Lymphatic Dissemination and Axillary Web Syndrome in Primary Cutaneous Tuberculosis Secondary to Needlestick Injury.

Cutaneous tuberculosis secondary to skin inoculation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is uncommon but it can occur in the health care settings. Herein, we report an unusual case of primary cutaneous tuberculosis of the thumb following a needlestick injury. The infection progressed with a necrotic granuloma, lymphatic dysfunction as visualized by near-infrared fluorescence lymphatic imaging, and the development of an axillary web syndrome.

Needlestick distal nerve injury in rats models symptoms of complex regional pain syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)-I consists of chronic limb pain and dysautonomia triggered by traumas that sometime seem too trivial to be causative. Several pathological studies have identified minor distal nerve injuries (DNIs) in CRPS-I patients, but retrospective studies cannot establish causality. Therefore, we, prospectively investigated whether DNIs are sufficient to cause CRPS-like abnormalities in animals. We used needlestick, a cause of human CRPS, to evaluate lesion-size effects. METHODS: Left tibial nerves of male Sprague-Dawley rats were transfixed once by 30G,

Knowledge, attitude and practice regarding risk of HIV infection through accidental needlestick injuries among dental students of Raichur, India.

BACKGROUND: Injuries from occupational accidents are associ-ated with agents of biological risk, as they are the gateway to serious and potentially lethal infectious diseases that can be spread by contact between people. Several studies have demonstrated that dental students are among the most vulnerable to blood-borne exposure. OBJECTIVES: To assess the knowledge, attitude and practice regarding risk of HIV transmission through accidental needlestick injury amongst dental students and providing supportive and proper guidelines regarding needlestick injuries and HIV infection. Occupational Health: Analysis of the Psychological Impact of Exposure to Needlestick and Sharps Injuries Among Primary Health Care Professionals.

Occupational exposure to biological material, particularly needlestick and sharps injuries, is a relevant public health concern in Primary Health Care (PHC), as it combines infectious risk with psychological sequelae that are often underestimated. This study aimed to analyze the occurrence of needlestick and sharps injuries and their psychological impact among PHC professionals, considering biosafety knowledge, vaccination status, postexposure conduct, and perceived availability of psychological support. This was a descriptive, exploratory, mixed-methods study conducted in a medium-sized munic

The effect of devices used to reduce the risk of blood spillage or needlestick injury on the flow of intravenous infusion systems.

We evaluated the effect of two devices used to reduce needlestick injury and blood spillage on the flow of saline, polygeline and blood through intravenous infusion equipment and their effects on methods of increasing flow. The devices studied all reduced flow compared with control. The reductions were less for the reflux valve (< or = 9%) and greater for the anaesthesia extension set (< or = 59%), with little further reduction in flow when both were used in series (< or = 60%). Reductions in flow increased with increasing viscosity of the fluid infused, being greatest with blood. The flow red

Use of polymerase chain reaction for early detection and management of hepatitis C virus infection after needlestick injury.

Infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a matter of great concern because of its potentially grave consequences. Instead of relying on the conventional anti-HCV antibody test to detect HCV infection after needlestick incidents, we used the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to achieve earlier detection, to manage a patient more effectively, and to exclude possible infection more quickly. Fourteen incidents were studied in which the source patients were positive for both the anti-HCV antibody and HCV RNA, and the exposed subjects were negative for anti-HCV antibody at the time of the incidents.

Molecular Evidence of Human T‑Cell Leukemia Virus Type 1 Transmission by Needlestick Injury in Healthcare Workers.

Human T‑cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV‑1) is a retrovirus that spreads primarily through cell-to-cell transmission. Occupational transmission of HTLV-1 by needlestick injury is considered exceedingly rare, with no reported molecularly confirmed cases. We report two healthcare workers who experienced accidental needlestick injuries while caring for patients seropositive for HTLV‑1 and subsequently seroconverted. Full‑length HTLV‑1 proviral sequencing revealed complete nucleotide identity between source patients and infected nurses. These strains belonged to the HTLV-1 subtype 1a Japanese subg

Endoneurial pathology of the needlestick-nerve-injury model of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, including rats with and without pain behaviors.

Current rodent models of neuropathic pain produce pain hypersensitivity in almost all lesioned animals and not all identified experimental effects are pain specific. 18G needlestick-nerve-injury (NNI) to one tibial nerve of outbred Sprague-Dawley rats models the phenotype of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), a post-traumatic neuropathic pain syndrome, leaving roughly half of NNI rats with hyperalgesia. We compared endoneurial data from these divergent endophenotypes searching for pathological changes specifically associated with pain-behaviors. Tibial, sural, and common sciatic nerves fro

Accessing Medical Care After a Needlestick Injury: First Responders' Perception of HIV Risk and Attitudes Toward Syringe Service Programs.

First responders have an increased risk of occupational exposure to HIV as the result of a needlestick injury (NSI) because of the chaotic prehospital environment in which they provide care. Approximately 2.3 of every 1000 first responders (0.23%) who are exposed to HIV via a NSI risk seroconversion if left untreated. Participants completed a 28-question online survey examining level of concern about HIV, thoughts about injection drug use, number of accidental NSIs, and medical services received after a needlestick. First, all data were analyzed descriptively. Second, a multiple linear regress
