Single Nasal Bones: A Report of Two Cases.

The nasal bones are important bony parts of the external nose and maxillofacial scaffold. Generally, the nasal bone is a small quadrangular plate paired and attached to the frontonasal suture superiorly and the nasal septum internally. The nasal septum is symmetrically located and comprises the septal cartilage, the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone, and the vomer. Herein, we report the anatomy of single nasal bones (SNB) identified in two human skulls. Two adult human skulls were found to have SNB. In one, the nasal septum was bifid and hooked as it joined with the nasal bone superiorly

Bone grafts as a recyclable material in nasal surgeries.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate long-term results of septal bone grafting and to show sustainable viability of bone grafts with objective parameters such as computed tomography. METHODS: Nasal septal bones were used as splinting grafts during septo/rhinoplasty operations in 27 patients (Male=16; Female=11) between 2009 and 2013. Of these, only the 21 patients who were monitored long-term and who had computed tomography (CT) records were included in this investigation. The average duration of monitoring for the patients reported here was 17 (12-37 months) months. Patients were excluded for the followin

The prenatal development of the human nasal and vomeral bones.

The purpose of the present study was to establish normal prenatal development standards for the nasal and vomeral bones, both formed by intramembranous ossification in the membrane covering the cartilaginous nasal capsule. The study is based upon a combination of macroscopic (devisceration and radiography) and microscopic (histology) analyses on 62 normal human fetuses from spontaneous and induced abortions, ranging in gestational age from 9 to 24 weeks, representing crown-rump lengths (CRL) from 33 to 225 mm. Special attention was paid to the onset of bone formation in relation to other matur

Effect of nasal salmon calcitonin on bone remodeling and bone mass in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

The effect of nasal salmon calcitonin (SCT) on bone has been investigated by densitometry, biochemical markers of bone turnover, and histomorphometry. 62 women (mean age 65 years) who had experienced Colles' fracture after menopause were randomized to receive either nasal salmon calcitonin (SCT) 200 IU or nasal placebo daily for 24 months. All received a daily supplement of 0.5 g calcium. There was a significant increase above baseline in the bone mineral density of the lumbar spine in the SCT group (2.5%; 95% confidence interval 0.9--4.2%) and in the placebo group (1.7%; 95% confidence interv

Intranasal Bolsters: A Novel Technique for Nasal Bone Stabilization.

Nasal bone stabilization, in the setting of comminuted nasal fracture or surgical osteotomy, represents a challenging surgical experience. Postoperative shifting of osseous fragments may result in compromised outcomes in an otherwise well-performed procedure. Although prior studies have reported nasal bone fixation with implementation of wires, plates, or halos, these techniques are often difficult to employ routinely. Herein, the authors describe a novel and facile technique for the maintenance of unstable nasal bones using customized intranasal bolsters.

Intraosseous Hemangioma of Nasal Bone: Unusual Cause of Epiphora.

Intraosseous hemangioma is very rare, accounting for <1% of bone tumors. Nasal bone origin of it is even rarer. A 63-year-old female patient visited our clinic with a complaint of epiphora. On physical examination, about 2-cm-sized nontender and fixed mass was palpated along the left nasomaxillary suture area. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging findings were consistent with intraosseous hemangioma originating from the nasal bone. Epiphora was thought to be developed due to the mass effect and a marginal resection of the mass was performed. The defect was reconstructed with a septal cartil

New maneuver for fixation of pediatric nasal bone fracture.

Surgical treatment of nasal bone fractures in children is a complex and challenging task not only to maxillofacial surgeons but exceeding to ears, nose, and throat and plastic surgeons. Twelve child patients including 9 boys (75%) and 3 girls (25%) with nasal bone fractures were seen at the Maxillofacial Surgery Department at Ramadi Teaching Hospital during the period of December 2009 to December 2010. Fractured nasal bone is reduced to its anatomic position with Walsham forceps, and the dislocated or disrupted nasal septum with Asch forceps. The most common cause of the injury was road traffi

Early reexploration after closed reduction of nasal bone fracture.

The aim of this study was to analyze the cases that were reexplored shortly after closed reduction of the nasal bone fracture. From 1996 to 2009, 955 patients (757 males and 198 females) were operated on for the nasal bone fractures. The nasal splints were applied and removed 1 week postoperatively, and the results of nasal reduction were reviewed. Indications for reexploration were undercorrection or deviation of the reduced nasal bone.Of the 955 patients, 13 (11 males and 2 females; 1.36%) were reexplored. The recorrection was done 7.78 +/- 4.77 days after the initial surgery. Mostly local a

Nasal bone in first-trimester screening for trisomy 21.

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to investigate the impact of incorporating assessment of the nasal bone into first-trimester combined screening by fetal nuchal translucency (NT) thickness and maternal serum biochemistry. STUDY DESIGN: In this prospective combined screening study for trisomy 21, the fetal nasal bone was also examined and classified as present or absent. A multivariate approach was used to calculate patient-specific risks for trisomy 21 and the detection rate (DR) and false-positive rate (FPR) were estimated. We examined 2 screening strategies; first, integrated first-trim

Dorsal nasal reconstruction using bone harvested from the mandible.

PURPOSE: This article describes a technique for reconstructing nasal deformities resulting from trauma. Bone harvested from the lateral ramus/body of the mandible is used to provide nasal support for major nasal deformities. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten patients underwent repair of their nasal deformities with an autogenous bone graft harvested from the mandible. Primary bone grafting was used to repair a nasal deformity associated with a naso-orbito-ethmoidal fracture in 8 patients. Secondarily, 2 patients underwent placement of a graft for correction of a saddle nose deformity. RESULTS: All p

A rare case of sino-nasal aneurysmal bone cyst.

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are rare in the paranasal sinuses. They are benign expansile multicystic masses containing blood-filled spaces which typically occur in the long bones of pediatric patients. The lesion often produces symptoms due to the compression of adjacent structures or pathological fracture and depends on localization. In this case report, we discuss a 28-year-old female who presented with left-sided headache, left eye proptosis, and diplopia. Radiologic evaluation revealed a left paranasal sinus expansile multicystic mass with internal blood fluid levels displacing and thinnin

Demographic Factors of Nasal Bone Fractures and Social Reflection.

INTRODUCTION: The nose is the most protruding central part of the face, and nasal bone fractures are the most common of facial bone fractures, leading up to 39%. Despite its high frequency, not many studies handled the etiology of nasal bone fractures, leading to the necessity of a recent demographic study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1111 patients diagnosed with nasal bone fracture from 2013 to 2018 at our institute were evaluated. A retrospective review of the various demographic and etiologic characteristics was done. RESULTS: Numerous factors associated with nasal bone fractures we

Hyoid bone fracture identified only with nasal Valsalva manoeuvre.

OBJECTIVE: We present two cases of a hyoid bone fracture identified through careful clinical examination with a Valsalva manoeuvre during nasendoscopy. METHOD: Case reports and review of the literature, with emphasis on technique during nasendoscopy. RESULTS: The first patient had sustained a blow to the neck with a stick, six months prior to presentation with a globus sensation. External examination and standard nasendoscopy were unremarkable. The second patient had been struck across the neck by a wire whilst riding a motorbike at low speed. Endoscopy revealed swelling of the supraglottis.

Conductor-assisted nasal sonography: an innovative technique for rapid and accurate detection of nasal bone fracture.

BACKGROUND: Nasal bone is frequently involved in craniofacial trauma. We sought to investigate the role of conductor-assisted nasal sonography (CANS) in patients with nasal trauma. METHODS: In all, 71 patients sustaining midfacial trauma who underwent CANS examination with simultaneous facial computed tomography (CT) scans were reviewed. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of nasal bone fracture identified by CANS and other plain films versus nasal bone fracture evidenced by CT scan, taken as the gold standard, were measured. RESULTS

Nasal septal hematoma is a rare and self-recognizable complication of nasal bone fracture: A retrospective study.

PURPOSE: Nasal septal hematoma (NSH) is a rare but potentially severe complication which can occur after nasal bone fracture (NBF). A subperichondrial accumulation of blood in the nasal septum can lead to breathing difficulties, infections and nasal deformities. To prevent such complications our department's standard operating procedure requires clinical exclusion of NSH both on the day after NBF and the day after nasal bone repositioning. These repeated appointments create a high organizational effort in the outpatient department. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of NSH after

Congenital Nasal Bones Agenesis: Report of a Rare Malformation.

Congenital arhinia and hyporhinia are rare facial anomalies whose knowledge usually comes from case reports. The severity of each case described in literature is variable; it also depends on associated malformations too. Since the newborns are obligate nasal breathers, babies with arhinia or hyporhinia usually have respiratory distress and need airway stabilization. In addition, most of these children present difficulties in feeding and this impairment must be managed early. We describe an unusual case of partial congenital arhinia, the baby did not have other anomalies or any specific complic
