New anatomical insights on the course and branching patterns of the facial artery: clinical implications of injectable treatments to the nasolabial fold and nasojugal groove.

BACKGROUND: Improper manipulation of injectable treatments to the face can result in disastrous vascular complications. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the detoured course of the facial artery and to provide detailed metric data regarding facial artery location with a view to helping physicians avoid iatrogenic vascular accidents during injectable treatments. METHODS: Sixty specimens from 35 embalmed cadavers (24 male and 11 female cadavers; mean age, 70.0 years) and one fresh male cadaver (age, 62 years) were used for this study. RESULTS: In 56 cases (93.3 percent), the branch

Intraoral Lesions Following Nose and Nasolabial Fold Augmentation Using Hyaluronic Acid/Poly-l-Lactic Acid Fillers: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Vascular complications after facial filling with hyaluronic acid/poly-l-lactic acid (HA/PLLA) composite fillers are rare. Herein, the authors report a case of vascular occlusion after nose and nasolabial fold augmentation with HA/PLLA that resulted in necrosis of the gingival papilla and unilateral hard palate mucosa and pulpitis. To explain the pathogenesis of necrosis of the gingival papilla and unilateral hard palate mucosa, the authors hypothesized that an embolus was accidentally injected into the infraorbital artery and nasal septum branch of the upper lip artery and subsequently flowed

Usefulness of a Skin Graft Obtained from the Bilateral Nasolabial Folds for a Skin Defect following Resection of a Malignant Tumor at the Nasal Tip.

The cosmetic appeal of the nose is very important, as it is a structure located at the center of the face. Hence, the removal of nasal tumors requires matching aesthetic subunits for the ensuing reconstruction. This procedure often creates large defects that require skin grafts or local flaps for repair. If a large skin graft is required, harvesting of flaps from the head and neck region might have some limitations. Although flaps from the forehead can cover a wide range of facial defects, the skin properties of the forehead differ from those of the rest of the face. Moreover, early postoperat

Application of 3-Dimensional Technology for Evaluating Muscular Type and Muscle-Fat Pad Mixed-Type Nasolabial Folds With Botulinum Toxin-A Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin-A (BTX-A) is used in the treatment of nasolabial folds (NLFs). However, lighting and clinician subjectivity play a major role in evaluating the efficacy of this treatment. OBJECTIVES: By applying 3-dimensional (3D) technology, this study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the effects of BTX-A injection on muscular (M) and muscle-fat pad mixed-type (MF) NLFs. METHODS: BTX-A was injected into bilateral marked points on the NLFs, where the levator labii alaeque nasi, zygomaticus minor, and zygomaticus major pull the skin to form the NLF (2 U at each injection site). Subunit-Based Reconstruction of a Composite Upper Lip Defect After Dog Bite Using a Mucosal V-Y Advancement Flap and Nasolabial Fold Rotational Flap.

Dog bite injuries involving the lips require careful reconstruction to restore both function and aesthetics. We report a case of a 64-year-old man with a composite defect of the upper lip after a dog bite. The defect involved the vermilion and extended to the adjacent cutaneous portion of the philtral column. Reconstruction was performed using a mucosal V-Y advancement flap for vermilionplasty and a nasolabial fold rotational flap for coverage of the cutaneous upper lip. This subunit-based approach restored both vermilion and cutaneous subunits using adjacent like-with-like tissue, resulting i

Divergent Time Courses of Poly-L-Lactic Acid and Hyaluronic Acid Fillers for Nasolabial Fold Correction: A Multicenter Randomized Trial With 120-Week Follow-Up.

INTRODUCTION: Nasolabial fold (NLF) correction is commonly evaluated at 6 to 12 months, yet the clinical distinction between immediate volumizing fillers and delayed biostimulatory fillers is best understood as a time-course problem rather than a single-visit comparison. This study compared the long-term efficacy trajectory and late safety profile of a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) dermal filler with a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler for correction of moderate-to-severe NLFs through 120 weeks after the final injection. METHODS: This multicenter randomized, evaluator-blinded, parallel-group parent tri

A multicenter study of the safety and effectiveness of hyaluronic acid with a cohesive polydensified matrix for treatment of nasolabial folds in subjects with Fitzpatrick skin types IV, V, and VI.

BACKGROUND: Although the use of the hyaluronic acid with cohesive polydensified matrix hyaluronic acid has been well explored in subjects with lighter skin (i.e., Fitzpatrick skin types I, II, and III), further exploration in subjects with Fitzpatrick skin types IV, V, and IV is warranted. The primary purpose of the study was to assess the safety of a cohesive polydensified matrix hyaluronic acid in the correction of nasolabial folds in subjects with Fitzpatrick skin types IV, V and VI, especially assessment of hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, and scarring. Effectiveness was also assessed.

Safety and Efficacy of Micronized Acellular Dermal Matrix Injection for Correction of Moderate to Severe Nasolabial Folds: A Double-Blind, Multicenter, Randomized Controlled, Non-inferior Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Nasolabial folds (NLFs) are prominent facial lines that deepen with age and may adversely affect facial aesthetics and psychosocial confidence. Injectable fillers, including micronized acellular dermal matrix (mADM), offer minimally invasive correction; however, clinical evidence for mADM's safety and efficacy remains limited. We conducted a double-blind, multicenter, randomized controlled trial to compare an mADM filler (Regenfil) with a regulatory agency-approved cross-linked collagen filler (Sunmax Collagen Implant I-Plus). METHODS: Adults aged ≥18 years with Wrinkle Severity R
