HIV epidemic among drug users in China: 1995-2011.

AIM: To describe trends in the HIV epidemic among drug users (DUs) in China from 1995 to 2011. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Data sets from China's national HIV/AIDS case reporting and sentinel surveillance systems as of December 2011 were used separately for descriptive analysis. MEASURES: Changes in the geographic distribution of the number of HIV cases and HIV prevalence among injecting drug users (IDUs) and non-IDUs were examined. We also analysed changes in HIV prevalence among the broader DU population, and drug use-related behaviours including types of drugs used, recent injecting

The dynamics of the human immunodeficiency virus epidemics in the south of Brazil: increasing role of injection drug users.

Changes in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among injection drug users (IDUs) are provoking a shift in the pattern of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in some regions of Brazil. IDUs living in 2 cities (Porto Alegre and Itajaí) in southern Brazil were contacted, interviewed, and tested for HIV. In 1998, 187 IDUs were surveyed and, in 2000, 352 IDUs. In Porto Alegre, HIV seroprevalence, age, and duration of injection history increased significantly over time. In contrast, a trend toward decline was observed in Itajaí. Homelessness, joblessness, and prison incarceration, as well as lifetime nee

People Living With HIV in St. Petersburg, Russia: Gender and Exposure Group Differences in HIV Care Engagement, Psychosocial Health, Substance Use, and Transmission Risk Behavior.

This study examined psychosocial and health needs of persons living with HIV (PLWH) in Russia. The study combined baseline datasets from two social network samples of PLWH in St. Petersburg (N = 872). Samples were recruited between 2014 and 2018 by enrolling a PLWH seed who was either out-of-care or treatment nonadherent as well as network members surrounding each seed, assessing each participant's HIV care, transmission risk, substance use, and mental health characteristics. Almost one-quarter of participants said they were never offered antiretroviral therapy (ART), and-among those offered A

HIV and women in Hawaii: risk and protective factors in HIV/AIDS prevention.

Using semi-structured interviews with adults living with or at-risk for HIV and interviews and focus groups with key informants, the present study examined risk for HIV transmission among women living in Hawaii. Key research findings suggest that women in Hawaii are at risk for HIV infection primarily through sexual contact with their male sex partners, including bisexual and injection drug using (IDU) men. A significant factor in women's HIV risk is sex and gender role dynamics in the context of their relationships with men. Recommendations support primary prevention services for HIV-positive

[Intravenous drug users and the HIV epidemic].

Data are taken from a study of 1,765 arrested intravenous drug users at the Oslo Central Police Station. Intravenous drug users in Oslo seem to get themselves tested for HIV regularly. In 1990-91 the average number of HIV-tests was 5.3, and the time since last test was, an average, between eight and nine months. Most intravenous drug users do not share needles and syringes. The most important source of needles and syringes in Oslo is an ambulant bus which can be found in city centre at night. HIV-seropositive drug users seem to have more regular contact with treatment programmes than those who

Analysis of a Targeted Intervention Programme on the Risk Behaviours of Injecting Drug Users in India: Evidence From the National Integrated Biological and Behavioural Surveillance Survey.

OBJECTIVES: This study provides insights on the impact of a targeted intervention (TI) programme on behaviour change among injecting drug users (IDUs) in India. METHODS: This paper examined the data from the Integrated Biological and Behavioural Surveillance 2014-2015 for IDUs in India. Logistic regression was performed to understand the factors (TI programme services) that affected injecting risk behaviours by adjusting for covariates. Propensity score matching was conducted to understand the impact of the TI programme on using new needles/syringes and sharing needles/syringes in the most re

Multicity HIV seroprevalence in street youth, Ukraine.

We conducted the first systematic, community-based, multicity assessment outside the USA of HIV seroprevalence, risk factors and linkage into clinical services among 929 street youth. After city-wide mapping, we used time-location sampling and randomly selected 74 venues in Odesa, Kyiv and Donetsk, Ukraine. Rapid HIV testing with post-test counselling was offered to all eligible youths aged 15-24 years. Overall, 18.4% (95% confidence interval 16.2-20.2) were HIV positive and 85% had previously unknown status. Rates were identical by sex. Subgroups with highest rates included orphans (26%), you

Higher HCV antibody prevalence among Indigenous clients of needle and syringe programs.

OBJECTIVE: To compare prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody and associated risk behaviours among Indigenous and non-Indigenous participants in the Australian Needle and Syringe Program Survey. METHODS: During 1 or 2 weeks each October from 1998 to 2008, clients of participating needle and syringe programs (NSPs) completed a self-administered questionnaire on demographics and risk behaviour and provided a capillary blood sample for HIV and HCV antibody testing. After de-duplication, 16,132 individuals participated during the 11 years, of whom 1,380 (8.6%) identified as Indigenous. RE

Legal space for syringe exchange programs in hot spots of injection drug use-related crime.

BACKGROUND: Copious evidence indicates that syringe exchange programs (SEPs) are effective structural interventions for HIV prevention among persons who inject drugs (PWID). The efficacy of SEPs in supporting the public health needs of PWID populations is partially dependent on their accessibility and consistent utilization among injectors. Research has shown that SEP access is an important predictor of PWID retention at SEPs, yet policies exist that may limit the geographic areas where SEP operations may legally occur. Since 2000 in the District of Columbia (DC), SEP operations have been subj

Psychological dysfunction and HIV/AIDS risk behavior.

The relationship between psychological problems and human immunodeficiency virus HIV/AIDS risk-taking behaviors was examined among 834 daily opioid users entering methadone treatment programs. A composite measure of psychological dysfunction was created using depression, anxiety, and hostility scales. This measure was found to be significantly related to needle risk in terms of injecting with used equipment, sharing of drug paraphernalia, and sharing with strangers. Psychological dysfunction was also related to sexual risk taking in terms of number of partners, unprotected sex with other injec

Factors associated with sharing equipment among people who inject drugs: The role of community attachment in harm reduction and health promotion.

INTRODUCTION: Sharing injecting equipment is a major route of transmission for blood borne viruses such as hepatitis C and HIV. Although needle and syringe programs are widely available throughout metropolitan Australia, rates of sharing equipment have not significantly changed in recent years. This study aimed to identify factors associated with recent equipment sharing among people who inject drugs in Australia. METHODS: A paper-based survey was distributed via peer-based organisations between June and November 2018 and was completed by 603 participants. Survey questions addressed recent in

[Psychosocial determinants of drug users to use a new syringe].

BACKGROUND: A limited number of injection drug users are hard to reach through needle-exchange programs. They obtain their injection material from drug-using peers. This dependence on others can make them more at risk of contracting HIV through sharing non-sterile syringes. The aim of this study is to identify determinants of the intention to systematically resort to use of a new syringe by injection drug users rarely or never involved in needle-exchange programs in Quebec. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Québec city by means of a questionnaire measuring variables from the

Knowledge and practices among injecting-drug users of bleach use for equipment disinfection--New York City, 1993.

Sharing (i.e., multiperson use) of drug-injection equipment among injecting-drug users (IDUs) is a major risk factor in the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other bloodborne pathogens. Abstaining from injection of drugs eliminates this risk; disinfection of needles and syringes with household bleach can reduce this risk. Because studies suggest the effectiveness of bleach disinfection may be limited, the March 1993 National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Community Alert Bulletin included recommendations that IDUs who do not stop injecting and sharing injection equipment u

A review of drug policy in the Golden Crescent: towards the development of more effective solutions.

There is a high prevalence of drug trafficking and misuse in Asia. Drugs grown in Afghanistan are trafficked through Iran and Pakistan to the rest of the world. This has led to an increase in the prevalence of drug use disorders in these regions, especially heroin. This has in turn led to an increase in the use of syringes and syringe sharing which has resulted in the exponential spread of blood borne diseases such as HIV/AIDS. A lack of awareness of the detrimental use of heroin, syringe sharing and the concept of HIV has been revealed. The literature reviewed provides evidence for a change i

Effect of an Unsanctioned Safe Consumption Site in the United States on Syringe Sharing, Rushed Injections, and Isolated Injection Drug Use: A Longitudinal Cohort Analysis.

BACKGROUND: HIV and other medical complications of drug use, including overdose, are rising among people who inject drugs in the United States (US). Risk of complications and mortality increase with injection behaviors such as syringe sharing, rushing injections, and injecting in isolated places. Studies suggest safe consumption sites (SCS) reduce high-risk injection behaviors by offering sterile syringes and a safe, supervised space to consume drugs, although this has yet to be evaluated in the US. SETTING: An unsanctioned SCS in an undisclosed US location. METHODS: From 2018 to 2019, we re

[Heroin].

Heroin (or diacetylmorphine), a depressant nervous central system, is a semi-synthetic opiate. Its main adverse effect, respiratory depression, can lead to death, especially after an intravenous injection. By loss of tolerance, an overdose can be lethal following heroin use after a period of abstinence (voluntary or not). Mortality rate among heroin users is between 1 and 3%. Addiction, following a regular and continuous use, occurs in less than a quarter of persons who ever tried heroine. Heroin addicts often present with different problems (for instance, a criminal behaviour), without any ob

Prevalence of HIV and other infections and injection behaviours among people who inject drugs in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia is one of the sub-Saharan African countries most affected by HIV/AIDS. However, the country lacks data describing the extent of the epidemic among people who inject drugs (PWID). Thus, a bio-behavioural study was conducted in 2015 to generate strategic information on the magnitude of HIV, hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), syphilis and related risk behaviours among PWID in Addis Ababa. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using respondent-driven sampling was conducted among people reported to have injected illicit drugs within 6 months before the study. Males a

Risk behaviors and risk factors for HIV infection among participants in the Bangkok tenofovir study, an HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis trial among people who inject drugs.

INTRODUCTION: HIV spread rapidly among people who inject drugs in Bangkok in the late 1980s. In recent years, changes in drug use and HIV-associated risk behaviors have been reported. We examined data from the Bangkok Tenofovir Study, an HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis trial conducted among people who inject drugs, to assess participant risk behavior and drug use, and to identify risk factors for HIV infection. METHODS: The Bangkok Tenofovir Study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. HIV status was assessed monthly and risk behavior every 3 months. We used generalized estima
