[Report of a case of glucagonoma misdiagnosed as "eczema" and "hepatic angioma" for three years and review of literature].

Glucagonoma is a rare pancreatic tumor, necrolytic migratory erythema is its distinctive feature and it is often associated with diabetes mellitus, weight loss, anemia, hypoaminoacidemia, glossitis and stomatitis. We reported a case of glucagonoma misdiagnosed as "eczema" and "benign hepatic anginoma" for 3 years. His blood glucagon level was 1,758 ng/L. The results of abdominal B-mode ultrasonography and CT scan were negative, but selected arteriogram showed a tumor mass between the pancreatic body and tail. Before operation, treatment with octreotide and supply of amino acids were given with

Exfoliative erythema of malnutrition with zinc and essential amino acid deficiency.

We present a patient with a desquamating predominantly flexural erythema and glossitis due to a combination of alcoholism, zinc deficiency and amino acid deficiency. A similar clinical picture to necrolytic migratory erythema can be seen with zinc deficiency or protein malnutrition, often in patients with alcoholic liver disease, in the absence of glucagonoma. The speed of clinical improvement following zinc replacement therapy, usually within days to weeks, is striking, confirming the clinical diagnosis.

Life-threatening paraneoplastic cutaneous syndromes.

Paraneoplastic syndromes are diseases or symptom complexes associated with malignancy, usually internal. In dermatology, we modify the definition to refer to dermatoses associated with internal malignancy. In this article, we discuss the link between malignancy and such dermatologic disorders as acanthosis nigricans, acrokeratosis paraneoplastica of Bazex, dermatomyositis, erythema gyratum repens, necrolytic migratory erythema (glucagonoma syndrome), and paraneoplastic pemphigus and discuss, where such information is known, the mechanism by which these paraneoplastic diseases occur.

Cutaneous signs of internal malignancies.

The more common paraneoplastic skin changes associated with internal malignancies (acanthosis nigricans, dermatomyositis, secondary ichthyosis) are discussed. The rare glucagonoma syndrome, consisting of alpha cell tumor of the pancreas, migratory necrolytic erythema, and diabetes mellitus, is described. The importance of recognition of these skin lesions may lead to early detection of the underlying cancer with possible cure.

[Acquired zinc deficiency mimicking glucagonoma dermatitis. Histology and electron microscopy].

A 47-year-old man suffering from colitis ulcerosa developed serious anaemia, oedema, stomatitis with burning tongue, dry skin and erosive lesions with peripheral spreading on the ankles. Histology and electron microscopy showed characteristic signs for necrolytic migratory erythema, zinc deficiency acrodermatitis, or pellagra. Decreased serum zinc level and response to oral zinc substitution finally proved the diagnosis of acquired zinc deficiency.

The glucagonoma syndrome.

The glucagonoma syndrome is characterized by necrolytic migratory erythema, glossitis, ungual dystrophy, diabetes mellitus, anemia, weight loss, elevated plasma glucagon levels and an alpha-cell glucagon-secreting neoplasm of the pancreas. We are reporting a case of this syndrome in a middle-aged woman, in whom the first complaints and signs were cutaneous. The recognition of the distinctive skin manifestations of the syndrome led to early diagnosis and treatment of the underlying malignant pancreatic tumor.

Autophagy in malnutrition-associated dermatoses.

Malnutrition-associated dermatoses including necrolytic migratory erythema (NME) and pellagra share common clinicopathological features; in particular, necrolytic changes in the upper epidermis. Here, we report the involvement of autophagy in the development of necrolysis in three patients with malnutrition-associated dermatoses. First, we examined an autophagy-specific molecule, microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 (LC3), using a monoclonal antibody. LC3 was strongly expressed in the granular layers of the active border, and less intensely observed in the perilesional areas. Little LC

Trace element zinc and skin disorders.

Zinc is a necessary trace element and an important constituent of proteins and other biological molecules. It has many biological functions, including antioxidant, skin and mucous membrane integrity maintenance, and the promotion of various enzymatic and transcriptional responses. The skin contains the third most zinc in the organism. Zinc deficiency can lead to a range of skin diseases. Except for acrodermatitis enteropathic, a rare genetic zinc deficiency, it has also been reported in other diseases. In recent years, zinc supplementation has been widely used for various skin conditions, incl

Paraneoplastic cutaneous manifestations: concepts and updates.

The skin often signals systemic changes. Some neoplastic diseases that affect internal organs may trigger several cutaneous manifestations. Although these dermatoses are relatively unusual, the recognition of some typical paraneoplastic dermatoses may lead to the early diagnosis of a neoplasm and determine a better prognosis. In this review article, we discuss the paraneoplastic cutaneous manifestations strongly associated with neoplasms, which include acanthosis nigricans maligna, tripe palms, erythema gyratum repens, Bazex syndrome, acquired hypertrichosis lanuginosa, necrolytic migratory er

Dermatitis, glossitis, stomatitis, cheilitis, anemia and weight loss: a classic presentation of pancreatic glucagonoma.

Glucagonomas are rare tumors. They are predominantly located in the body or tail of the pancreas and display a constellation of signs and symptoms referred to as glucagonoma syndrome. The term necrolytic migratory erythema is used to characterize the distinctive rash associated with this syndrome. This report describes a classic presentation consisting of dermatitis, glossitis, stomatitis, angular cheilitis, anemia, and weight loss that was associated with the finding of a pancreatic mass and a markedly elevated plasma glucagon level. After pancreatic resection, the patient had complete resolu

Glucagonoma syndrome: case report and literature review.

The glucagonoma syndrome is characterized by dermatitis, glucose intolerance, hypoaminoacidemia, and hyperglucagonemia secondary to an alpha-cell tumor of the pancreas. Other clinical features include anemia, glossitis, and weight loss. A 62-year-old woman with the syndrome sought medical attention for a chronic dermatitis. A skin biopsy was suggestive of necrolytic migratory erythema. A glucagonoma was surgically removed from the tail of the pancreas. Review of the literature indicates that 56 proven and 33 probable cases of glucagonoma syndrome have been reported.

Approach to the patient with primary hyperglucagonemia.

Glucagonomas are a rare hormone-producing pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (panNET), with an estimated incidence of 1 to 2 cases per million persons. They typically present at diagnosis as large, metastatic panNET and are characterized clinically by diabetes mellitus, weight loss, thromboembolic complications and necrolytic migratory erythema. The diagnosis of glucagonoma syndrome requires the presence of both elevated fasting plasma glucagon levels and glucagonoma symptoms. Staging relies on cross-sectional imaging with computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), complemented

Skin manifestations of pancreatic diseases.

Although symptoms of pancreatic diseases such as pancreatitis, acute and chronic and, carcinoma of the pancreas are mainly gastrointestinal in nature, the extra-pancreatic symptoms are also important. These include skin symptoms, such as pancreatic panniculitis, acanthosis nigricans, livedo reticularis, necrolytic migratory erythema, cutaneous signs of hemorrhage, as in persons with severe acute pancreatitis, or the finding of cutaneous metastases of pancreatic carcinoma, which may be a sign of advanced disease. The pancreas is therefore one of those organs for which diagnosis and therapy are

[Hepatitis C virus-associated dermatoses: a review].

Acute infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is often clinically inapparent, but may affect several organ systems in its chronic course. In dermatology, common diseases such as lichen planus, cryoglobulinemic vasculitis and porphyria cutanea tarda have been described in association with HCV infection. A number of other dermatologic disorders, e.g., psoriasis, chronic urticaria, chronic pruritus, pseudo-kaposi sarcoma, necrolytic migratory erythema and Behçet disease, have been associated in case reports with HCV-induced liver disease. In this study we summarize the recent literature reports, p

Pellagra and pellagralike dermatoses: etiology, differential diagnosis, dermatopathology, and treatment.

Clinical pellagra is a multiple vitamin-deficiency disease. The clinical manifestations include dermatitis, diarrhea, and dementia; the result is often death. Photosensitivity has also been associated with pellagra. Other clinical findings may depend on the nutritional status of the patient. Pellagrins may not have specific cutaneous pathological findings, although necrolytic migratory erythema has been reported in clinical pellagra. Most pellagrins respond to niacin combined with a high-protein diet, although other concomitant vitamin deficiencies may prevent the use of niacin. Clinical pella

Glucagonoma syndrome with serous oligocystic adenoma: A rare case report.

RATIONALE: Glucagonoma and pancreatic serous oligocystic adenoma (SOA) are rare neuroendocrine and exocrine tumors of the pancreas, respectively. The coexistence of glucagonoma syndrome (GS) and SOA is a rare clinical condition and has not yet been reported. Additionally, necrolytic migratory erythema (NME), a hallmark clinical sign of GS, is often misdiagnosed as other skin lesions by clinicians due to their lack of related knowledge, which delays diagnosis of GS and thus exacerbates the prognosis. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 50-year-old male patient was admitted to our department because he present

Glucagonoma syndrome: a case report.

Glucagonoma is a very rare islet cell tumor of the pancreas. We present a case of pancreatic tail tumor with the typical glucagonoma syndrome of necrolytic migratory erythema (NME), diabetes mellitus (DM), anemia, weight loss and glossitis. After complete resection of the pancreatic tumor, the glucagonoma syndrome subsided. In reviewing 120 cases of glucagonoma in the literature, the average tumor diameter was 3.6 cm. Most (68.1%) of the tumors occurred in the pancreatic tail. Two-thirds of the reported glucagonomas were malignant and 53.5% metastasized to other organs. The curative resection

Hepatic Glucagonoma in a Post-bariatric Female Patient: A Case Report.

Glucagonomas, neuroendocrine tumors originating from the pancreas marked by excessive glucagon secretion, present a diagnostic challenge due to their rarity and diverse symptomatology. In this report, we present a 47-year-old female with a history of bariatric surgery, diabetes mellitus, and deep vein thrombosis who exhibited weight loss, anemia, migratory necrolytic erythema on the lower limbs and groin, and fecal incontinence. Imaging revealed liver secondary lesions without an identifiable primary tumor. After undergoing surgery, a pathologic examination of the excised tissue confirmed that

Cystic glucagonoma: A rare variant of an uncommon neuroendocrine pancreas tumor.

Glucagon-producing neuroendocrine tumors typically present with a characteristic constellation of symptoms including necrolytic migratory erythema, non-insulin-dependent diabetes, weight loss, anemia, glossitis, and an increased thrombotic tendency. Most glucagonomas are solid and arise in the body or tail of the pancreas. We report two cases of cystic glucagonoma, one found incidentally in an asymptomatic patient and one in a patient with weight loss and diabetes but no rash. In the first patient, distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy were curative, whereas the second patient continued to exh
