxidant and is known to induce the enzymes of glutathione-linked detoxification pathways in rats. During the present studies, we have examined whether low levels of dietary curcumin could prevent naphthalene-induced opacifica

Naphthalene dioxygenase: purification and properties of a terminal oxygenase component.

Naphthalene dioxygenase from Pseudomonas sp. strain NCIB 9816 is a multicomponent enzyme system that oxidized naphthalene to cis-(1R, 2S)-dihydroxy-1,2-dihydronaphthalene. The terminal oxygenase component B was purified to homogeneity by a three-step procedure that utilized ion-exchange and hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The purified enzyme oxidized naphthalene only in the presence of NADH, oxygen, and partially purified preparations of components A and C. An estimated Mr of 158,000 was obtained by gel filtration. Physical state in which naphthalene and bibenzyl are utilized by bacteria.

The generation times of a strain of Pseudomonas grown on a mineral salts medium in the presence of various amounts of naphthalene did not vary with the amount of solid present, and these generation times were the same as the generation time on mineral salts medium containing only dissolved naphthalene. The generation time of a soil isolate grown on mineral salts medium in the presence of 0.5 g of solid bibenzyl per liter was the same as the generation time on a mineral salts medium saturated with bibenzyl. The evidence indicates that naphthalene and bibenzyl are utilized in the dissolved state

Exploration of Spectrodynamic Behavior of a Naphthalene-Based Schiff Base (E)-2-((Naphthalen-1-ylimino)methyl)-4-nitrophenol: Synergistic Effects of ESIPT and Excimers.

Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and excimer formation are unimolecular and bimolecular reactions, respectively. It is not frequent to observe coupling between these two excited-state processes. In this work, we have shown the coupling between excimer formation and ESIPT processes in a custom-designed fluorophore (E)-2-((naphthalen-1-ylimino)methyl)-4-nitrophenol (NMNP) in different matrices using steady state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopic measurements followed by quantum chemical calculations. Extensive spectral analyses of NMNP in different media reveal the

An accessible property classification framework to predict the solubility of functionalised naphthalenes and rylenes in organic solvents.

The development of functional materials such as multilayer films from supramolecular self-assembling materials is hindered by the current lack of design principles and predictability. Quantitative structure-property relationships have emerged as a useful technique to tie properties of interest to the molecular structure across various applications but have not been widely explored in supramolecular material problems. Herein we describe and share an accessible, visual programming, classification framework which we have applied to the prediction of solubility of amino acid-functionalised napthal

Concentrations and trophic magnification of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) in marine fish from the Bohai coastal area, China.

Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) have been found widely in the aquatic environment and can be transferred through food chains, which can magnify or dilute their toxic effects on humans. In this study, PCNs were analyzed in samples of 17 species of fish with different dietary habits collected in the Bohai coastal area in China. Dichloronaphthalenes, which have rarely been quantified in previous studies, were determined. The total PCN concentrations were from 7.3 to 214 pg/g wet weight, and the highest concentration was found in ditrema. The trichloronaphthalenes were the most abundant PCNs,

Selective monoformylation of naphthalene-fused propellanes for methylene-alternating copolymers.

Development of three-dimensional (3D) building blocks is a key to change tight molecular assemblies of rigid π-conjugated planes into organic functional materials endowed with molecular-size cavities. To increase the diversity of available 3D building blocks, we herein report electrophilic formylation of naphthalene-fused [3.3.3]- and [4.3.3]propellanes as the first selective single-point functionalization by virtue of through-space electronic communications between the naphthalene units. The propellane skeletons have well-defined 3D structures and moderate flexibility at the same time. Theref
