The purpose of this article is to review the imaging findings of the different expansile lesions of the thymus. Almost 50% of all mediastinal masses are located in the anterior mediastinum. The thymus is the most common site of origin of these masses. Several kinds of lesions can arise from this gland because it derives from the three embryonic germ cell layers. Primary neoplasms of the thymus are thymoma, thymolipomas, carcinoma, carcinoid, primary germ cell tumors, and lymphoma. The latter can also involve the organ in a secondary fashion. Other lesions that cause thymic enlargement and that

BACKGROUND: Germline studies in testicular cancer have focused on unselected populations but so far have not led to recommendations for testicular cancer screening.
OBJECTIVE: Herein, we hypothesized that men with testicular cancer and an additional risk factor for hereditary cancer predisposition carry a higher rate of pathogenic variants than men with testicular cancer without another risk factor.
METHODS AND RESULTS: 187 patients with a personal history of testicular cancer underwent germline testing via Invitae. Patients were divided into low-risk and high-risk patients. Low-risk patient

BACKGROUND: Testicular germ-cell carcinoma is the most frequent neoplasm in males aged 15 to 35 years old. It is bilateral in 2% to 3%, and synchronous in 20% to 25% of the cases.
CLINICAL CASE: The case is presented of a 19 year-old male, with abdominal pain. Physical examination revealed abdominal mass in the umbilical region, and the computed tomography scan showed a retroperitoneal tumour, with α-fetoprotein, lactate dehydrogenase, and human chorionic gonadotropin above limits. Testicular ultrasound showed bilateral lesions. Exploratory laparotomy was performed, identifying an unresectabl

UNLABELLED: Teratomas are neoplasms that arise from pluripotent cells and can differentiate along one or more embryonic germ lines. Renal teratoma is an exceedingly rare condition. Teratomas commonly arise in the gonads, sacrococcygeal region, pineal gland, and retroperitoneum. They present mainly as an abdominal mass with few other symptoms. Majority of the tumors are benign, situated on the left side and para renal, occasional lesions are bilateral. If diagnosed early, they are amenable to curative excision.Renal teratomas are rare and most have been dismissed as cases of teratoid nephroblas

Teratomas are neoplasms derived from the germ cell with components of all the three embryonic layers. These are rare neoplasms in head and neck region which can occur in any age group but are more prevalent in children. The present case is an 11-year-old girl who was brought with history of painless and progressive swelling in the oropharynx for 3 years with the associated left sided nasal blockage and nasal discharge. CT scan was suggestive of benign nasopharyngeal mass highly suspicious for lipoma. Excision of the mass was done under general anaesthesia. Peroperatively, it was a smooth, pedu

Somatic-type malignancies (STMs) arising in germ cell tumors are relatively rare, affecting 3% to 8% of patients. These neoplasms show aggressive clinical behavior and are frequently resistant to systemic therapy. In the current review, we provide a comprehensive clinicopathologic overview of these tumors, emphasizing new molecular findings that have improved our understanding of their pathogenesis. In all areas, we highlight special considerations related to the different histologic subtypes. We conclude with a brief mention of areas of uncertainty and areas that require further study.

Testicular germ cell tumours (GCT) are divided into three different subtypes (types I-III) regarding to their developmental origin, histological differences and molecular features. Type I GCT develop from disturbed primordial germ cells and most commonly occur in children and young adolescents, which is why they are referred to as prepubertal GCT. Type II GCT develop from a non-invasive germ cell neoplasia in situ (GCNIS) and show an isochromosome 12p (i12p) or gain of 12p material as a common and characteristic molecular alteration. Type III GCT originate from distorted postpubertal germ cell

Testicular germ cell tumors represent the most common solid malignancy of young men aged 15-40 years. Histopathologically, testicular germ cell tumors are divided into two major groups: pure seminoma and nonseminoma. The pathogenesis of testicular germ cell tumors remains unknown; however, cryptorchidism is the main risk factor, and molecular studies have shown strong evidence of an association between genetic alterations and testicular germ cell tumors. In cases of suspicion for testicular germ cell tumor, a surgical exploration with orchiectomy is obligatory. After completion of diagnostic p

Germ-cell tumours of male ussually arise from the testis. However, in 2-5% of the cases, they also occur outside of the testis as a primary site without evidence of testicular primary tumour. This infrequent entity often appears in the body midline, predominantly in mediastinum and retroperitoneum. Mediastinal germ-cell tumours (MGCT) shall be included in the differential diagnosis of any mediastinic tumour of unknown origin. An accurate diagnosis is essential, due to the fact that these tumours are curable with chemotherapy. The histopathologic and clinical features, and its differences with

Human germ cell tumors (GCTs) are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms. They can occur in different anatomic locations, predominantly in the gonads (both ovary and testis) and in the midline of the body, including the retroperitoneal, mediastinal and hypothalamus/pineal gland regions. This distribution has been related to the migration routefollowed by primordial germ cells from the yolk sac to the genital ridge. The clinical behavior of these tumors depends on the sex of the patient, the age at clinical presentation and the histology of the tumor, Within the testis, three groups of GCTs can be

The development of metastases from germ cell tumours of the testis is studied in terms of its histopathological, ontogenetic, anatomical and evolutive aspects. The treatment of non-seminomatous germ cell tumours and pure seminomas is analysed separately. The prognostic factors defined by the risk of failure of treatment are described and the medical and surgical strategies or combinations of both modalities are proposed for each stage of these cancers. The major points and novelties include: the usual histological polymorphism of these tumours. The markers include alpha-foetoprotein and HCG. C

Mediastinal germ cell tumors (MGCTs) are the most common extragonadal germ cell tumors (GCTs) and most often arise in the anterior mediastinum with a male predilection. MGCTs also have a predilection for patients with Klinefelter syndrome and possibly other genetic conditions. MGCTs, as GCTs at other extragonadal sites, are thought to arise from germ cells improperly retained during migration along the midline during embryogenesis. Similar to their counterparts in the testes, MGCTs are classified into seminomatous and nonseminomatous GCTs. Seminomatous MGCT represents pure seminoma, whereas no

At least 90% of testicular tumors belong to the group of germ cell tumors (GCTs), which are classified according to the 2004 World Health Organization (WHO) classification. Race is one of the most important etiologic factors in the development of GCTs. White men living in Western industrialized countries show the highest rates of incidence. Known risk factors are cryptorchidism, contralateral GCT, familial association, infertility, testicular atrophy, trauma, surgery, socioeconomic status, environmental factors, and occupational exposure to noxious conditions. For the most part, the morphology

Germ cell tumors (GCTs) are the most common tumors of the testis and arise from germinal epithelium cells in the seminiferous tubules. All GCTs show malignant behavior and frequently metastasize. The diagnosis of GCTs depends on the clinical manifestations, laboratory parameters, preoperative imaging features, and tissue biomarkers. Ultrasonography and Doppler ultrasonography are the primary imaging modalities used to evaluate testicular masses. Sonoelastography is a diagnostic tool that can measure the stiffness of tissue and may differentiate between benign and malignant tumors of testis. Ma

A seven-year-old female cynomolgus monkey had a mass in the left ovary with metastasis to the lung and the right ovary. The mass of these organs showed three different characteristics, and its immunohistochemical profiles were consistent with embryonal carcinoma (EC), choriocarcinoma (CC), and epithelioid trophoblastic tumor (ETT). The EC was characterized with sheets and glandlike structures with large pleomorphic, single-nucleated epithelial cells that were immunohistochemically positive for α-fetoprotein, octamer-4, and CD30, and with multinucleated giant cells resembling syncytiotrophoblas

In the present era, infertility is one of the major issues which restricts many couples to have their own children. Infertility is the inability to achieve a clinical pregnancy after regular unprotected sexual intercourse for the period of one year or more. Various factors including defective male or female germ cell development, unhealthy and improper lifestyles, diseases like cancer and associated chemo-or-radiation therapies, congenital disorders, etc., may be responsible for infertility. Therefore, it is highly important to understand the basic concepts of germ cell development including p

Intratubular germ cell neoplasia of unclassified type (IGCNU) is the precursor lesion of adult testicular germ cell invasive tumors. Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are recognized as the cells of origin of testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs) because of the genetic and phenotypic characteristics analyzed. The most important risk factors responsible for abnormal development of PGCs are environmental, including the testicular dysgenetic syndromes that generate a better microenvironmentfor survival of IGCNU cells, an abnormal relationship with Sertoli cells, and an abnormal hormonal exposure at the t
