Local recurrence of the atypical fibrous histiocytoma - a case report.

UNLABELLED: Atypical fibrous histiocytoma (AFH) is an uncommon variant of benign skin neoplasm, fibrous histiocytoma. Despite having pseudosarcomatous histological features, atypical fibrous histiocytoma is characterized by a benign clinical course. AIM: The aim of the study was to present the case of local recurrence of atypical fibrous histiocytoma in scar after the primary excision. A CASE REPORT: A 28-year-old woman was admitted due to a slowgrowing 10 mm skin tumor of the left elbow, which has been observed for 18 months. Physical examination revealed that the tumor was covered by norma

Cartilaginous choristoma of the tongue with an immunohistochemical study.

By definition, choristomas are normal tissues found in anomalous topography. The cartilaginous features of these lesions are rare in the soft tissues of the oral cavity. The majority of cartilaginous choristomas of the tongue--the primary site of emergence of the oropharynx--are associated with adipose, fibrous or bone tissues--apart from that, only a few of these were confirmed by an immunohistochemical study. The neoplasm exclusively composed of chondromatous tissue is extremely rare in the tongue. This paper reports the clinical, surgical and pathological characteristics of a cartilaginous

Lungs and subcutaneous metastases from a solitary fibrous tumour of the pancreas.

Solitary fibrous tumour is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm previously thought to only originate from the pleura; it is seen only rarely in an extra-pleural location. We report the first case of pancreatic solitary fibrous tumour in an 87-year-old woman that has metastasized to the lungs and subcutaneous tissue. We have identified a solitary mass excised from the groin region, which is positive for CD34 and vimentic marker with high proliferative rate, nuclear atypia and cellular necrosis. Imaging studies confirmed a slow-growing solitary mass in the uncinate lobe of the pancreas with evidence

[Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura].

Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura are rare tumors originating from the mesenchymal cells of the submesothelial tissue of the pleura. In half of the cases, the neoplasm presents as an asymptomatic mass, often with quite large dimensions. It is a benign tumor in 80% of the cases and even when considered malignant has a good prognosis if totally removed. We present the case of a 78-year-old female, who was evaluated for lower respiratory infection, in whom the diagnosis of Giant Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Pleura was made. She was submitted to surgical en bloc resection and is asymptomatic

Proliferative, reparative, and reactive benign bone lesions that may be confused diagnostically with true osseous neoplasms.

Diagnostic problems attending intraosseous and parosteal pseudoneoplastic lesions can be radiographic, or histological, or both. Proliferations in this category may contain cellular fibro-osseous or chondro-osseous tissues that are difficult to separate microscopically from those seen in various true neoplasms of the bones. This review considers the clinicopathologic features of fibrous dysplasia, benign fibro-osseous lesions of the jawbones, osteofibrous dysplasia, metaphyseal fibrous defect, giant-cell reparative granuloma, "brown tumor" of hyperparathyroidism, synovial chondrometaplasia, an

Chondrosarcoma arising in monostotic fibrous dysplasia treated with total femur resection and megaprothesis: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Fibrous dysplasia is tumor like lesions of bone which develop as substitution of bone by an expansion of fibrous connective tissue mixed with hard trabeculae. Chondrosarcomas is one of common malignant primary bone tumor derived from heterogenous group of neoplasm producing chondroid matrix. Chondrosarcoma arising in fibrous dysplasia, especially in monostotic fibrous dysplasia is a very rare case. CASE REPORT: A 54-year-old male presented with chief complaint of pain on left thigh. Patient with history of pathological fracture on left femoral diaphysis 3 years ago due to fibrou

Primary left atrial tumor showing mitral valve stenosis and left upper lobe pulmonary edema: report of a case.

Myxoma and other neoplasms in the left atrium often show signs and symptoms similar to those of mitral valve stenosis. Malignant fibrous histiocytoma, one of the most common sarcomas, occurs in the deep soft tissue of the limbs and retroperitoneum in adults. With the exception of primary lung cancer, however, sarcomatous intravascular extension in the lung and infiltration into the left atrium are rare. We report a case of overt left upper lobe pulmonary edema observed on chest radiograms and a mass occupying much of the left atrium and exhibiting hemodynamics similar to those of mitral valve

Ossifying fibromyxoid tumour: a rare soft tissue tumour of intermediate malignancy.

Ossifying fibromyxoid tumours (OFTs) are uncommon soft tissue tumours. A 73-year-old male presented with a painless exophytic mass located in the left scapular area which was identified 1 year earlier. An incisional biopsy was performed and microscopic features were compatible with OFT. Radiologic evaluation revealed multiple pulmonary metastasis. Although many cases persue an indolent biologic behaviour, local recurrence and metastasis have been reported and long-term follow-up should be considered.

Single port VATS resection of a sessile solitary fibrous tumour of the visceral pleura. A case report.

UNLABELLED: The solitary fibrous tumour of the visceral pleura is a rare neoplasm that derives from mesenchymal cells adjacent to the mesothelial tissue of pleura. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice in benign lesions and healing resulting in half of malignant. Local recurrence can occur in malignant cases, but it is very rare in solitary benign tumors. It may be a result of an incomplete or conservative surgery, lack of identification of a tumor during the operation or a growth of a synchronous neoplasm independent from that removed. Surgical resection is also burdened with some dif

Intrapericardial solitary fibrous tumor: A case report and review of literature.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a mesenchymal neoplasm mostly originates from pleura, but rarely from other parts of the body including pericardium. We report a case of a 44-year-old woman with dyspnea and intermittent edema in whom a large intrapericardial mass was discovered by echocardiography. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a focal pericardial calcification in right AV grove with pressure on right ventricle and right atrial, with no connection to cardiac chambers. Histopathological findings after complete resection of the mass revealed fibroconnective tissue with heavy calcification and

A solitary fibrous tumor of the parotid gland: Case report.

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumor is a rare neoplasm that can affect any part of the body, also head and neck region. Etiology is unknown. The incidence is slightly higher in males, the age ranges from 11 to 79 years. PRESENTATION OF CASE: It's the first case in our country of left parotid solitary fibrous tumor, removed by partial parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation. Histology examination showed diffuse spindle-shaped cells proliferation, moderate polymorphism, low mitotic index (<4 mitoses per 10 HPF), partially bordered by fibrous capsule. Immunohistochemistry showed STAT6, CD3

Osteochondrolipoma: a subcutaneous lipoma with chondroid and bone differentiation of the chest wall.

Lipomas are the most common subtype of benign soft tissue neoplasms and can occur anywhere in the body. Differentiation into a diversity of mesenchymal elements, such as blood vessels, fibrous tissue or muscle, is a frequent event. However, the presence of bone or cartilage in these tumors is extraordinarily rare with very few cases reported in the head and neck area. We report a case of an 'osteochondrolipoma' of the chest wall, in a young individual, providing a rationale in support of this as a possible and distinctive histologic subtype of lipomas, as well as discussion in the differential

Etiology of fibrous dysplasia and McCune-Albright syndrome.

In this paper, the etiology of monostotic fibrous dysplasia and McCune-Albright syndrome is explained. Both monostotic fibrous dysplasia and McCune-Albright syndrome are sporadically occurring disorders in which a mutation in the GNAS1 gene occurs postzygotically in a somatic cell. All cells descended from the mutated cell can manifest features of McCune-Albright syndrome or fibrous dysplasia. Cells descended from non-mutated cells develop into normal tissues. Thus, the clinical pattern is variable in distribution and appearance. More generalized vs more localized expression depend on (a) how

Expression of Ia and monocyte-macrophage lineage antigens in giant cell tumor of bone and related lesions.

An immunohistochemical study of six giant cell tumors of bone and eight related lesions (aneurysmal bone cyst, fibrous histiocytoma, and giant cell tumor of tendon sheath) was performed using a panel of monoclonal antibodies directed to the Ia and monocyte-macrophage lineage antigens. In all types of lesion, osteoclastlike multinucleate giant cells were negative for both types of antigen, but a proportion of mononuclear cells gave positive reactions. While the possibility that these cells are reactive cannot be excluded, in giant cell tumor and malignant fibrous histiocytoma, their frequency a

Ossifying Fibroma in the Maxilla and Mandible: A Case Report With a Brief Literature Review.

Fibro-osseous lesions in the jaw bones include fibrous dysplasia, ossifying fibroma (OF), cemento-ossifying fibroma, florid osseous dysplasia, and focal osseous dysplasia. OF is the most common fibro-osseous tumor that presents as a slow-growing well-encapsulated benign neoplasm composed of varying amounts of bone or cement-like tissue in a fibrous stroma well-demarcated from the adjacent normal bone. OF is most common in the jaw bones, with a predilection for the mandible. OF usually occur as solitary lesions and rarely as multiple lesions in a patient. We present clinical and radiologic feat

A mixed mesenchymal sarcoma in the soft palate of a dog: light and electron microscopic findings.

Soft tissue tumors containing a mixture of neoplastic fibrous tissue, cartilage, and bone have previously been classified as extraskeletal osteosarcomas in the dog. These tumors are often poorly differentiated, contain multiple neoplastic cell types, and might be more appropriately called mixed mesenchymal sarcomas. The present neoplasm caused clinical signs of stridorous respiration and dysphagia in a four and one-half year old dog. Four neoplastic cell types were demonstrated by light and electron microscopy.

[Solitary fibrous tumor of the tunica vaginalis testis].

OBJECTIVES: We report one case of solitary fibrous tumor of the tunica vaginalis, a benign paratesticular lesion. METHODS: Surgical exploration with intraoperative biopsy and excision of the lesion was undertaken, leaving the testicle and epididymis undamaged. RESULTS: Intraoperative biopsy revealed the presence of fibrous tissue without malignant cellularity. Pathological diagnosis on the surgical specimen was solitary fibrous tumor of the tunica vaginalis. The patient remains asymptomatic and disease-free one year after treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Almost all testicular masses are malignant, b
