Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) can lead to devastating neurodevelopmental consequences such as cerebral palsy, seizure disorders, and significant developmental delays. HIE in the newborn is often the result of a hypoxic event, such as uterine rupture, placental abruption, or cord prolapse. Biphasic brain injury occurs in HIE. The first phase involves activation of the sympathetic nervous system as a compensatory mechanism. The second phase, known as reperfusion brain injury, occurs hours later. Induced hypothermia, a neuroprotective strategy for treating HIE, targets the second phase to

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), also called "brittle bone disease," is a rare heterozygous connective tissue disorder that is caused by mutations of genes that affect collagen. Osteogenesis imperfecta is characterized by decreased bone mass, bone fragility, and skin hyperlaxity. The phenotype present is determined according to the mutation on the affected gene as well as the type and location of the mutation. Osteogenesis imperfecta is neither preventable nor treatable. Osteogenesis imperfecta is classified into 11 types to date, on the basis of their clinical symptoms and genetic components. Th

BACKGROUND: Nurses in the neonatal intensive care units face continuous emotional demands as they care for critically ill infants and support distressed families. Repeated exposure to trauma and parental grief can lead to compassion fatigue - a state of emotional exhaustion that reduces the ability to empathize. The purpose of the study was to explore how nurses experience compassion fatigue while working in neonatal intensive care units.
METHODS: Qualitative, exploratory design. Eleven individual interviews with nurses and nurse specialists were conducted in August and September in 2023, at

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to explore the ways in which neonatal nurses understand the experience of parents who have experienced infertility, conceived a baby via in vitro fertilisation and delivered an extremely premature infant. The chance of a poor long-term outcome for the baby is significant; therefore, parental anguish plays out in the neonatal intensive care.
BACKGROUND: Current literature suggests that infertility is a significant issue for ageing women and many couples experience multiple cycles of invitro-fertilisation (IVF) treatment to achieve a pregnancy. Babies conceive

As neonatal intensive care nurses face downsizing and/or cross-training, new opportunities are emerging for advanced practice nurses in follow-up care of neonatal intensive care unit graduates, case management, quality improvement, and community hospital care. This article identifies current issues in neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) education as the model has shifted from hospital-based, certificate programs to graduate degree programs offered by colleges/universities of nursing. Opportunities for increasing NNP role flexibility and recommendations for bridging the transition to a 21st centu

Respiratory distress remains a major source of morbidity and mortality among infants, despite advances in conventional mechanical ventilation over the past 20 years. High-frequency jet ventilation provides an alternative treatment modality for neonates suffering from pulmonary air leak syndromes, such as pulmonary interstitial emphysema and pneumothorax. This new technology presents special challenges to the nurse caring for these critically ill neonates and their families.

Neonatal seizures are high-risk clinical events that require rapid recognition but present subtle symptoms. Although simulation-based education supports clinical competence, the use of escape-room-based approaches in neonatal nursing education remains underexplored. The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of nursing students regarding escape room-based simulation for managing neonatal seizure scenarios. This descriptive qualitative study involved 8 undergraduate nursing students engaged in a 5-stage escape-room simulation using a high-fidelity neonatal simulator (Super Tory S2220,

BACKGROUND: Neonatal hypoglycemia (NH) is a common clinical symptom that can occur in both normal and critically ill neonates. The placenta is the site of material exchange between the mother and the fetus, a special organ shared by the mother and the fetus during pregnancy, and one of its important functions is to transfer nutrients from the mother to the fetus. Terbutaline is used to relax frequent uterine contractions before delivery, and it can penetrate the placental barrier and affect the normal decomposition of neonatal glycogen. The situation is neonatal hypoglycemia if not timely dete

BACKGROUND: Intensive care units (ICUs) are high-technology environments where patient safety is monitored through various devices. However, the high frequency of alarms can lead to alarm fatigue, especially in neonatal and paediatric ICUs due to rapid physiological fluctuations. This condition may decrease nurses' attention and lead to missed nursing care.
AIMS: The primary aim of this study was to determine the levels of alarm fatigue and missed nursing care, along with the underlying reasons for missed care, among neonatal and paediatric intensive care nurses. The secondary aim was to exam
