Total navy recruit health: making our sailors fit for the fleet.

Naval Hospital Great Lakes, Branch Medical Clinic, Recruit Training Command is the Navy's only recruit inprocessing point in the country. The clinic will medically inprocess approximately 54,000 new Navy recruits this year. In fiscal year 1995, the clinic inprocessed approximately 44,000 recruits, 35,000 males and 9,000 females. The Navy Medical Department is very concerned about total Navy recruit health. Magazine 2026/3: Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine.

Dear Readers, Welcome to this year's third issue of the International Maritime Health Magazine. Every medical specialty has a history, but not every history is preserved. Hyperbaric medicine in Latin America did not emerge from a single institution or a single pioneering individual. Rather, it evolved through diverse national experiences that were shaped by geography, maritime traditions, military and civilian medicine, engineering, scientific curiosity, and the dedication of countless, often silent, professionals. The articles in this issue offer more than historical accounts of individual co

How do cardiologists see seafarers?

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally. Studies indicate a higher prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity, smoking, diabetes, hyperuricaemia, and lipid metabolism disorders among seafarers. The presented literature review highlights a significant gap in current data regarding the prevalence, clinical course, and prognosis of numerous cardiological conditions in this occupational group. The study focused primarily on coronary artery disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and arterial hypertension among seafarers. Recently, there has been a growin

[STUDY OF PROBLEM ASPECTS OF MANIFESTATION OF KINETOSIS IN CREW MEMBERS OF WATER VESSELS].

Motion sickness syndrome, or kinetosis, is a pathological reaction of the body to unusual movement. The most wellknown type of this condition is seasickness. During pitching and when changing body position, a person experiences irritation of the vestibular organ, visual analyzer and receptors of internal organs, which affects the proper performance of their production functions. Given the specifics of the work of seafarers, many shipowners are concerned about this problematic aspect. In this article, the author reveals the etymology of the concepts of «kinetosis», «motion sickness syndrome» an

Trends in the medical repatriation of Filipino seafarers: a ten year study of a Philippine maritime shipping company (OSM Maritime).

BACKGROUND: Seafarers, confronted with unique health challenges, occasionally necessitate medical repatriation. This study examines the trends in medical repatriation cases among Filipino seafarers employed by OSM Maritime shipping company over a 10-year period from 2013 to 2022. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records of OSM Maritime seafarers were reviewed, obtaining causes for and dates of medical repatriation. International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) was utilised to classify repatriation cases. Proportion of repatriation cases were calculated and their annual trends were analysed.

A statistical examination of three approaches for predicting motion sickness incidence.

This paper examines three approaches which have been suggested for predicting motion sickness incidence (MSI) for actual or simulated broadband ship motion. Although only a small amount of empirical MSI data exists for motion other than that produced by a single sinusoid, this data provides strong statistical evidence that two approaches based on single sinusoid models fail to produce accurate predictions. Statistical judgments about a least-squares weighting approach must be reserved until enough data exists to provide an adequate test. In view of these results, it must be concluded that much

Susceptibility to seasickness: influence of hull design and steaming direction.

Three sea going vessels steamed side by side through slight seas off the coast of Oahu, Hi. A 4-h octagon was transmitted twice each day for three consecutive days while motion sickness symptomatology was recorded from 18 enlisted men who alternated among the vessels. Dramatic differences in illness severity were obtained whether comparisons were made using objective evidence of vomiting episodes or subjective reporting of symptoms on questionnaires. Reliability of this scoring method was excellent (r = .95). In addition to face and construct validity, evidence is presented of the predictive v

Allergic rhinitis and aviation.

Allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, is a combination of symptoms that affects approximately 20% of the U.S. population. Symptoms include nasal congestion, sneezing, rhinorrhea, and sleep aberrations. Patients with mild or seasonal cases of allergic rhinitis are perfectly capable of performing adequately in the aviation field. At present, these people are grounded during symptomatic periods. This grounding is due to both Federal Air Regulations and Navy regulations which preclude flying with nasal congestion or with the use of medications. Current therapy of allergic rhinitis is based on the use o

[Medical care on board ship. Cruise-medical experiences].

Cruise medicine has general, tropical and industrial medical aspects. Surgery is less important than in former days. Ship doctors treat crew and passengers. Already the physician's presence gives security to the often old, sometimes sick tourists coming to cruise. Seasickness can be treated successfully in an active way.

[Development of modern medical doctors in Japan from late Edo to early Meiji].

Western medicine began to be introduced to Japan since late 16th century. Japanese encounter with Western medicine centered on Dejima in Nagasaki in the seventeenth and eighteenth century and the initial process of introduction was gradual and slow. In the mid-nineteenth century, facing threats from Western countries, Tokugawa bakufu asked Dutch naval surgeon, J. L. C. Pompe van Meerdervoort to teach western medicine at the Kaigun Denshujo naval academy in Nagasaki. The government also supported the western medical school in Edo. This paper deals with how modern western medical doctors were de

[Inadequate first medical aid on board a sea vessel as a risk factor for crew members' health].

Currently, one of the most important health and social problems in the world is the constant increase in injuries and deaths at work. Statistics show that timely provision of first aid to victims has a positive effect on further medical support and a reduction in the number of deaths. First aid for crew members of sea vessels is a set of simple medical actions performed by seafarers directly on board the ship, as soon as possible after an injury or illness. As a rule, it is associated with emergency resuscitation of the victim. The lack of necessary skills and training among current ship crew

Latent tuberculosis infection among sailors and civilians aboard U.S.S. Ronald Reagan--United States, January-July 2006.

Crews aboard ships live and work in crowded, enclosed spaces. Historically, large tuberculosis (TB) outbreaks and extensive transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis have occurred on U.S. Navy ships. On July 13, 2006, smear- and culture-positive, cavitary, pulmonary TB was diagnosed in a sailor aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Ronald Reagan; the patient, aged 32 years, had a negative human immunodeficiency virus test. The M. tuberculosis strain cultured was susceptible to all first-line TB medications. The sailor was born in the Philippines, had latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) diagnose
