Pathological narcissism (PN) and narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) are common yet highly stigmatized conditions for which no empirically validated treatment currently exists, despite growing evidence of the central role of psychoeducation. The goal of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of our recently published group psychoeducation program for patients with PN, with or without a diagnosis of NPD. Twenty-five adult patients, who met ≥3 NPD criteria or presented with mean grandiosity and vulnerability scores ≥3 on the Pathological Narcissism Inventory-Brief Form

BACKGROUND: There is a presumption that pathological narcissism, or narcissistic personality disorder per se, can be considered a precursor to addiction. Although the ICD-11 model does not distinguish specific personality disorders, narcissistic psychopathology should be captured through personality trait qualifiers.
OBJECTIVES: To verify the capacity of the ICD-11 model in the detection of narcissistic psychopathology in patients with addiction; to test its discrimination capacity, convergent validity, and specificity toward the gender and the type of addiction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two s

Pathologic narcissism (PN) and narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) are 2 common and stigmatized clinical constructs that are known to have large consequences for patients' functioning and mental health-related outcomes. To date, no treatment for these conditions has been empirically validated, but there is a relative consensus about the importance of psychoeducation. Here we present a model for a psychoeducational intervention for patients with PN or NPD. We start with a review of the current evidence on the role of psychoeducation in different treatment models for PN, and we discuss sever

BACKGROUND: The treatment of patients diagnosed with a narcissistic personality disorder (NPS) is considered to be extra challenging. Well-controlled studies on the effectiveness of psychotherapy in NPS patients are not available; so many interventions are based on theoretical constructs. The clarification-oriented psychotherapy (COP) is a psychotherapeutic approach, which emerged from concepts of the cognitive behavioral therapy, client-centered psychotherapy and various process-oriented procedures. The present ambulatory therapy-evaluation of COP aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a psyc

Several cases of COVID-19-related mental disorders have emerged during the pandemic. In a case of femicide that occurred in Italy during the first phase of the pandemic, coinciding with a national lockdown, a discrepancy arose among forensic psychiatry experts, particularly toward the diagnosis of Brief Psychotic Disorder (BPD) related to COVID-19. We aimed to discuss the evaluation of the case through an integration of information and a literature review on comparable reported cases. An analysis of the diagnosis of brief acute psychosis was then performed, as well as a mini-review on cases of

Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the influence of the polymorphism of the protocadherin 9 (PCDH9) gene and the narcissistic personality trait (NPT) on the risk of major depressive disorder (MDD) in Chinese first-year university students. Methods: A 2-year cohort study was conducted among Chinese first-year university students who were enrolled in 2018 from two universities in Shandong Province, China. The snapshot technique was used to detect the genotypes of PCDH9 (rs9540720). The Chinese version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview was used for the MDD ass

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies have shown that children of parents with mental health problems are most likely to develop psychiatric problems themselves when their parents have a Personality Disorder characterized by hostility. The Personality Disorders that appear most associated with hostility, with the potential to affect children, are Borderline Personality Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder and Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The question addressed in this study is whether the risk to children's mental health extends to the normal population of parents who have subclinical sympto

BACKGROUND: Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is known to comprise two distinct but connected phenotypes related to 'grandiosity' and 'vulnerability', respectively. While evidence suggests differing countertransference responses to narcissism subtype expression, no study has examined this using a qualitative methodology and explored associations with ratings of personality disorder severity.
METHOD: Mental health clinicians (N = 180, 67% female, age = 38.9), completed qualitative clinical reflections and ratings of overall personality disorder severity towards two hypothetical vignettes

We demonstrate a means of conservatively combining self and peer data regarding personality pathology and interpersonal behavior through structural equation modeling, focusing on avoidant personality disorder traits as well as those of two comparison personality disorders (dependent and narcissistic). Assessment of the relationship between personality disorder traits and interpersonal problems based on either self or peer data alone would result in counterintuitive findings regarding avoidant personality disorder. In contrast, analysis of the variance shared between self and peer leads to resu

We aimed to investigate the relationships of ICD-11 personality disorder (PD) severity and five maladaptive personality domains with narcissistic grandiosity and narcissistic vulnerability among 398 Croatian adult psychiatric patients. They completed the following self-report questionnaires: the ICD-11 Personality Disorder Severity Scale, the Personality Assessment Questionnaire for ICD-11, and the Pathological Narcissism Inventory. Narcissistic grandiosity showed meaningful associations with the Disinhibition and Anankastia domains. Conversely, narcissistic vulnerability was significantly mor

This article presents a series of studies on narcissism, a personality syndrome receiving increasing theoretical and practical attention. Four empirical studies were carried out to (a) identify narcissistic acts in everyday life, (b) identify the acts subsumed by dispositions that are seen as central components of narcissism, (c) identify which acts and which dispositions are most and least central to narcissism, (d) test the hypothesis that the conceptually specified component dispositions of the narcissistic personality disorder indeed covary sufficiently to merit the designation of narcissi

The troubled life and death of William Thomas Green Morton has been described in several texts. His first public demonstration of ether anesthesia was the highpoint of a life that was less than successful in many of his endeavors. Close examination of this life reveals a pattern of behavior that progresses from narcissistic traits to narcissistic personality pathology. This retrospective psychiatric analysis of Morton's life was undertaken to theorize as to why Morton, after having successfully demonstrated ether anesthesia, did not continue to develop anesthesia as a clinical specialty. The psychoanalytic concept of narcissistic disorder is broader than that of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (DSM-5 [1]), underlying a range of Personality Disorders (PD) and their co-morbidities. Existing Mentalisation, Psychoanalytic and Cognitive models, fail to account fully for the emerging evidence of biological, developmental, relational and defensive contributions to narcissistic disorder, nor do they account for the common and variant features of co-morbidities namely Anorexia Nervosa, Somatisation, Substance Misuse and Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Personality disorders describe enduring, pervasive, pathologic patterns of behavior and inner experiences that deviate from a patient's culture. Personality disorders are divided into three clusters depending on core features. Diagnosis of a personality disorder is generally made based on criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, although other diagnostic modalities exist. The most common disorders in primary care settings include obsessive-compulsive personality, narcissistic personality, and borderline personality disorders. Obsessive-compulsive personality dis

OBJECTIVE: Body dysmorphic disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and histrionic personality disorders are the most frequent personality disorders in patients seeking cosmetic interventions. Botulinum toxin type A (BoNTA) injection for cosmetic purpose is the most popular among non-surgical cosmetic procedures and is also the second common aesthetic treatment in Iran. The current study aimed to assess personality disorders in people who were referred for BoNTA injection in Ardabil, Iran. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on personality disorders in applicants for cosm

Temperament refers to enduring, biologically rooted affective dispositions that influence how individuals experience and regulate emotion. Although central to classical psychiatry, from Kraepelin's manic-depressive illness to Akiskal's affective styles, temperaments have been largely excluded from modern nosology and psychoanalytic theory. This omission has contributed to diagnostic confusion, particularly in differentiating cyclothymic temperament from borderline personality disorder and hyperthymic temperament from narcissistic personality disorder. While these conditions share surface simil

This study compared the personality characteristics of 104 adults diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Personality features were assessed with the MCMI-II (Millon, 1987). Participants were divided into 4 groups based on the presence of persisting oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) or other comorbid diagnoses (ADHD only, ADHD-comorbid, ADHD-ODD, ADHD-ODD-comorbid). Significant differences between these groups were present for 9 of the 13 MCMI-II personality scales, resulting in 4 modal personality styles. ADHD-only adults evidenced mild histrionic traits, whereas the

Cluster B personality disorders are characterized by pervasive emotional dysregulation and rigid interpersonal patterns, and they remain challenging to treat. Mindful hypnotherapy (MH), which integrates mindfulness and clinical hypnosis, may offer a transdiagnostic approach to cognitive and emotional inflexibility. This randomized controlled trial compared the efficacy of MH with an active control condition in reducing symptoms of Cluster B personality disorders. One hundred and twenty adults who met DSM-5 criteria for histrionic, narcissistic, antisocial, or borderline personality disorder we
