BACKGROUND: Trigger point (TrPs) identification has become the mainstay of diagnosis for the treatment of Myofascial Pain Syndrome; however, manual pressure (MP) to identify TrPs by determining low-pressure pain threshold has low interrater reliability and may lack validity since it is done on inactive muscles. To elicit contractions and mimic an active muscle or movement that "causes" pain, a Muscle Pain Detection Device (MPDD) has been developed. A selected muscle is stimulated and painful muscles are precisely detected, allowing distinctions between primary and referred muscle pain as well

AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects that an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury of the knee has on postural control and activity of neck, head and trunk muscles in order to investigate the existence of connections between the masticatory system and body posture.
METHODS: Surface electromyographic (sEMG) activity of the muscles and their asymmetry index, at mandibular rest position, and during maximal voluntary clenching (MVC), and posturometric and stabilometric measurements of 25 patients (mean age 28+/-9 years) having undergone ACL injury of the left knee were compared

OBJECTIVE: To compare the mobility of neck and back flexor and extensor muscle chains in women with migraine, chronic migraine and headache-free.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study. The muscle chain test was performed based on the theoretical assumptions of the Busquet method, in women with migraine (MG, n = 24), chronic migraine (CMG, n = 36) and headache-free (CG, n = 27). The evaluation of neck and back mobility was performed by an examiner expert in the Busquet method with the aid of cervical range of motion (CROM®) device (neck muscles) and the Tiltmeter® application (back muscles)

BACKGROUND: Most migraine patients report neck pain as part of their migraine symptomatology, but it is unknown whether triggering neck pain would induce migraine attacks. Our aim was to assess the occurrence of headache and/or neck pain after an endurance test of the neck muscles among migraineurs and controls.
METHODS: Sixty-five patients with migraine and 32 headache-free participants underwent a manual examination of the cervical spine by an assessor blinded towards the diagnosis and were sub-classified according to the appearance or absence of neck pain. Subsequently, the endurance of th

The serratus muscle (SAM) can be raised as an isolated muscular or osteomuscular flap on its nutrient vessels or in combination with a latissimus dorsi (LD) myocutaneous flap on the thoracodorsal pedicle for various reconstructive purposes. The aim of the present is to report on the results achieved after the use of the SAM alone (n = 7) and in combination with an LD (n = 3) after tumor resection or osteoradionecrosis (ORN) in ten patients with defects of the head and neck. One flap was lost due to venous thrombosis. The donor site morbidity was minimal. Emphasis is given on a new indication,

Pectoralis major muscle flaps have rarely been used on their own for head and neck reconstruction. Some of the problems experienced with myocutaneous flaps can be avoided by the judicious use of muscle flaps. These include suture line separation, excessive bulk, hair growth from the flap, and alteration of breast position. In contrast to the pectoralis major myocutaneous flap, the pectoralis major muscle flap is light and pliable. When it is employed for reconstruction in the oral cavity, oropharynx, or hypopharynx, it can be covered by a "quilted" skin graft or used on its own. We believe tha

Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is a functional voice disorder commonly treated with voice therapy. However, the role of physiotherapy-specifically dry needling (DN)-has not been explored in the literature. This case report describes a 40-year-old male with persistent vocal fatigue, hoarseness, and anterior neck tightness associated with MTD. He underwent three sessions of DN targeting the anterior neck muscles. Outcome measures included the Voice Handicap Index (VHI), which improved from 73 to 54, and the Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) score, which improved from 37 to 24. The patient a

BACKGROUND: Rugby is a high-contact sport with a significant injury risk, particularly cervical spine trauma. The repeated mechanical overload can contribute to long-term cervical dysfunctions. Surface electromyography (sEMG) and inertial sensors (IMU) offer valuable insights into neuromuscular function.
METHODS: This observational cross-sectional study followed STROBE guidelines. We included male professional rugby players with at least two years of experience. An anamnestic assessment was performed to collect data on previous injuries; sEMG was applied to the sternocleidomastoid and cervica

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Sarcopenia is a well-recognized risk factor for adverse outcomes in neoplastic diseases, and body composition assessment using computed tomography is a standard method for its evaluation. Radiomics, an automated and quantitative image-analysis approach that has demonstrated prognostic value in various clinical contexts, has not yet been applied to the assessment of axial musculature for outcome prediction in head and neck cancers. The primary aim of this study was to investigate whether radiomic analysis of the paravertebral muscles on computed tomography imaging could impro

This technical note describes a novel approach to reconstructing soft tissue in the head and neck region by diverting a flap originally intended for hard tissue reconstruction. We present a case of a 79-year-old woman with a large tumor on the left side of the mobile tongue, where the use of a radial free flap was challenging. Instead, we used the muscular portion of the iliac crest as a reliable alternative for reconstruction, offering a suitable oral lining. Using a muscular free flap, we achieved effective tongue reconstruction while minimizing donor site morbidity. The deep circumflex ilia

BACKGROUND: Reliable measurements are needed to study the dysfunction of the neck muscles. The aim of this study was to determine the intra-tester repeatability of EMG and isometric force measurements of the neck muscles in adolescents with headache and headache-free controls.
METHODS: A group of 30 adolescents with migraine-type headache, 29 with tension-type headache, and 30 headache-free controls were recruited. Maximal isometric neck muscle force with simultaneous recording of surface EMG from the cervical erector spinae and the sternocleidomastoideus muscles was measured twice during one

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related sarcopenia (CRS) is a significant complication of head and neck carcinoma (HNC), characterised by muscle degeneration and poor clinical outcomes. Although various dietary and therapeutic interventions have been explored, most of them remain empirical, and the molecular mechanisms underlying CRS are not yet fully understood.
METHODS: Transcription profiles of muscle fragments from 29 HNC patients and 8 control donors were analysed by bulk RNA sequencing (6/29 and 3/8) and/or RT-qPCR (29/29 and 5/8). In parallel, differentiating human myoblasts (AB1190) were subjected

OBJECTIVE: People with movement disabilities face difficulties in independent mobility. The main objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a real-time electro-myography (EMG) based wheelchair control framework with upper arm or neck muscles and to investigate feasibility for assistive mobility applications.
METHODS: A feature optimisation framework was employed to extract the most significant features for movement recognition. The proposed model was trained and tested in both offline and real-time control. Feasibility was assessed through classification accuracy, repeatability measu

Trunk and head muscles originate from distinct embryonic regions: while the trunk muscles derive from the paraxial mesoderm that becomes segmented into somites, the majority of head muscles develops from the unsegmented cranial paraxial mesoderm. Differences in the molecular control of trunk versus head and neck muscles have been discovered about 25 years ago; interestingly, differences in satellite cell subpopulations were also described more recently. Specifically, the satellite cells of the facial expression muscles share properties with heart muscle. In adult vertebrates, neck muscles span

Radio-induced pharyngolaryngeal chronic disorders may challenge the quality of life of head and neck cancer long survivors. Many anatomic structures have been identified as potentially impaired by irradiation and responsible for laryngeal edema, dysphonia and dysphagia. Some dose constraints might be plausible such as keeping the mean dose to the pharyngeal constrictor muscles under 50 to 55Gy, the mean dose to the supra-glottic larynx under 40 to 45Gy and, if feasible, the mean dose to the glottic larynx under 20Gy. A reduction of the dose delivered to the muscles of the floor of the mouth an

PURPOSE: The neck extensor muscles contribute to spinal support and posture while performing head and neck motion. Muscle stiffness relates to passive elasticity (support) and active tensioning (posture and movement) of muscle. It was hypothesized that support and motion requirements are reflected in the distribution of stiffness between superficial and deep neck extensor muscles.
METHODS: In ten healthy participants, shear modulus (stiffness) of five neck extensor muscles was determined in prone at rest and during isometric head lift at three intensities using shear wave elastography.

Subjects with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) have been found to have clinical signs and symptoms of cervical dysfunction. Although many studies have investigated the relationship between the cervical spine and TMD, no study has evaluated the endurance capacity of the cervical muscles in patients with TMD. Thus the objective of this study was to determine whether patients with TMD had a reduced endurance of the cervical flexor muscles at any level of muscular contraction when compared with healthy subjects. One hundred and forty-nine participants provided data for this study (49 subjects we
