The human heart secretes both atrial natriuretic peptide and brain natriuretic peptide. This study attempts to clarify the pathophysiological significance of the peptides in cardiovascular diseases. Using immunoradiometric assay, plasma brain natriuretic peptide and atrial natriuretic peptide levels in essential hypertension, various secondary hypertension, chronic renal failure, chronic heart failure during cardiac pacing, and acute myocardial infarction were determined. Mean plasma brain natriuretic peptide and atrial natriuretic peptide levels in healthy subjects were 3.7 +/- 0.3 and 5.7 +/

The landmark report by de Bold et al. in 1981 signified the heart as one of the endocrine organs involved in fluid and salt balance (de Bold AJ, Borenstein HB, Veress AT, Sonnenberg H. Life Sci 28: 89-94, 1981). Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) are secreted from cardiomyocytes in response to cardiac stretch as in the case of heart failure, whereas C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) is secreted from endothelial and renal cells in response to cytokines and endothelium-dependent agonists, such as acetylcholine. Binding ANP or BNP to natriuretic peptide receptor A

Whereas the role of the cardiac natriuretic peptides, ANP and BNP, in some aspects of physiology and pathophysiology is clear, their potential in diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutics in many clinical disorders remains uncertain. We predict that circulating levels of these peptides will find increasing diagnostic utility in patients presenting with dyspnoea, in guiding the complex pharmacotherapy in heart failure, and may likewise be useful in guiding the management of patients on chronic maintenance renal dialysis. We predict also that levels of these peptides will be of practical use as pro

Cardiac natriuretic peptide hormones, atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), are synthesized and secreted by the heart, producing several biological effects, such as natriuresis, vasorelaxation and hypotension. During the last decade these peptides, especially BNP, have received increasing attention as potential markers of cardiovascular disease. Their measurements can be used to diagnose heart failure, including diastolic dysfunction, and using them has been shown to save money. BNP levels can enable the differentiation between dyspnoic patients secondary to ve

In patients with heart failure, increased wall stretch due to volume and pressure overload leads to an increase in circulating natriuretic peptides (ANP and BNP and their N-terminal fragments NT-proANP and NT-proBNP). Plasma BNP levels commonly considered normal (< 20 pg/ml) are influenced by age, sex, and also by genetic factors. ANP and BNP are synthesized and released by atrial and ventricular myocytes (Figure 1). In subjects with acute dyspnea, a BNP plasma concentration of 100 pg/ml has been established as a cutoff value for the diagnosis of heart failure yielding a very high negative pre

Both A- and C-type natriuretic peptides (ANP and CNP, respectively) significantly reduce LH secretion when injected into the third cerebral ventricle of conscious rats. To establish which natriuretic peptide receptor subtype transduces these inhibitory messages, we have employed novel cytotoxin cell targeting techniques to selectively destroy cells in the hypothalamus that respond to ANP or CNP. Rats pretreated with ANP conjugated to the toxic A-chain of the plant cytotoxin ricin failed 1 week later to respond to central injection of ANP with the normal inhibition of LH secretion. These rats d

BACKGROUND: The plasma levels of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) are increased in relation to the severity of congestive heart failure (CHF). This study was designed to examine whether the secretion patterns of ANP and BNP vary with underlying cardiac disorders of CHF with different degrees of overload in atria and ventricles.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We measured plasma levels of ANP and BNP in the aorta in 20 patients with mitral stenosis (MS) in whom atria are mainly overloaded, 30 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in whom both atria and ventricles

Left ventricular failure (LVF) is a clinical syndrome caused by abnormal systolic or diastolic function failing to meet the metabolic requirements of the body. It is important to diagnose and manage LVF in the earliest stages to prevent mortality and morbidity. This article extensively reviews the diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic utility of natriuretic peptides in LVF.

OBJECTIVE: To describe clinical features of a patient with secretions of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) during an epileptic attack.
PATIENT: A 65-year-old woman experienced frequent bouts of polyuria, pyrexia and general fatigue after several years of a cerebral contusion involving the left fronto-temporal lobe caused by a traffic accident. Her urine output and urinary sodium excretion increased, and plasma ANP and BNP concentrations were markedly high during each attack. Electroencephalography (EEG) showed serial seizure discharge in the left anterior te

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Silent atrial fibrillation (AF) and tachycardia (AT) are considered precursors of ischaemic stroke. Therefore, detection of paroxysmal atrial rhythm disorders is highly relevant, but is clinically challenging. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of natriuretic peptide levels in the detection of paroxysmal AT/AF in a pilot study.
METHODS: Natriuretic peptide levels were analysed in two independent patient cohorts (162 patients with arterial hypertension or other cardiovascular risk factors and 82 patients with retinal vessel disease). N-terminal-pro-brain natriure

Discoveries of the cardiac natriuretic peptides ANP, BNP, and CNP along with studies of their function and regulation in health and disease, have led to breakthroughs in the understanding and clinical management of heart failure. Analysis of the ANP and BNP promoters and patterns of expression uncovered a set of key regulators and pathways that converge onto these sensitive markers of early myocyte differentiation and cardiac stress. Among the most studied are the transcription factors GATA4, TBX5, and NKX2-5, which are central to cardiac development and mutations of which are associated with

Abrupt cessation of long-term alcohol consumption produces well-defined symptoms called alcohol withdrawal (AW). The exact pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the appearance of AW symptoms and particularly those related to the precipitation of delirium tremens (DT), still await clarification in spite of the fact that the prediction of complicated AW is essential to guarantee that appropriate therapies may be planned in advance. Changes in central nervous system (CNS) glutamate- and GABA-transmission and a role of voltage-operated calcium channels are equally important elements of neuroad

The usefulness of plasma atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP), and cyclic guanosine 3',5'- monophosphate (cGMP) as markers of fluid overload was examined in hemodialysis (HD) patients without diabetes mellitus. Plasma concentrations of ANP, BNP, CNP, and cGMP all decreased significantly during HD. Before HD, there was a strong correlation between plasma concentrations of ANP and those of BNP, and plasma concentrations of cGMP correlated significantly with those of all three natriuretic peptides. The cardiothoracic ratio also correl

BACKGROUND: Circulating natriuretic peptide (NP) levels are markedly lower in healthy men than women. A relative NP deficiency in men could contribute to their higher risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Epidemiological studies suggest testosterone may contribute to sex-specific NP differences.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the effect of testosterone administration on NP levels using a randomized, placebo-controlled design.
METHODS: One hundred and fifty-one healthy men (20 to 50 years of age) received goserelin acetate to suppress endogenous production of gonadal ste

Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is a hormone, produced mainly by cardiomyocytes, with a major role in cardiovascular homeostatic mechanisms such as natriuresis and vasodilation, which serve to regulate blood pressure. However, ANP also acts as an autocrine/paracrine factor on other targets such as kidney, lung, thymus, liver and the immune system. ANP participates in the regulation of cell growth and proliferation, and evidence is accumulating that these effects are associated with the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In vascular cells and cardiomyocytes ANP stimulates the antioxi

The natriuretic peptides are a family of related hormones that play an important role in the homeostasis of cardiovascular system. Serum levels of brain natriuretic peptide have recently emerged as a marker for the diagnosis, prognosis, follow-up, and therapy of patients with heart failure (HF) and other cardiovascular diseases. Its diagnostic role is important in valvular heart diseases, such as in severe aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation, and in acute coronary syndromes, right ventricular dysfunction, and diastolic left ventricular dysfunction. The administration of recombinant brain
