BACKGROUND: The neonatal period is the time with the highest risk of neonatal and infant mortality. The COVID-19 pandemic diverted resources from routine maternal health services, which raises the possibility of neonatal near misses (NNMs). To implement prompt treatments that could improve the standard of infant care and lower neonatal mortality, it has been theorized that pinpointing the determinants of NNM during this outbreak is crucial. In light of this, the current study identified the determinants of NNM in neonates delivered in public hospitals of Ilu Abba Bor Zone, South West Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: A maternal near-miss is a situation in which a woman was on the verge of death but survived a life-threatening obstetric complication that happened during pregnancy, childbirth, or within 42 days after the pregnancy's termination. Survivors of near-miss events share several features with mothers who have died and identifying determinants of maternal near miss will aid in improving the capacity of the health system to reduce severe maternal morbidity and mortality. Therefore, this study was designed to identify determinants of maternal near miss incidents among women hospitalized to

An 18-year-old adolescent with intermittent colicky abdominal pain for 4 months was admitted to a Medical Emergency Assessment Unit for further investigation of possible colitis, after being reviewed by a surgeon in Accident and Emergency. Initially he was treated for a urinary tract infection, however a CT of the abdomen revealed appendicular perforation with pelvic abscess formation. The patient required an urgent laparoscopy and was discharged without complications. Typically, appendicitis is an acute surgical problem whereas chronic abdominal pain is routinely considered a medical problem.

BACKGROUND: Maternal near-miss is a serious public health concern in impoverished countries such as Ethiopia. Despite its huge burden, the prognostic predictive model of maternal near-miss has received little attention in research in the Ethiopian context. As a result, this study aimed to build and validate (internally) a clinical prediction model of maternal near-miss in Bahir Dar City, Northwest Ethiopia, in 2024.
METHODS: A prospective follow-up study was conducted among 2110 randomly selected pregnant women in Bahir Dar city between May 1, 2023, and March 6, 2024. Pregnant women with gest

BACKGROUND: Despite efforts, Uganda has not met the World Health Organization target of < 12 newborn deaths per 1,000 live births. Severe maternal morbidity or 'near miss' is a major contributor to adverse perinatal outcomes, particularly in low-resource settings. However, the specific impact of maternal near miss on perinatal outcomes in Uganda remains insufficiently investigated. We examined the association between maternal near miss and adverse perinatal outcomes at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) in southwestern Uganda.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study among wome

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: To study the causes of maternal near miss and compared maternal and perinatal outcome of maternal near miss cases with controls (women with potential life-threatening complication [PLTC]) and maternal death.
METHODS: Mothers (n = 100) who fulfilled the WHO criteria for maternal near miss (MNM) were identified and enrolled in the study. Two controls for each near miss case were taken. This included the women who had same PLTC but did not reach near miss within one week of enrollment. The comparison of maternal and fetal outcome was done between the two groups and with the m
