Necrotizing epiglottitis treated with early surgical debridement: A case report.

OBJECTIVE: Necrotizing supraglottitis is a rare but potentially morbid infection most often seen in immunocompromised patients. All reported cases have utilized intravenous antibiotic therapy as the mainstay of treatment and many have had associated morbidities. METHODS: We describe a case of a 50-year-old previously healthy female who presented with necrotizing epiglottis and was treated with immediate surgical debridement followed by directed antibiotic therapy. RESULTS: Our patient rapidly recovered with no further invasive interventions. On follow up she had no further complications or f

Neisseria sicca: A Rare Cause of Bacterial Conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND Neisseria-associated conjunctivitis is a rare cause of bacterial conjunctivitis in adults, with Neisseria gonorrhoeae as the primarily identified infectious strain. Here, we present a rare case of bacterial conjunctivitis due to Neisseria sicca in a 34-year-old immunocompetent man with no prior medical or ocular history. CASE REPORT A 34-year-old man with no significant past medical or ocular history presented with a 3-day history of left periorbital edema, ocular pain, and copious purulent discharge. Bacterial conjunctivitis was suspected due to the rapidity of onset and purulence.

Acute Cystitis Caused by Commensal Neisseria oralis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Neisseria are usually harmless inhabitants of otherwise asymptomatic persons' upper respiratory mucosal surfaces. METHOD: It is, therefore, expected that a disturbance in the physiology leads to nongonococcal, non-meningococcal Neisseria becoming pathogenic. RESULT: We report the case of a diabetic man who initially presented with nonspecific symptoms and was later found to have cystitis caused by N. oralis. CONCLUSION: We also review the pertinent literature and discuss available evidence on pathophysiological mechanisms of infection with such commensal bacteria.

[Diagnosis and treatment of genitourinary infection with non-gonococcal Neisseria in men].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence of non-gonococcal Neisseria on the diagnosis and treatment of male genitourinary infection. METHODS: The samples of urethral exudates, prostatic secretions or/and semen were collected from 8 cases of male patients with acute urethritis or chronic prostatitis, then inoculated into gonococcal agar medium, blood agar medium, Sabouraud agar medium and Mycoplasma agar medium, respectively. Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasmae, fungi and other bacteria were isolated, Chlamydiae examined by Gemenez staining, and the gram-negative diplococci from the samples identifi

Infective discitis with Neisseria sicca/subflava in a previously healthy adult.

STUDY DESIGN: A case report of Neisseria sicca/subflava discitis in a healthy elderly female. OBJECTIVE: To report a rare case, which is usually seen exclusively in children. SETTING: Stoke on Trent, England. METHOD: Case report, a 65-year-old female with a 6 month history of back and bilateral leg pain. X-rays showed collapse of L4/5 disc. No neurological deficit. Magnetic resonance imaging supported the clinical suspicion of discitis. Percutaneous biopsy followed 2 weeks later by open biopsy with bilateral root decompression was performed. Culture of L4/5 disc tissue produced Neisseria si

An investigation of colonization of the conjunctival sac of sheep by bacteria and mycoplasmas.

The conjunctival sacs of 100 healthy adult ewes and 20 lambs and 76 adult ewes affected by ovine keratoconjunctivitis (OKC) were examined microbiologically. Branhamella ovis was the only organism regularly isolated from healthy ewes and lambs, Mycoplasma conjunctivae was isolated from the conjunctival sac of nine ewes but its occurrence was not associated with clinical signs of ovine keratoconjunctivitis. Mycoplasma conjunctivae and Branhamella ovis were isolated significantly more often from eyes affected by OKC than from unaffected eyes.

The role of Branhamella catarrhalis in the "bloody-nose syndrome" of cynomolgus macaques.

During a 15-month period, 25 cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) at the Johns Hopkins University were observed to have nasal discharge. Fifteen (60%) of these animals had positive nasal cultures for Branhamella catarrhalis. Clinical signs associated with infection by this bacterium were sneezing, epistaxis, and mucohemorrhagic nasal discharge. Treatment with antibiotics resulted in prompt resolution of clinical signs. Post-therapeutic nasal cultures were negative for B. catarrhalis. Two groups of clinically normal, culture-negative, cynomolgus macaques were inoculated with natural isolat

[Necrotizing fasciitis of the head and neck].

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a potentially lethal soft tissue infection characterized by cutaneous necrosis, suppurative fasciitis, vascular thrombosis and extreme systemic toxicity. It is a rare entity in the head and neck region, but occur most frequently in patients with diabetes and chronic alcoholism. Mostly involved are immunodeficient patients with banal infections of the upper aerodigestive tract, small traumas, but also after surgical procedures. Necrotizing fasciitis is an infection caused by aerobic or anaerobic microorganisms. A strong complication is a streptococcus-associated-to

Assessment of the bacterial community of the human upper respiratory tract in patients affected by Covid-19.

Given the challenges posed by the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19), understanding the role of the microbiota is crucial. The analysis of this microbial community in the body not only expands our understanding of health, but also provides insights into the interaction between viruses, microbiota, and the human host. In this study, we aimed to identify possible variations in bacterial diversity caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The study involved 45 volunteers, divided into the Positive Group (PG) consisting of 14 patients and the Negative Group (NG) cons

Kingella Kingae Sequence Type 25 Meningitis in an Immunocompetent Toddler: Clinical and Molecular Approach.

Kingella kingae is a cause of bacteremia, endocarditis, and the leading cause of osteoarticular infections between 6 and 48 months of life. We report on a rare case of K. kingae meningitis in the absence of endocarditis and immune deficiency in a 26-month-old boy emphasizing the distinct genomic determinants of the strain which may be of importance to the pathogenesis of the disease.

Culture-negative infective endocarditis due to Neisseria bacilliformis identified via 16S rRNA gene analysis from resected valve tissue: Case report and review of the literature.

Blood culture-negative infective endocarditis (BCNE) has a poorer prognosis than culture-positive cases. Thus, it is crucial to determine the pathogenic microorganism using molecular diagnostic techniques, in addition to conventional techniques, including cultures of blood and/or resected valve tissue. Herein, we report a case of culture-negative infective endocarditis (IE) caused by Neisseria bacilliformis, as identified by 16S rRNA analysis of valve tissue. N. bacilliformis a non-gonococcal and non-meningococcal Neisseria species that partially comprises the oropharyngeal microbiome, and rep

Kingella kingae sternoclavicular osteoarthritis.

Sternoclavicular arthritis is an unusual osteoarticular infection and can be associated with severe complications. Cases in a paediatric population are infrequently reported, making this approach challenging. Kingella kingae is an agent of increasing recognition in paediatric invasive infections, principally below 2 years of age. A case of K. kingae osteoarthritis in a 17-month-old child is described with a review of the literature.

On King Saul, Two Missing Mules, and Kingella kingae: The Serendipitous Discovery of a Pediatric Pathogen.

For the first 2 decades following Kingella kingae's initial characterization, this fastidious organism was considered an unusual cause of human infection until a study published in 1992 reported that inoculation of synovial fluid aspirates into blood culture vials improved the recovery of the bacterium. The authors of the original publication report herein the history of the discovery and review the progress made in the research of the organism.

[Osteomyelitis: a probable, uncommon etiology agent].

The relation of infectious agents to arthritis is an area of great interest to the rheumatologist. Septic arthritis of bacterial origin accounts for approximately 6.5% of all childhood arthritides. Septic arthritis usually results from haematogenous spread from a focus of infection elsewhere in the body, but also by direct extension of an infection from overlying soft tissues or bone or traumatic invasion of the joint. As a result, if a focus of underlying osteomyelitis breaks throught the metaphysis, it may enter the joint and result in septic arthritis. Systemic signs of illness are fever, s

[An outbreak of keratoconjunctivitis in a dairy farm].

An outbreak of infectious kerato-conjunctivitis is described in a dairy herd during the (winter)stable period. Moraxella was isolated from lacrimation fluid from three animals. The development of the infection was possibly precipitated by a vaccination with modified live IBR virus, adenovirus type 3 and parainfluenza virus type 3. Presumably, climatological-stable conditions play an important role in the clinical manifestation of the infection.
