This review summarizes vascular tumours of skin and soft tissues that have been characterised in recent years. Although most of them are very rare, knowledge about their reproducible clinicopathological features is important to avoid diagnostic pitfalls. These lesions include: bacillary angiomatosis, a vasoproliferative, pseudoneoplastic infection of immunocompromised patients caused by Rochalimaea henselae; tufted angioma, a variant of lobular capillary haemangioma characterised by a "cannon-ball" distribution of multiple lobules composed of packed capillaries and pericytes; microvenular haem

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (EMC) is a rare malignant soft tissue tumor of unpredictable clinical behavior. The morphological spectrum of EMC based on histology alone can be difficult. There is no precise immunohistochemical (IHC) profile that together with the clinical parameters is able to predict the clinical outcome. We studied 31 cases confirmed as EMC. Clinical and follow-up data were recorded. Histopathological, molecular, and IHC studies were performed. Association among histopathological parameters was assessed using a chi-square test to determine homogeneity or linear trend f

Ewing sarcoma (E.S.) is a rare malignant tumour of the bone, dubious in origin and uncertain in the direction of its differentiation [2,3,7,10]. Recent reports have presented description of primary neoplasms of soft tissues which revealed no differences from E.S. in light and electron-microscopy but had no connection with the skeleton [1,4,5,6,8,9]. These lesions, found in subcutaneous tissue of the trunk and limbs, in the retroperitoneum and in paravertebral regions were called extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma (E.E.S.) or soft tissue Ewing sarcoma. As tumours of this type are infrequent and may ca

Computed tomography (CT) is an important imaging modality for diagnosis and follow-up of neoplastic or nonneoplastic conditions of the serosal membrane. The characteristic CT findings of malignant pleural mesothelioma include unilateral pleural effusion, thickening of the mediastinal pleura, and circumferential and nodular pleural thickening of greater than 1 cm. Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma manifests as a large mass or diffuse peritoneal thickening without a definable mass and is difficult to differentiate from peritoneal carcinomatosis or tuberculosis. The imaging features of primary se

Pleomorphic hyalinizing angiectatic tumor (PHAT) is a very rare entity of soft tissue considered a "neoplasm of uncertain behaviour of connective or other soft tissue" by the World Health Organization (2020). It develops in subcutaneous tissue of the lower extremities, more frequently in the region of the ankle and foot, and rarely as a deep-seated soft tissue mass in locations such as the perineum, buttock, arms, head and neck, and viscera. Although inconsistent cytogenetic data have been reported on PHAT so far, there are potential morphological and genetic overlaps with hemosiderotic fibrol

A benign mesenchymoma is an unencapsulated soft tissue neoplasm composed of 2 or more mature mesenchymal tissues not normally associated with each other, excluding fibrous connective tissue. No single mesenchymal tissue should predominate with respect to the other mesenchymal elements. Ten well-documented examples of intraoral benign mesenchymoma have been reported in the English language literature. The purpose of this report is to document 10 additional cases and to review the clinicopathologic characteristics of this uncommon tumor.

OBJECTIVE: There are a number of nonsurgical modalities used by athletes in attempts to improve performance or prevent, treat, and rehabilitate musculoskeletal injuries. A concise review of available evidence on common nonsurgical modalities used today is necessary so that practitioners may appropriately counsel patients.
METHODS: A comprehensive review of relevant publications regarding Kinesio taping, sports massage therapy, and acupuncture from 2006 through 2019 was completed using PubMed and Google Scholar.
RESULTS: There have been numerous investigations evaluating the efficacy of nonsu

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumors are rare soft tissue tumors of submesothelial origin and variable malignant potential. The most common localization is pleural, whereas only 0.6% are of extrapleural localization. Solitary fibrous tumor of the peritoneum, especially of gastric serosa is an extremely rare form of this tumor.
CASE REPORT: We presented a 65-year-old female patient with solitary fibrous tumor of the stomach. Histopathological analysis of removed tissue showed the presence of tumor tissue built of spindle cells, elongated nuclei with moderately abundant cytoplasm. Cells were i

BACKGROUND: Soft-Tissue Sarcoma (STS) is a heterogeneous group of neoplasms of mesenchymal origin, occurring in connective tissues. According to previously conducted studies, STS accounts for approximately 1% and 7-%15% of adult and pediatric malignancies, respectively. Almost 50%-60% of sarcomas arise from extremities and usually present as a large painless or rarely painful soft-tissue mass. The present study aimed to describe the epidemiology of soft-tissue sarcomas, especially in the Iranian population.
METHODS: This epidemiological study of limb soft-tissue sarcoma was conducted based on

Recurrent gene fusions (GFs) in translocated sarcomas are recognized as major oncogenic drivers of the disease, as well as diagnostic markers whose identification is necessary for differential diagnosis. EWSR1 is a 'promiscuous' gene that can fuse with many different partner genes, defining different entities among a broad range of mesenchymal neoplasms. Molecular testing of EWSR1 translocation traditionally relies on FISH assays with break-apart probes, which are unable to identify the fusion partner. Therefore, other ancillary molecular diagnostic modalities are being increasingly adopted fo

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is a rare neoplasm that causes tumor-induced osteomalasia (TIO) in most affected patients, usually through the production of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). This tumor is often misdiagnosed due to its relative rarity and its widely varied histomorphologic spectrum. Here we describe a case of a 78-year-old woman who presented with a left middle tumor without symptoms of TIO. The histological features resembled chondromyxoid fibroma with smudgy calcification in the tumor matrix. In addition, we evaluated FGF23 expression through immunohistochemical study

Myxofibrosarcoma is a common connective tissue neoplasm of malignant fibrocytes in a myxoid matrix favoring the extremities. Like many other tumors of connective tissue, soft tissue sarcoma exhibits high recurrence rates but is rarely known to metastasize. We present a patient with myxofibrosarcoma of the hand with metastases to the lungs, pleura, and mediastinum. The mediastinal metastasis presented clinically with gastrointestinal symptoms due to compression of the gastroesophageal junction. To our knowledge, this is the first report of metastatic myxofibrosarcoma of the hand and also the fi

BACKGROUND Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is an extremely rare mesenchymal neoplasm that is commonly seen in bone and soft tissue. It is associated with a paraneoplastic syndrome, oncogenic osteomalacia, due to tumor-induced urinary phosphate wasting. It is demonstrated to be predominantly mediated by fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23)/fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1) axis. Clinically, PMT usually presents as a solitary lesion in the bone. The diagnosis of PMT is challenging due to its non-specific clinical manifestation, radiologic findings, and morphological features. INTRODUCTION: Surgical excisions of upper and lower extremity malignancies are increasing annually, due in part to the rising incidence of sarcomas. The purpose of this study is to compare readmissions, reoperation rate, and complications following surgical excision of soft/connective tissue vs bone malignancies of the upper and lower extremities.
METHODS: The Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD) was queried from 2016-2017 to conduct a retrospective analysis of 16,435 patients diagnosed with malignant neoplasms of the long bone (ULLB, n = 1,433) and soft tissue (ULST, n = 2,049) of the uppe

The diagnosis and classification of soft tissue sarcomas can pose difficult problems for the histopathologist. Many sarcomas are too poorly differentiated to exhibit morphological features specific enough to define their histogenesis. Using the immunoperoxidase technique with commercially available antisera as a routine adjunct to other diagnostic aids, it is possible to arrive at more accurate diagnoses on which treatment protocols can be based. In addition a better understanding of mesenchymal neoplasms and their origins can be obtained by functional immunohistochemical studies.

BACKGROUND: Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a unique and distinct clinicopathological entity in terms of its origin, morphology, and biologic behavior. Despite being a slow-growing tumor, it has a high rate of local recurrences and history of metastases to uncommon sites like the mandible, liver, retroperitoneum, right ventricle, pancreas, and central nervous system. Here, we report a very unique case of extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma that metastasized to the breast, which itself is a very rare site for metastases.

Chondrosarcomas are common tumors of the canine appendicular and axial skeleton; however, extraskeletal chondrosarcomas are very rare. Herein we report a case of extraskeletal chondrosarcoma in the tongue of a dog. Histologically, glossal skeletal muscle was infiltrated and effaced by islands of cartilage and streams of spindle-shaped cells. Retrospective analysis of 236 tongue masses submitted to the Iowa State University surgical biopsy service between 2011 and 2019 showed that the majority of submitted tongue masses are either non-neoplastic or benign, with granular cell tumors identified a

RATIONALE: Cardiac inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare primary cardiac tumor which is currently considered as a low-grade neoplasm. The tumor has a predilection in infants and adolescents and primarily occurs as an endocardial-based cavitary mass. However, cardiac IMT that only involves the interventricular septum in middle-aged adults is extremely rarely reported. Considering its infrequency, we report a rare clinical case, with the aim of sharing our experience during the diagnostic procedures.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a rare tumor of a borderline malignancy. Although it is commonly seen in children, the number of childhood cases in the current literature is limited. The lung is the most commonly affected location. However, cases that have been documented in the mesentery-omentum have mostly been located in the mesentery of the small bowel and not in the antimesenteric edge as in our patient.
