Injuries to the neck and upper extremities of dancers.

In general, injuries to dancers involving the cervical spine and upper extremities are quite mild and cause only limited disability. When such injuries do not involve specific elements of the musculoskeletal system, their origin may be in the more subtle neurovascular structures of the neck. The importance of a thorough examination is emphasized.

[Treatment of penetrating injuries of neck, chest and extremities].

Penetrating injuries such as gunshot wounds have traditionally been rare in Europe, with the result that European surgeons have only limited experience in their management. Socio-economic changes in the last decade have led to an increase in the frequency of injuries of this type, partly due to the expansion of organized crime and partly because of involvement of the European military in peace-keeping missions in Europe and elsewhere in the world. The purpose of this article is to offer some guidelines in the management of extremely serious or rarely encountered injuries to the neck, chest and

Penetrating injuries of the visceral compartment of the neck.

Penetrating injuries of the visceral compartment of the neck are uncommon but potentially life threatening. A retrospective review of patients who sustained penetrating trauma to the laryngotracheal complex was conducted at the Level I trauma center of the University of Louisville Hospital in Kentucky. Sixteen patients were identified and their records reviewed for type of injuries, treatment, complications, and 1-year follow-up. The majority of patients were men who sustained injuries that were violent in nature. Zone II of the anterior neck was the most commonly injured area, with the trache

Are arteriograms necessary in penetrating zone II neck injuries?

The evaluation and management of potential arterial injuries in penetrating neck trauma are controversial. Routine surgical exploration or arteriography can be very expensive and time-consuming and can overburden available resources if used in all patients. We reviewed the records of 4035 patients seen in our trauma center during a 20-month period and identified a total of 110 patients (2.7%) with penetrating wounds to zone II of the neck; 50 were from gunshot wounds, 43 from stab wounds, 7 from shotgun injuries, and 10 from lacerations. In 42 (39%) patients there was no arteriogram or surgery

[Non-fatal firearm injuries of the head and neck].

There is depicted the evolutive course of 6 men with gunshot wounds of the neck and head, fortunately not threatening their lives. All victims were men between 18 and 67 years of age. Three times the gun fired a single projectile, whereas the other 3 were multiple projectiles. The latter cases resulted in heavier damages. Etiologically the events were classified as: 3 cases as suspected murder, 2 as attempted suicide and in the last case, an accident. The management has been both medical and surgical under general anesthesia, in order to repair the disorders and/or remove the bullets in 5 occa

Selective management of penetrating neck injuries. A prospective study.

We assessed the feasibility of a selective policy for operative exploration of penetrating neck wounds. Patients with bleeding, hematomas, crepitations, dysphagia, dysphonia, or impaired mental status rendering their conditions nonevaluative had prompt explorations. All other patients were observed in the hospital. Of the 77 patients in this study, 48 (62%) underwent neck exploration based on the preceding criteria; (85%) had major injuries. Of the 29 patients observed according to protocol, none required subsequent exploration for a missed lesion. Ancillary diagnostic procedures in the observ

Parturitional injury of the head and neck.

Parturitional injuries refer to injuries sustained during and secondary to fetal delivery. The skull, brain, and head and neck regions are frequently involved. Accurate differentiation and classification of the various injuries is essential for treatment, prognosis, and parental counseling. In this review, we discuss the various "bumps and lumps" that maybe encountered along the neonatal skull as well as the most frequent calvarial and intracranial parturitional injuries. In addition, a short discussion of the most common head and neck, facial, and spinal lesions is included. Various mimickers

Outcome of 'whiplash' neck injury.

Psychological factors have been alleged to be important in the course and outcome of 'whiplash' neck injury but there is little quantitative evidence. This study uses quantitative methods involving a prospective interview assessment to describe psychological and quality of life predictors, and 3 and 12 month outcome. Consecutive attenders to the Accident and Emergency department of a teaching district hospital with a clinical diagnosis of 'whiplash' neck injury were included and there were follow-up interviews at home. Neck symptoms were recorded, and there was a standard mental-state intervie

Prehospital Management of Penetrating Neck Injuries: An Evaluation of Practice.

OBJECTIVE: Penetrating neck injuries (PNIs) can occur at multiple anatomic sites and involve airway, nerve, vascular, and gastrointestinal structures. They pose a unique challenge to clinicians, especially in the prehospital setting. Published guidance on the prehospital management of PNIs is limited, and there is no review of the current prehospital practice. METHODS: A retrospective electronic case note review of PNIs managed within 1 UK helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) over a 7-year period was undertaken. Data were collected on the zone of injury, mechanism of injury, prehospita

Non-accidental head and neck injuries in children and adolescents.

Child abuse or maltreatment has been a global problem and research shows that more than half of the cases present with head and neck injuries. This study aimed to propose an online referencing platform for dental professionals to know more about signs of child abuse and neglect (CAN) and how suspicious head and neck injuries might look like in real-life scenarios by proposing a 3D design. The study was divided into two parts: i) Integrative literature review, ii) Survey. The first part included an integrative literature review to check if there are enough publications by dentists containing re

Contact sport related head and neck injuries in pediatric athletes.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the type and frequency of sports related pediatric head and neck trauma. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was searched for football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse and ice hockey related facial injuries. Cross-sectional analysis of incidence, age, and sex and specific injury diagnoses, mechanisms, and facial locations were performed. We focused on craniofacial and soft tissue injuries and excluded patients with concussion or other neurological injuries. RESULTS: A total of 24,905 cases were identified in the NEISS database, correspondi

Reconstruction of animal bite injuries to the head and neck.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim if this review is to provide an update on the existing literature of animal bite treatment strategies and provide a systematic approach to animal bites from presentation to reconstruction. RECENT FINDINGS: Dog bites cause 80-90% of animal bites with 26.8-56.5% occurring in the head and neck. Infection rates may be as low as 5.7-9.7%. Primary closure alone is sufficient in 69.8% of dog bites within the first 24 h. SUMMARY: Animal bite injuries to the head and neck are common, especially in the younger population. Dogs cause a majority of these bite injuries. Injurie

Head, face and neck camel-related injuries: Biomechanics and severity.

INTRODUCTION: Large animal-related human injuries are associated with high morbidity and mortality. There are no studies on biomechanics of the camel-related head, face, and neck (HFN) injuries. We aimed to study the mechanism, anatomical distribution and severity of camel-related HFN injuries. METHODS: We analyzed our prospectively collected data of patients who were admitted to Al Ain Hospital with camel-related HFN injury during the period of October 2001 to January 2010. RESULTS: Seventy-three patients were studied; all were males having a median (range) age of 28 (5-89) years. Camel kic

Nontraumatic head and neck injuries: a clinical approach. Part 2.

Nontraumatic emergencies of the head and neck represent a challenge in the field of neuroradiology for two reasons. As explained in the first part of this update, these entities affect an area where the thorax joins the cranial cavity and can thus compromise both structures; second, they are uncommon, so they are not well known. Maintaining the same approach as in the first part, focusing on the clinical presentations in the emergency department rather than on the anatomic regions affected, we will study the entities that present with two patterns: those that present with a combination of cerv

Pediatric head and neck injuries due to golf cart trauma.

INTRODUCTION: Golf carts are increasingly used off the golf course and are often viewed as innocuous modes of transportation. However, research has shown they can cause significant injuries, particularly to children. OBJECTIVES: Analyze golf cart related head and neck injuries in children and adults from a national database. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was queried for golf cart injuries. The NEISS tracks consumer product related injuries from a sampling of approximately 100 emergency departments across the United States. Age, general diagnosis (concuss

Management of penetrating neck injuries at a London trauma centre.

Penetrating neck injuries (PNIs) are uncommon in the UK. The majority of guidelines are from the USA or South Africa. No UK national guidelines exist. Increasing urban violence in the UK has lead to an increase in PNIs. There is a need to develop a PNI guideline that reflects the pathology and experience in the UK. A retrospective review of all PNIs managed at St George's Hospital over an 18 month period was undertaken. Data collected included patient demographics, mechanism of injury, investigations, multidisciplinary team involvement and management. Clinical activity data was correlated to c

[Penetrating injuries of the neck: review of 16 operated cases].

BACKGROUND: Cervical lesions from penetrating trauma in the neck are increasing together with other types of trauma especially in big towns. Nevertheless in Italy a Register of Trauma is still lacking and no guidelines are available. Conservative management is also advocated and is still under discussion. Comparison of diagnostic tools and evaluation of different treatments in case of vascular damage is also expected. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A series of 16 penetrating lesions of the neck including various degrees of severity were treated over a span of 5 year. The penetrating trauma was due to
