Subperiosteal Aneurysmal Bone Cyst with Florid Ossification: A Rare Subtype.

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a well-characterized benign cystic lesion of the bone with common localization to the medulla of the long bones. Rarely, ABCs may arise within the subperiosteal region, which can be diagnostically challenging for both the radiologist and pathologist due to their aggressive radiologic appearance thus mimicking other malignant neoplasms. Herein, we present a rare case of subperiosteal ABC with prominent soft tissue involvement and florid reactive periosteal ossification and provide a short literature review on subperiosteal ABCs.

Second primary neoplasms in 633,964 cancer patients in Sweden, 1958-1996.

The Swedish Family-Cancer Database was used to analyze concordant (same site) and discordant (different site) second primary neoplasms in 633,964 cancer patients diagnosed from 1958 to 1996. Cases of second malignant neoplasms were extracted from the Database if the diagnosis date of the first and second cancer differed by at least 1 month. The expected numbers of cancers were obtained by applying site-, sex-, age-, period-, residence- and socioeconomic level-specific rates in the corresponding population in the Database to the appropriate person-years at risk. The standardized incidence ratio

Metastasizing dysgerminoma in an inland bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps).

BACKGROUND: Malignant dysgerminomas are infrequently reported ovarian neoplasms in animals, especially in exotic pets (non-traditional companion animals [NTCAs]). In the few published case reports on reptilian species, examples are primarily postmortem without antemortem (clinical) assessment. PATIENT PRESENTATION: An adult, 13-year-old, spayed female inland bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) presented with lethargy, a right-sided head tilt, unilateral exophthalmos and ventrotemporal strabismus on the right eye. On examination, a palpable mass (approximately 3.5 cm in diameter) was detected wi

Leukaemic Ascites and Peritoneal Myeloid Sarcoma: Rare but Not Impossible.

UNLABELLED: A myeloid sarcoma is an extramedullary tumour arising from infiltration by leukemic cells at an anatomic site other than the bone marrow. Most commonly it precedes acute myeloid leukaemia but occasionally occurs simultaneously. It may also be associated with myeloproliferative neoplasms, myelodysplastic syndrome and the blast phase of chronic myeloid leukaemia. The most common sites for extramedullary tumours are bone, periosteum, soft tissue, lymph node and skin. Although this disease can affect a wide range of body sites, there are very few reports of peritoneal myeloid sarcoma o

Postoperative Complication and Reoperation Rates Following Resection of Soft Tissue vs. Bone Malignancies Based on Anatomic Location in the Inpatient Setting.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical excisions of upper and lower extremity malignancies are increasing annually, due in part to the rising incidence of sarcomas. The purpose of this study is to compare readmissions, reoperation rate, and complications following surgical excision of soft/connective tissue vs bone malignancies of the upper and lower extremities. METHODS: The Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD) was queried from 2016-2017 to conduct a retrospective analysis of 16,435 patients diagnosed with malignant neoplasms of the long bone (ULLB, n = 1,433) and soft tissue (ULST, n = 2,049) of the uppe

Sphenoid sinus localization of multiple myeloma revealing evolution from benign gammopathy.

BACKGROUND: Plasma-cell neoplasms of the head and neck include extramedullary plasmacytoma and solitary plasmocytoma of bone or may represent a local manifestation of multiple myeloma. Involvement of sphenoid sinus has been rarely reported in multiple myeloma. METHODS: We present the case of a 77-year-old man with a 3-year-history of benign monoclonal IgG-lambda gammopathy who developed left sixth-nerve palsy and malaise. RESULTS: Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging scan disclosed a large soft-tissue mass of the sphenoid sinus with bone destruction. Sphenoid sinus biopsy

Primary giant cell tumor of soft tissue of the groin - a case of 46 years duration.

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue giant cell tumor (GCT-ST) of low malignant potential is an uncommon neoplasm, considered the soft tissue counterpart of giant cell tumor of bone. GCT-ST mainly affects young to middle-age adults and presents as a painless growing mass mainly located in the lower extremities and trunk. Histologically, this tumor is characterized by a mixture of uniformly scattered osteoclast-like multinucleated giant cells intimately admixed with short fascicles of spindled cells. Complete excision with negative surgical margins is associated with a benign clinical course in most cases.

Plasma cell neoplasms. Review of disease progression and report of a new variant.

Plasma cell neoplasms are generally categorized into four groups; multiple myeloma (MM), solitary plasmacytoma of the bone (SPB), plasma cell leukemias, and extramedullary plasmacytomas (EMP). A plasmacytoma is defined as any discrete, usually solitary mass of neoplastic plasma cells, either in the bone marrow or in various soft tissue sites. Each manifestation of a plasma cell neoplasm differs in terms of tumor recurrence and progression to MM. A gastric plasmacytoma (GP) is a rare presentation of extramedullary plasmacytoma and has not been previously reported as a site of recurrence for a S

Osteoma of the tongue.

Osteomas are benign bony neoplasms commonly found in long bones and in the skull and facial bones. Osseous growths within soft tissue structures of the head and neck are rare. Review of the English literature reveals only 31 cases of osteomas within the soft tissues of the tongue and 2 in the buccal mucosa. We report on a patient with a bony hard asymptomatic mass at the base of the tongue, which was found to be an osteoma by biopsy. Complete removal was declined by the patient. There was no progression during a six-month period of follow-up.

Gardner syndrome: presurgical planning and surgical management of craniomaxillofacial osteomas.

Gardner syndrome, a variant of familial adenomatous polyposis, is an autosomal dominant genetic disease characterized by the combined presence of multiple intestinal polyps and extraintestinal manifestations. The extraintestinal manifestations include multiple osteomas, connective tissue tumors, thyroid carcinomas, and hypertrophy of the pigmented epithelium of the retina. Osteoma is a benign neoplasm of bone tissue characterized by slow continuous growth that usually affects the long bones and cranial bones and is a major symptom for Gardner syndrome. The authors report the extraintestinal le

[Mastocytosis and eosinophilic leukemia: diagnostics and classification].

Mastocytosis and myeloid eosinophilic neoplasms are rare diseases of the bone marrow and are often a diagnostic challenge for hematopathologists. In mastocytosis, compact mast cell infiltrates represent the main diagnostic criterion and for myeloid eosinophilic neoplasms, eosinophilic granulocytes dominate the histological picture. Both disease groups include phenotypically and prognostically very different entities which are each defined by WHO criteria. For systemic mastocytosis (SM), a differentiation between indolent and aggressive or even leukemic forms is of prognostic importance. In ind

Immunocytochemical analysis of MNDA in tissue sections and sorted normal bone marrow cells documents expression only in maturing normal and neoplastic myelomonocytic cells and a subset of normal and neoplastic B lymphocytes.

The human myeloid cell nuclear differentiation antigen (MNDA) is a nuclear antigen known to be expressed in mature myelomonocytic cell lines. An extensive immunocytochemical evaluation of fixed tissues confirmed MNDA expression in normal maturing granulocytes and monocytes and in acute nonlymphocytic leukemias and chronic myelogenous leukemia. MNDA was not detected in normal tissue histiocytes but was found in activated macrophages and foreign body giant cells associated with inflammation. Flow cytometric cell sorting of normal bone marrow established that MNDA is initially expressed in myeloi

Tumours of the foot: A 10 years retrospective analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The foot is a complex structure composed of several tissues, each of which can be the origin of the proliferation and development of the tumour. Most lesions about the foot are reactive or inflammatory, but some are true neoplasms. METHOD: This is a retrospective analysis of 4997 patient records treated in the Orthopaedic Oncology Unit of University Malaya Medical Centre, Malaysia, between 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2020. Demographic data of 195 patients with foot tumours were analysed out of 4997 neoplasm patients. RESULTS: There were 195 cases of foot tumours: 148 were ben

Soft tissue aneurysmal bone cyst presenting as an enlarging neck mass: Case report and review of the head and neck literature.

Soft tissue aneurysmal bone cysts (STABCs) are rare neoplasms histopathologically identical to aneurysmal bone cysts. These benign lesions are characterized by thin, peripheral ossification and no skeletal continuity. STABC may be difficult to distinguish from myositis ossificans (MO) and malignant entities from imaging and fine needle aspiration, due to rarity and overlapping features. We present a case of a STABC occurring in the paraspinal cervical muscles. The imaging, histopathology, molecular analysis, and treatment are discussed. Four other published cases of STABC of the head and neck

Trigger Finger Caused by Extraskeletal Chondroma.

Chondroma is a relatively rare, but well-reported benign neoplasm. This lesion normally occurs attached to bone; however, they may be rarely found without association to bone and embedded in soft tissue. The authors describe the case of a 76-year-old man in whom flexor tendon triggering was associated with an extraskeletal chondroma between the annular ligament and the flexor tendon.
